Title: Who are ya .. Who are Ya ? (New members introduce yourself here)
Post by: gazwarrington on January 18, 2011, 11:59:23 AM
After the 'no intro' thread I thought I'd start this thread for 'newbies' to introduce themselves on the forum...

Of course some people don't like using their real names and that's not what this about, more about why you support Alty, how long you have been coming and generally letting people know you have arrived :)

Enjoy the forum...

Good idea this.

First came to watch Alty when I was 6 when a chap in my class at school took us all to watch a match for his birthday.  From this early introduction I, along with a couple of pals, became a regular and was even a programme seller for a couple of seasons.  When I learnt to drive we managed to get ourselves to such far flung outposts as Kettering, Kidderminster, and Telford, such was our enthusiasm.  When I went off to uni. my pals got swayed by the bright lights and fat pay-checks of the Premier league and I, too, found myself lured into a social mire of George Best-ian proportions that meant I allowed my attention to 'the boys' to lapse.

Anyway, to quote that roller-skating goddes, Gloria Gaynor, 'and now I'm back', and what made me want to come and watch Altrincham in the first place is the same reason that I'm enjoying watching them now.

Come on Reds!

Hi
My name is Tom and I have been watching Alty for about 11 years.
Living in Northamptonshire I don't get to regular home games and go to more away games than home.
My dad is from Sale and has followed Alty for years and I have followed despite the attraction of having a Man u season ticket holder in the family. I prefer to regularly go to games rather than just watch.

I am Tom and have been watching Alty most of my life, my dad got me involved and now it keeps us close and has made us great friends. I enjoy coming down because I feel appreciated and love the fact the players are real people and not put on a pedestal like players in the Prem.... Anyway long may dads get there children into the club so it keeps going for a long time to come.

My Dad also got me going to Alty games from a very early age, I think it was when I was about five or six. The majority of that age period is a blur to me, some things stick out though...
I remember he told me the morning after a night game that Stuart Coburn had scored.
I remember that Keith Russell player we signed for our record fee but not much about him to be honest.
I was a mascot for the pre-season friendly against Manchester United XI at some point, got to shake Paul Scholes' hand and everything.
We had a seated season ticket but I think my Dad preferred the popular side, where he used to speak to a winger called Jason Gallagher(?) before games. He hated that Leroy Chambers guy upfront.
Went to a few away games like Stalybridge, Hyde and Southport off the top of my head.

My Dad passed away last year but I have him to thank for not being sat at home watching United on Sky Sports. I am now nearly 17 and a regular along with lots of others of my age both home and away... I'm just waiting for our turn to see a giant-killing in the FA Cup now!

Dear all Robins,
Been watching Alty from afar (Market Harborough) for several years, although remember the days of Eddie Bishop - too many years ago; originally used to walk several miles across the golf course with my younger brother to matches!
Still have that Match of the day "goal of the month" from I think 1993ish on video
Able to get to some away games (last one Rushden),
Cheers
Market Harborough Alty

Good luck!  :)

I am a newby to the Forum!

Grandad took me to every home game in 1990-91 season at the age of 6!!! He fell ill and I didn't go again until 2006!

I live in Sheffield so you occasionally see me at away games with a blonde girl and a loud mouth!

I was also a mascot twice. Once against Farnborough and once against Horwich. My goodness they were good memories.

Actually mate, I'd put money on the fact we didnt sell replica shirts then.  The umbro kit we played in had no badge!

We could have been the first team ever to get promoted to the league with no badge on the players kit!

FA Trophy Quarter Final I think.

"Sliding Doors" game that may have changed the whole destiny of the club.We steamrollered Horwich, but if we had lost that game then we would have had two Saturday games against Slough & Northwich, instead of a two legged FA Trophy Semi-Final against Wycombe Wanderers.
Ken McKenna wouldn't have been sent off & in all likelihood would have played at Stafford & the final game of the season against Boston.

We probably would have won the league & who knows where we would be now!

Hi Folks, first time on the forum. I used to watch Alty home and away for many years in the 60's and 70's when my Dad worked for the club. I have now had a season ticket at Man City for 35 years but in the last 2 seasons have been to watch Alty a few times with Rob William's dad, although he has now left the club I will still get along to a few games. This week I will be paying my Patron fee as a big effort on and off the field will help get the Robins back in the Premier.   Dave Kennerley

Ah yes, those halcyon days of booking your seat on the coach for an away game at the Moss Lane Pools Office, where the sliding glass window would be pulled back to reveal Derek Kennerley or Beryl Fox....

Hi to everyone on the forum.I've been an intermittent guest for some time, but now with almost reliable broadband, and chrome goggles I'm here in person.
Yes, I did used to drive one of those cars with a wheel missing, which gave rise to my name. My association with Alty goes back to the early days of the Red Robin Club, and Peter Swales' notorious tombola on a Saturday night, but I've lived away for many a year now, and so rely on the website and forum to keep in touch.

Things we have in common : I too was a motorist with a 25% shortfall in the wheel department (but the old shed got us to a few away games), and I well remember that tombola, not least because I won my original vinyl copy of the Beatles' "White Album" from that very source ! Happy days - welcome aboard mate.

Hello I'm Robert,

I've lived in South Manchester all my life and Altrincham FC is my nearest club.

I have been following Altrincham FC since last season and been listening to the commentary on RadioRobins.com since my brother Antony started.

My first ever match was the last game against Vauxhall Motors FC and I will be comming to many more hopefully.

Regards.

Well done for taking some positive action...lets hope you get the bug and stay for a long time.

Dear Fellow Alty Supporters,

A few years ago, my mate, Ian, and I were bemoaning the state of premiership football.  So we decided to have a real footballing experience by watching our nearest club, Alty.  We watched the tail end of the 09-10 season and instantly became hooked.  We attended most home games last season with our two lads who have also become Alty fans despite the poor performance of the team overall last season.  I will never forget the look on my son's face when Eastbourne scored their fourth in the final game.
This season, we have also been on the road with the Robins to Vauxhall Motors and Hyde.  I suppose this is one of the advantages of being in the BSN.  We are trying to convince as my people in Lymm to start supporting their local team and rediscover the real game of football rather than the sanitized experience of Premiership football.

Mark, the Lymm Robin  ;D

I've never posted on this thread yet, better late than never.
Well I've been a City supporter all my life (and I still go to a few matches when Alty aren't playing!) and I started following Alty around February this year, at the end of last season. My first game was our 2-0 victory over Tamworth, which was a nice way to start my (hopefully) lifelong love of Alty. I don't live in Altrincham, but have many connections with the place such as going to school here and being round the general area nearly every day. I take the 370 bus to home games every Saturday and usually bring a mate or two who've never experienced the joy of this club! After 6 months of supporting Alty I'm already a season ticket holder and am looking forward to many happy years with the club!  ;D

Welcome Mike :)

Hello Altyfans
My first Alty match was against Leyton Orient in 79/80, as a lad I watched Alty with my mates quite a lot, I drifted away in about 1986. 4 years ago I saw the light and came back, I also brought my young lad along with me to watch his first match at Moss Lane, it was an instant hit, so much so we are both season ticket holders. Wherever we go on holiday he packs his Alty shirt and wears it with pride, Alty is in the blood.
All the best

After a break of a few years I started going again last season and go to all the home games when im not working. Tomorrow will be my first away game for a long time, im just hoping we play better than we did last weekend.

I'm the mystery TV quiz person (see the thread on Only Connect). I've been supporting Alty for, errm, a long time (I moved from Alty to London in 1980, so that should give you an idea). I go to all the games I can within reach of London, but since I can't drive, midweek games tend to be a non-starter. What with one thing and another, I've been a bit rubbish in the last couple of years - my last game was away at Hayes & Yeading last season.  I hope to get to Corby and Bishops Stortford, although Histon might be a bit more tricky. My dad is a season ticket holder at Moss Lane, and I hope to go to the Droylesden game with him if everything isn't snowed up for a third year running.

All the best,

Paul

Paul,

Welcome aboard.....and many congratulations on your team's impressive Only Connect triumph last evening.

Any chance that you could use your influence to cajole Victoria Coren into coming along to that Droylsden fixture, too...?

I'm a Golf Roader who has been watching Alty on and off for 30 years, I've been a season ticket holder for the last 7 or 8 years,I rarely miss a home game and rarely go to away matches. I own a copy of the Cup Fever film on video but it seems to have taken up residency at Ecky's house. (hint, hint)

Hello to you all I suppose I am ST wife of DT and I know that Gaz and Ecky will know who I am. I am also the auntie of Chris Brahney who  was brought up by his uncle David to support the Robins. Chris is missing at the moment and I would like you all to spread the word. He was last seen by his mates at the Stone Roses concert last Friday night. If you can help us to track him down and bring him home, please do so by accessing and joining the facebook group. Thanks Sue Tracey :)

Gosh, I know that he's a Timperley lad and his face looks familiar but I didn't realise his Alty connection runs this close. Fingers crossed this is a good luck story that turns out well and let's keep doing our bit.

All the best, hoping things turn out ok.

Hello fellow Altrincham FC supporters, my name is ReevesNumber1Fan and I have supported Alty for a year now, basically as you can tell by my username, Damian Reeves is my life, with him at Altrincham I can go to games excited for the classic Altrincham ups and downs knowing that Reevesy will be there on a monday night in January with short sleeves and no gloves spurring on the rest of the team and sending the terraces into songs like "lets all have a disco" (that one where we go mental). You don't see Messi playing like him on the cold January nights with short sleeves and no gloves, but Reeves, he completes me and after hearing the news about a new contract I felt it was my duty to create an account on the forum and spreat the Reevesy love.

Hello everyone, my name is Nick, I'm a nuclear engineer from Sale in my mid-forties.

I started supporting Altrincham 3 years ago, when I decided it was time to watch some proper football again.  (I was a Sunny Scunny regular when I was younger, Up the Iron!)
I bring my son and his mates to most home games and the odd away one.

I have enjoyed those 3 years and I am glad with my choice as Alty play entertaining football the way it is mean't to be played and no hoofball.
I have lurked on this website for 2 of those years, but now have plucked up the courage to start posting.

My posting name is in honour of the of the lovely lady in the main stand with spacial tourettes who (quite rightly) can't stand opposing teams non-playing staff's excursions out of the technical area...

... GET BACK IN YER BOX!!!  :)

Only been to a couple of games this season - somebody slap me now. Lived in Alty for 10 years but then forced to move to dirty Brum 3 years ago due to work. But hoping to come up more now the season is coming to it's final quarter.

First game - I think we played Rushden - must of been that memorable (H) '06

Been hooked ever since. The main reasons are what goes on behind the seasons. I thought there was so much character. Having supported United since '87, I'd decided that all my fgootie investment (time / dollar) was going into mighty Alty.

Hi all,

I can't remember what year I first started watching Alty but the first big game I remember was Tottenham away in '95 when I was 11. I still remember queuing up at the little safe box for my ticket. My uncle first took me to games and I got instantly hooked. I still go to games with my uncle, both home and away.

Had a season ticket for about 10 years now and Altrincham is the only team I support. They've give me so many memories both good and bad.

Ex-Altrincham fan here. I started going in 1984-5, and well remember the epic 85-86 season. My mate and I had some tremendous days out during that season - games which stand out are the FA Cup wins at Blackpool and Birmingham,  the 7-4 win over Nuneaton and the epic FA Trophy semi-final win over Enfield, a tremendous team at the time, and to top it all, the Wembley win.

Following that  funny do when John King and John Williams swapped jobs the following season, I lost a bit of enthusiasm, mainly because under Williams, Altrincham became a dull side to watch. I kept going for another season, but then went off to University. I came home for the weekend to watch the FA cup win over Lincoln in 1988. My last game was the hammering of Barnet (eventual champions) in 1991, shown live by Sky Sports as I remember.

Lots of happy memories, getting off the 371 at Timperley CC and walking through the golf course to the ground, and walking back in the pitch black after the game

I may even turn up next Saturday..........

Hope you can make it next Saturday, if you'd have come last season you'd have seen the closest we have ever got to replacing Paul Showler on the wing...

Hi All,

Have been lurking a few times, but thought I'd dive in and sign up !

Name is Matt, grew up in Timperley, followed Alty through the late 70s/80s - days of King, Allen, Howard, Stepney et al and still try and keep up as best I can. Don;t remember my first game, but do remember the Wembey trip vs Leatherhead, Bramhall Lane in the FA Cup and other great days out!

Spent 20 years living and working in London before emigrating over here to New Zealand four years ago. Has been difficult to keep up with what's happeniing in the game back home (outside of the Premier League), but I did manage to catch the Robins FA  Cup replay live on ESPN last season from Moss Lane, and managed to catch the friendly vs Halifax this summer when back visiting.

So here I am, a Robin amongst Kiwis and I think I own the only Alty shirt in NZ.

(BTW, I am also a qualified and active referee  but keep that quiet eh)

I've been exiled down south for 30 years but grew up watching the late 70's team of Rogers , Johnson , Heathcote , King , Owens etc .

Plenty of high and lowlights from those times :

1) Over 9,000 crammed into Moss Lane on a freezing January day for the FA Cup tie v Orient .
2) Surviving an FA Cup tie at Droylsden only to be verbally abused afterwards at Piccadilly station by some Spurs fans returning from a defeat at Old Trafford (they thought my Alty scarf was Man U. )
3) Cycling to homes games in all weathers and chaining our bikes to the railings at the local park.
4) Seeing Alty tonked 5-1 at home by Mossley in the Trophy .
5) Arriving at Anfield for the FA Cup tie, the Scousers were telling us our part-timers would lose 10-0 . Great reception for Alty at the end of the game from the Kop.
6) Struggling to a Boxing Day fixture at Macc only to find it called off due to a frozen pitch .
7) The Wembley FA Trophy Finals . I walked to the '82 and '86 finals which is not as impressive as it sounds as I lived in Wembley at the time .
8 ) Trouble at home games v Southport , v Crewe in the FA Cup and v Runcorn in a Trophy Semi Final .
9) Competing at a national level for the first time in the Alliance Premier League . Taking on and beating the supposedly stronger southern teams such as Weymouth , Maidstone and Bath City .

I don't get to see Alty as often as I'd like but I will be making the 4 hour journey to Moss Lane for the Play-Off Final . Let the good times roll !

I am a Sheffield Wednesday fan. I have followed Altrincham as my favourite non league team since the infamous 1990/91 season. I remember them going on their long unbeaten run with the goals of Ken McKenna and then losing out in the last 4 games. I remember Saint and Greavsie reporting on it saying they were favourites to go up and it all went wrong from there. I have been following their fortunes ever since and hoping that they would get that close again. Sat nervously checking the scores on Saturday and feared the worst when I thought it was going to penalties. Couldnt believe the finish! I have got to get to a game up there or some away game near to where I live. I live in Dronfield which is just a stones throw from the Sheffield F.C. ground which is where I get my fix of non league football at the moment. I have earmarked the Alfreton away game as a must see next season as that is the nearest Conference ground to me. Come on Alty!!!!!!

I am new to Alty.  I grew up in the SW watching a Yeovil side struggling in the conference before eventually getting relegated, only to watch them go on the up and up.  I moved away from that area when I was 20, never to return.  And now I have ended up in Urmston (as itís where the wife is from), and I want to come and watch some proper football; not the premadonna rubbish turfed up at OT just down the road.  So looking back to my Yeovil watching days, Alty came to mind. I came to the Lincoln game (my thoughts on that elsewhere) and hope to enjoy watching Alty for years to come.

Hi boys and girls. City fan here ( sorry ) who now lives down south, Have been to a couple of Alty games many years ago. From Stretford, wife from Sale. I was wondering what your away support was like. I am going to the game at Eastleigh ( jan 4th ) and didnt know whether it would be my 4 and a dozen others, or about 50. ( by the way, Scott Leather is my main man as i manage Alty on football manager)  :D Good luck in this important season, anything above 5th from bottom and build from there.

Started going to Alty around 91 in that season with Showler, McKenna etc some of the most exciting football I ever saw, try to get to most home games and a few of the closer away trips.

Just been approved so wanted to introduce myself...

I'm John and lived in Alty most of my life, but now live in North Shropshire, not far from Market Drayton.

In the early 90's I lived literally 2-3 doors from the ground and used ti pop home to warm up at half time. I then got married and football took a back seat for a while but now my lad is getting older we've got back into it and have been to pretty much every home and away game for a while now and loving it.

Ah, the "home of gingerbread", eh?

I happen to be married to a Shrewsbury Town fan who used to live in Bayston Hill.

Welcome back into the Alty fold.

Whereabouts within the vicinity of Moss Lane did you used to live?

That's the one, or so they say (I've yet to find any gingerbread there though ;)).

I use to live on Moss Lane - a couple of doors down on the right as you walk from the ground into Alty. Great little batchelor pad at the time with the football, off-licence, chippy, Chinese and (at the time) Indian take away all within staggering distance. What more could you ask for?

Many years later and I'm married with kids and bring my 16 year old lad to the Alty matches. He was born in the area too so is as big a fan as me. He's having some friendly fun with a Telford FC (our local Conference team around here) supporter at school and they are not doing quite as well as Alty this year  :P.

Do you get to many matches then? The Telford fan went very quiet a couple of months ago now. Can't think why ;).

I try to get to most home games and as many away games local to here that I can. I missed out on a lot last season due to not being well. My misses enjoys watching Alty as well.
I struggle with The night Games until the end of Sept as I crown green bowl on those evenings..

I'm John and have lived in Sale, Timperley & Sale again since 1956.  I started refereeing in 1965 and progressed via all Altrincham & Wythenshawe Leagues of the time, the Mid Cheshire League, Cheshire County League & NW Counties League to the FL line 1984-91 and the Conference Refs list 1985-91. Also have an FA Coaching qualification.  First watched the Robins in their last season as amateurs before White & Swales took over in the early sixties. At Grahame Rowley's 'invitation'. have been asked to write a page for all home programmes this season -"something different" he said!

Always glad to rake over the happy memories the game has provided....

Hello to everyone on the Altrincham forum.  I read the updates daily to see what is going on and, through a family association, I have more than a passing interest in what is going on.  Now that I know how to post something, I am looking forward to contributing throughout the 2016/17 season and beyond.

Erm, not a new member, but not posted on this login for a while.

Beaver (Chris Edwards). Been an Alty fan for nearly 30 years now, since I was 7. Live down south at the moment, travel a lot for work and lived in France before that so getting to games isn't so easy, but the passion and love for Alty never subsides.

I deleted my account in May because I got so fed up of all of the negative stuff being posted that was on the whole hyperbole and I felt being posted for the sole purpose of antagonising others. When it got to the point of personal abuse I called it a day. But like any other addiction youre never far away and when trying to register again i discovered this old account and got it going again.

In the meantime I contacted Gaz and offered to assist with moderating the forum. I believe that everyone has the right to an opinion, and to share it. Its always good to have the opposing view and nobody should be ridiculed for what they believe, although I think its also fair to point out when someone is being a bit silly.

I dont think we should ever tolerate personal abuse on the forum, its not on. Life is full of enough challenges without the thing that we all love and feel passionate about becoming a source of upset and abuse. If you dont like someone, just ignore them, i'm pretty sure they don't like you too. Hey-ho, thats life, I wasn't put here to be everyones mate, but I wasnt put here to make people feel bad about themselves either.

Racist, sexist and homophobic comments are another thing that I can't tolerate. Its 2016 for crying out loud, we've all got red blood and a soul, and we're all more similar than we are different. This forum is about Alty, save the rest for some other internet dungeon.

Peace and love everyone!

AND COME ON YOU RED AND WHITE B@ST@RDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recently returned to watching Altrincham after some health issues - as we won 4 of my first 5 matches back I was going to take the credit, but not after the last 10 days!

I stand outside the bar (despite being a tee-totaller) at home games with the Altrincham Athletics Club contingent and attempt to be optimistic, positive and constructive (exceot to referees), or failing that at least funny (the latter has proved easier in the last couple of matches).

Hello Mr Odd. I had thought this was maybe a joke, but it seems that it is genuine

You should come and visit soon. You will be very welcome, but these are dark days for the club. Do you know any oil rich Norwegians who maybe want to invest in our club, which may be small, but has fabulous heritage???

Hi, this is genuine indeed. Three Alty shirts have made the journey overseas to Norway and to me. Unfortunately I have not been able to make the trip the other way around. This season will be the season I'll make it though, I will at least do everything I can to make it happen.

It is indeed dark days, but our misery has to end sometime, right? All we fans need to do is keep our head up, and keep supporting the club though, there's nothing more we can do... I wish I knew a oil rich Norwegian, would have pointed him in the direction of Alty a long time ago, haha. That is not the case though, so we got to keep on going with what we have.

Love the club, and are looking forward to the upcoming season, hopefully with more to smile for than in the last two combined. Maybe with me on the stands for a match as well, who knows. Would definitley love to join the rest of the Altrincham community!

Love from Norway

Not an ardent Altrincham fan as such but certainly an interested bystander who follows Non-League football avidly and assiduously and one who had to double-take that it was in fact the real 'Altrincham' that were in the same League as Clubs like Shaw Lane and Coalville and not some reincarnated apparition or bogus phoenix Club...or indeed a printing error! Not decrying SL or C as someone is obviously throwing large amounts of cash about in the forlorn hope that one day they might emulate the 'bigger' Clubs but boy have you guys have been through the grinder to drop so low. Average home attendances well over 1000, and probably a lot more with a winning side, ground facilities comparable with many Conference sides and probably a decent travelling support to boot make you guys one of the catches of the century for these smaller Clubs who can hardly garner a steward for the gate never mind a crowd. Everybody decries 'sugar-daddies' as anathema to success but if ever there was a Club where judicious investment would probably reap huge returns then 'Alty' would be near the top, especially in the Manchester conurbation area where football is a religion and passion for the game runs high.
Best of luck for the season...and by the way, even we've heard of Damian Reeves!

Steve , returning Alty fan having last watched them when I was 9yrs old, I'm now 50 odd ,hmmm........ Decided to attend my home club as I have always had an eye on Alty results so never really lost touch , but being at the game and getting more involved is my aim.  My brother and Mrs are attending too which is a bonus . We are really enjoying the games at the moment. The standard and professionalism surprised me as its really good , so up and onward the Robins, common Alty !!!!

Been watching Alty since the mid 80's and even saw them win the FA Trophy at Wembley! My mums family are from Altrincham and used to get taken to watch them from a very young age, my first love is Manchester City and I've had a season ticket for thirty years but I've fallen out of love with the whole match day experience and given up my season ticket. I've really enjoyed watching Altrincham again apart from yesterday when we were very sloppy and should have won! But I'm going to keep attending the games.

Long time fan from Wythenshawe. Live a long way away now, but keen follower. Great matches with Dad in the 70's and 80's.
We really need to strengthen for National League North. Some very strong clubs in there will be going for it. Hereford, Darlington, Stockport, probably Southport will improve.
Come on the Robins.
