Title: Invasion game!!!
Post by: RocketDan on July 02, 2012, 10:49:52 PM
8th September - OXFORD CITY (away)

They averaged about 180 last season - how about we have a go at outnumbering them?

Big one for all the southern exiles as well - potentially a lot of peoples first look at our new look team.

Never post on the forum, and have been living abroad for most of last season, but funnily enough I'm moving to Oxford for a year at the start of September.

Needless to say, I couldn't believe my luck that I get to watch Alty play so locally, mint  ;D

It's a big one alright. Lot of pressure on Jimmy Hill that day to deliver some good pubs in his old manor. Luckily unlike our first ever visit to their big city neighbours I dont think we'll be getting run through the car park this time.

Calling a game an 'invasion game' tends to lead to three points to the opposition. I can't remember the last one we won.

I could have sworn it got re-branded to a 'slightly larger than average away following day' midway through the season

It did but that wouldn't fit on the T-shirts so we went back to INVASION game.

This MUST be an invasion game. It's a great city for pubs and their ground looks to be pretty easily accessible.

If we can take 150 to Forest Green in the arsehole of nowhere, we can get 200 to this one  ;D

I think so but they are really more Cotswolds/Gloucstershire than Oxford.

Bath Ales have a pub in Oxford now. It's brill. Although probably not very exciting for Bath Alty  ;D

Oxfordshire Ales, Hook Norton, Wychwood and Brakspear are the big local ones. But there's sh*t loads of choice throughout the city. No Dunham Massey, though  :D

Don't they do one called Old Hooky, very nice , I think.
It's a constant source of annoyance to me that real ale is so much better down south!

Lovely beer.

Look hard and you can find some gems - Dunham Massey Ales are superb, up here we have Arran, Black Isle and the unconventional Brewdog. Then there's some decent Ales in the Lake District: Jennings, Hawkshead, Coniston Ales etc.

Post by: fuertes on July 04, 2012, 04:57:54 PM
Brewdog have sold out a bit by moving towards keg. I still like their bottled beers though. Most of them being ridiculously strong.

As for real ale being better down south...madness! Loads of great breweries up north. Marble might be my absolute favourite (although Brodies of London are challenging).

Not actually been to that area, but seems to be a bus ride away from the train station, or walkable if you enjoy long walks, it'd be pretty scenic.

Many Northern beers are improved immeasurably if you get them to take the infernal sparkler off the pump.

SW i normally agree with you perspicacious comments however this time you are talking bollocks proper beer should have a creamy head boddingtons poured without the dogs dick was not worth paying for and beers like Tetleys, Timmy Taylors, Theakstons etc are better for this method of dispense. you are entitled to your incoreect opinion but have obviously turned into a shandy drinking southern poof (can one still say that)

I await a substantive reply containing reasoning for your  current southern girly status.

Decent beer is served through pumps with no sparkler, and is pulled by a comely wench whose pectoral embellishments are all the better for the exercise. She herself may be pulled later in ideal conditions.

This match wasn't in my plan for the season, but I could be tempted if finances permit !

In fairness most of those beers are now dead or nothing like they're original status.

Their, not they're....too much shandy.

Also, Timothy Taylor's is widely available in the south now, not sparklered and so much better for it. Often the head on beer is an excuse for a short measure, not many lined glasses about.

Theakstons Old Peculiar has always been one of my favourite beers, but it is either my imagination or not as good as it used to be!

Other than that, I totally agree with Taxi Phil - especially regarding the comely wench (no relation to Comely Excell!)

Almost upon us, ladies and gents. I know we've been to this city before, but for those unfamiliar or who haven't been in a while...

A good option is to walk towards the city from the train station, up Hythe Bridge Street, until you get to a bend in the road at the bottom of George Street. Start walking up George Street for a short while until you find Wetherspoons - ideal for a spot of brekky/brunch/lunch and a pint.

Then, cross the road from Wetherspoons, keep walking up George Street for a min or two until you reach the Odeon Cinema. Turn left there, walk straight for a little while along Gloucester Street then right into a tiny little walkway called Friar's Entry where you'll find this pub: http://www.maddingcrowd.co.uk/ It's a good sized venue with loads of beer. Well worth a visit.

When you come out of there, you can walk the rest of the way up Friar's Entry until you come out on Magdalen Street. The 14A bus goes from right there (Stop C4) to right next to Oxford City's ground. Dead handy.

Then you can do some of the zillions of other good pubs back in town after the game before getting the 8.36 back to Manchester or one of the many of trains back to the smog for London Alty.

...or, you know, just do your own thing and enjoy the day ;D I reckon that's a handy way to get things off to a good start, though!

We're going to win 1-2, by the way. Reeves brace.

Not been this excited by an away game since we got relegated.

London Alty will be on an early doors train from Paddington for this one, fully canned up.

Pubs TBC as yet, the Four Candles being near the station and cheap seems a logical starting point though. Their social meant to be decent as well.

Epic day out in prospect...

Hi, Oxford Utd fan here (though often go to watch very local side Oxford City). Re: pubs - avoid the chainy pubs in George St & head towards Broad St where you've got the excellent White Horse, Kings Arms & Turf Tavern. If you want a decent drink within walking distance of the ground head to the Victoria Arms in Old Marston (link below). Its a great pub right on the river Cherwell & you could wander up to the ground in 10-15 mins.

http://www.victoriaarms.co.uk/home.php

You'll be made very welcome at City & there'll be no repeat of the distasteful incidents that marred your previous visits to Oxford. I've heard a whisper that a rep from OUFC will be checking out Reeves but then I guess every club is looking at him at the moment.

All the best & enjoy your trip......

Thanks alot for the info, sure we are all gratefull.

But you don't want Reeves! He's sh*t, he plays like he has a twisted ankle most the time (never running and never alert) We best keep him here where he has a couple of friends that hand him the goals when he never actually deserves them. So go ahead and let the Oxford Utd scout know he doesn't have to waste his time on him!

Maybe look at Scott Spencer of Hyde or Leighton McGivern? Ofcourse you'll have to find him first!

I'm sure we're all appreciative of the thought, but let's have it right, the Kings Arms and Turf Tavern are both chain pubs. And although the White Horse is worth a visit, it's bloody tiny. Two dozen people in there and there's not an inch to spare.

Far From The Madding Crowd is a better bet. Certainly pre-match, anyway.
