Title: Statue
Post by: andrewflynn on December 09, 2015, 09:58:07 AM
You're tasked with immortalising one Altrincham legend with a statue outside the ground. Who do you choose and why?

Jackie Swindles for obvious reasons

See that's who I'd have said but I'm obviously not of the era. Interesting to see if people think differently.

Obviously it's hypothetical but you can't have anyone from this era because they have won nothing I'm not knocking them for that times have changed

Jackie Swindells without a doubt

For the sake of the thread, I'll change the question slightly.

You have to pick three, much like Old Trafford's "Holy Trinity" of Best, Law and Charlton.

Jeff Johnson is number 2 for me

Post by: andrewflynn on December 09, 2015, 11:29:00 AM
For me it'd be Swindells, Coburn, and somebody from the time in between.

It's in the national football museum next to Victoria now.

Seconded. But I think honourable mentions should also go to Roy Rees, Tony Sanders and John King.

Good call.. As you know, I am of that era. Noel & Pete also had a decent record shop in Alty ... Freddie was a scrap metal dealer... we had some good players back in those days...

Barry Diamond, Barry Crowe and Neru McKenzie

Is that the Barry Diamond who played for Rochdale (and County) in the 80s?
Title: Re: Statue
Post by: Hamilton on December 09, 2015, 03:41:57 PM
Surely Graham Heathcote would have to be condidered.

Whereas Best, Law and Charlton were exceptional and did stand out from the rest, Alty has many, many greats in so many different ways from Swindells goalscoring to Heathcotes longevity in many roles, from Saunders management to Kings grit, leadership and determination, from Swales and Whites chairmanship to that of Goodwin and Rowley, from Davisons great consistency and record international appearances to Coburns brilliance and loyalty.

Personal favourite - John King - although I can understand why some of the others were mentioned in preference :)

Heathcote, King & Saunders or the Birch brothers & Hughie. Never saw Swindles so very hard to comment, of my era Ricky Harris, Stuart Coburn & Heathcote again.

Duncan  if he goes on to play for England, moves to a top Premier league club  and we end up with a  major sell on clause windfall enabling a push towards the play offs/football league.

If it had to be any one individual then Noel White for me. The success when he was chairman over two decades is unparalleled here. Its telling that he left us for the top club in the land at that time and, when he did go, we entered a slow gradual decline.

Dunno scored an overhead kick in his first game vs northwich and then was rubbish

Could we have clarification on this.
The question was a legend.
Then it was three.
Now are we saying, we just ain't talking about players.
If it's not just players, we could put, Jenny & George Heslop, Keith Davey, Jack Thorpe etc.
I'm totally confused!?!?!?!?,

Chris Senior

But what if the statue disappears? We will all be asking where the Chris Senior statue is!

There are that many candidates that have been suggested. We should put a statue up of all of them. It will be like the terracotta army on parade up Moss Lane  :D

My question was one, when it was quickly established that Swindells was a likely answer for everyone I changed it to three for the sake of the thread serving a purpose.

An Altrincham legend, obviously, doesn't have to be a player. Managers and club figures certainly.

Pick your own crappest player, build a feck off big statue and think about how crap some of the Unihond years were. Use it to motivate the club!

A Terra Cotter army isn't a bad idea and would be a first for a football club. It would be a striking display but relatively cheap to produce. Head and shoulders would do it.

Yeah, very static. But off the field he's got his feet well and truly on the ground.

I still remember turning up at Weymouth for the Trophy Quarter Finl in 76-77 to discover they were nicknamed the Terracotta's, usually abbreviated to Terras. And a neat link between this thread and Saturday's game!

To do justice to our famous club despite my deep love for Jackie Swindells I think that a group bronze of the 1978 Trophy Winning Squad with Tony Sanders & Warbie would best sum our club up. So many greats there... the finest Non League team ever to have played the game. That day was and will remain the best football day of my life.

How about one of Bernard Taylor, a truly great man and a club legend. Some of my best moments supporting Alty were down to him.
