Title: Two new signings
Post by: Mrs Warbouys on November 04, 2016, 01:20:37 PM
Altrincham FC is pleased to announce two new signings on the eve of their FA Cup tie at Lincoln City. Both players are eligible for selection for that First Round tie at Sincil Bank.
The new players are:

Curtis Obeng (d.o.b. 14 Feb. 1989): Curtis will be best known to Alty fans as a former Wrexham defender. He had very recently joined Macclesfield Town (27 October 2016) from Swansea City.
Curtis was at Wrexham from summer 2009 till January 2012 when he moved up to Swansea City and he spent nearly five years at the Premiership club. He was released in October 2016 but, whilst with the Welsh club, he had loan spells at four Football League clubs, namely Fleetwood Town (3 months), York City (one month), Stevenage (more than 3 months) and Newport County (3 months)

Simon Lenighan (d.o.b. 13 May 1994): Midfielder Simon joins Altrincham from Warrington Town. He started out with Leeds United (2012-15). From Elland Road he had loan spells with FC Halifax Town (February -June 2014) and Alfreton Town (February to April 2015). He then joined Rotherham United on a free transfer.

Thought I'd recognised the name of the second player....remember someone's forum (think it was Harrogate) going apesh*t about them signing a while ago!

Is Curtis Obeng a loan signing or permanent? Presume it's loan as he only signed for Macc last week!

Looks like he's gone from macc already without playing a game. HAVE WE GOT INTERNATIONAL CLEARENCE WITH HIM PREVIOUSLY BEING AT SWANSEA

Obeng could be a quality signing if he's anywhere near as good as he was a couple of years ago but I thought that about Emile Sinclair! Never heard of the other lad but there's plenty of quality players in leagues below. Welcome to Alty fellas.

A quick Google on Simon Lenighan produces far from pretty results.

Just googled him. While I'm strongly against what he did everyone deserves a second chance and if he helps get us out of the deep sh*t we're in then happy days!

Agreed everyone does deserve a second chance, let's hope he help us out of our current situation. Do we know what type of midfielder he is? Also from what I remember Obeng is a full back?

Obeng is a 5' 8" right back who was in the same Man City youth team as Daniel Sturbridge,Micah Richards,Ben Mee etc. Anyone know what type of midfielder Lenighan is?

We're in no position to be pious, and our level is where footballers rehabilitate themselves after a set back. Lots of people make mistakes and do stupid things when they are young. We've had many players over the years that have made mistakes in their younger days. It's just that information is so freely available on the internet now. Good luck to both

Well, Graham Heathcote did say we lacked nastiness on the pitch...I think we may have taken him literally here.

As others have said this lad has been punished by a judge and now has to get on with his life and make good. We might need to be reminded of a certain Lee Hughes who ran rings around our defence for fun last week.

Not to mention the fact that just going off internet media for information is no basis to judge a person.

Welcome to Alty lads, give it everything youve got!

Both lads have good football pedigree and have played at this level too so it bodes well. Positive thinking!
Title: Re: Two new signings
Post by: Teasierbeaver on November 04, 2016, 04:10:25 PM
Just to add, if we want to judge this lad by the internet lets focus on football and go with what Stuart Mellish the Warrington manager has said about him:

"Simon Lenighan is top drawer, he should be playing at a higher level.

“He’s had some issues, but we want to get him enjoying his football again. His attitude has been first class.

"Within ten minutes of his first training session, the players were commenting on how good he was!"

Lets get this lad in the mood and happy at Alty so he can keep us at a higher level than Warrington!

I hope I'm right when I read between the lines and while not condoning the reaction can understand the pressure valve went ...thanks to a few stupid words said that were clearly very personal.

Terrible thing to be falsely accused of rape I'd imagine.

So Good luck to both players.....clean slate as far as I'm concerned will delete my google history now and eliminate the findings from my memory  :)

I agree with everything that's been said here, the lad will have to carry that baggage for the rest of his life but he deserves the chance to move forward and hopefully he can do so with us.

Welcome to both Simon and Curtis. Hopefully they become valuable additions to the squad.

If I am right, Curtis is son of Jerry Obeng. Jerry was a classmate of mine through Primary and secondary school. I have not seen him since our school reunion in 1986.

I sincerely hope dad follows his son at games, it will be great to have a catch-up with him again.

Curtis, good luck I am forward to watching you, bring your dad to the games!!

Good to see that Jim Harvey is obviously on the case - they both play in positions where we need reinforcement and both have good football pedigrees, which is in the end what matters to us I guess, particularly in the mess we find ourselves in. And at this time of the season not the easiest thing to find good players willing to sign for a struggling club. Welcome to Curtis & Simon and may their stay at Altrincham be a long, happy and productive one. Certainly I would expect they will both get an early first team chance!

Speaking of which, how about for tomorrow:

Deasy

Obeng
Hannigan
Thomas
McWilliams

Richman or Moult

Patterson
Wilkinson
Lenighan

Miller

Reeves

Subs Dawber, Lawrie, Cyrus, Moult or Richman, Marsh, Cain, Hobson

If the two new guys are match fit of course! That would by my count be 35 players this season, and I suspect we are nowhere near finished with debutants this season as JH's trawl for new blood continues. As the ancient Chinese curse goes, "may you live in interesting times".

Lenighan has been playing regularly for Warrington so match fitness shouldn't be a problem in his case,Obeng has been training with Macc so should be physically fit at least...

What an ideal fixture to get our first home win in the league

As he was in that youth team hopefully he'll have some ideas on keeping James Poole quiet next weekend then! Great to see the reaction on here regarding Lenighan. As I said earlier, Harrogate forum went into total meltdown when there was talk of signing him so let's hope their loss is our gain.

I'm sure that most of us on here would readily admit to having made plenty of mistakes.

However, I very much doubt that such 'mistakes' would include headbutting a woman.

Having said that, Simon Lenighan has served his punishment and now deserves the chance to make headlines for far more positive reasons.

With reference to some of the earlier tweets on this thread, truth can be MUCH stranger than fiction sometimes. Wonder if Clayton has any 'lifelong friends' who fancy a three division drop to help out a team in crisis?
