Title: Andy Reid - RIP
Post by: Steve from Sale on October 27, 2017, 03:12:59 PM
So sorry to hear of the death of Andy 'Hagar' Reid. A fully committed and uncompromising player who served Altrincham FC well during his tenure there. Not known by a few of our younger fans, he was a superb defender who took no prisoners during his years mainly as a centre back.

It may interest you all to know that my elder son takes his middle name from Andy Reid. We had decided on a first name already, but were trying to think of a middle name for him also. After trying one or two different ones, I got an Alty programme out of my bedside draw, and went through the current Alty team players at the time. That is how we picked out his name. Christopher ANDREW Pugh is now 26, and currently on holiday in the Philippines/Indonesia region.

He has the same determination as Andy Reid did, but has not yet played for Altrincham! He was at the game with me V Halesowen and said that he had never seen Altrincham play that type of football, and will be visiting the club again soon on his return from holiday. He, Alex and I thoroughly enjoyed the match. Chris particularly liked our style of play, though he himself is currently left-back for AFC Didsbury.

I am so sorry to hear of the death of Andy Reid and would be grateful if the club could pass on my condolences to his family.

I was sadly given this news last Friday by an ex player and good friend of Andy and asked to say nothing until it was made public. Dreadful news. A big player and big part of my and many others formative years, so so sad.

By all accounts, a player and man the likes of which us younger fans have never, and probably will never experience. My condolences to Andy's family and friends, and the fans who will have no doubt been rocked by his passing.

Was my favourite player in the McKenna,Showler team and he gave me his boots at the end of the season because they weren't allowed to give their shirts out,an absolute beast of a central defender. RIP Andy, hope you are at peace.

Very sad news. A more committed player you couldn't wish to see wear the red and white stripes.

RIP

Andy Reid was one of the players that sticks in my mind the second season id been following Alty, the 94-95 one, great partnership with Paul France.

RIP Andy

For a small dose of humour I hope he’s retaking that well known throw in up there!

What wretched news this is.

Probably best remembered as an uncompromising and reliable central defender (alongside some appearances either at right full back or as a central midfielder).

I was proud to sponsor his shirt during that memorable 1994/95 GM Vauxhall Conference season.

Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Very sad news for a player who was a fixture in the side for several seasons.

Condolences to his family and friends.

The fact that he moved from us into the league, won an England semi pro cap and played in probably the best two Alty sides in the post Noel White era sums up the quality of player he was.

Terrible news, RIP.

Such sad news, like MJD I was told last Thursday,  but had to keep silent.
A player who gave you everything . As a supporter, you couldn't ask for more.
He did get on the wrong side of the officials at time, but he had to show his authority.
He will be missed.
My thoughts go out to his family and close friends.

Like others I have very fond memories of Andy Reid. He was a stalwart of the Alty team around the time that I really started watching Alty home and away.

I’ll share a memory of him. We were playing Colwyn Bay away in the trophy and as the players were warming up he came over and had a quick chat. His words were ‘What a dump. Let’s just get the win and get out of here!’. Naturally we didn’t win and drew 3-3 last gasp. Haha, it was still a good day out though and if I remember correctly we won the replay and it’s possible that’s the game in which he scored the cracking goal that Hash mentioned.

Rest in peace Andy Reid, you were an important part of my love for Alty, you’ll be missed I’m sure.

Absolutely the saddest of sad news. Difficult to explain really, although Hash does a bit, but he and the rest of the team were heroes and we bonded with them largely unlike modern times, a real part of our youth and happier times has passed. Rest in peace Reidy

Didn't Andy Reid get sent off near to the end of that FA Trophy tie at Colwyn Bay...?!

He certainly scored in the replay, which Alty won 2-0.

He did get sent off in that game. I also recall the aforementioned incident when he came over to the fans before the game.

So many good memories of Reidy, but my favourite must be a night out in Chester with Reidy, Stuart Terry and Barry Butler. World in motion blaring out of his car on the way as he and Terry had just been selected for England and stopping to recover Barry Butlers ladder on the M56 which had loose from his car roof (Barry was a window cleaner). Reidy never forgave me for throwing up in his car on the way back. Great banter, great man, great player RIP

Those are the type of stories that put a massive smile on your face! The players that we grew up with back then were different class!

Another fond memory is from Welling, blazing hot day last game of the season (think it was the Saturday before that infamous Cheshire Cup final with Witton on the bank holiday). Towards the end of the game ball goes out of play by the touchline where I was stood, as ever in those days well oiled with can of beer in hand. Reidy runs over to take the throwing and shouts come on lad I need some of that and then proceeds to take the can from my hand and downs most of my beer with a belch before nonchalantly taking the throwing. Class

I remember that.  I was stood with my bro and Shaun Constable who was injured during the match.  We went to the pub next door after the match and our players were on the table next to us so we chatted and they couldn’t believe that Alty had fans in London!  That there fancy place  ;)

What a turnout for Andy today.
The video the family showed of Andy was so moving. They showed highlights of the Spurs game.
Good to catch up with  past Alty players .

For the family, you and Andy will always be in our hearts.
