Title: Ashton Utd Match Thread
Post by: Alty Dave on February 05, 2018, 02:02:24 PM
Assuming the match goes ahead will JJ be fit?

What line-up would you go with?

Personally I would like to see Josh play just behind Jordan, Richman and Harrop in midfield

I agree. I would like to see Hancock number 10 and Richman and Harrop in mid. Mix it up a bit. More energy.

Hancock in place of Poole?

I think Poole does more than he's often credited for

He does a lot more than given credit for. He's the most gifted footballer in the team, barely gives the ball away and make the team tick. First name on the teamsheet for me.

I get that playing both Josh Hancock and James Poole in the same team is a bit tricky. However, only one winner if it's a case of one or the other - James Poole just has that extra bit of vision to create something special - one of the first names on my team sheet too.

Alty 8/13
Draw 11/4
Ashton 10/3

Ashton away win seems the most popular bet today

Is the game on? I've just checked the fixtures on the website whilst arranging a lunch out and notice it already says postponed!

"Match 30 - Postponed from 25.11.17" according to the list I've just viewed. Mind you, I'd be very surprised if it wasn't called off again in the next 24 hours or so - being purely selfish I hope a decision is made and publicised before 5pm tomorrow. If the game does go ahead it could well be a real tester for us.

I suspect that’s a typo, they have put the ‘ postponed ‘ message on the wrong line — should have put it on the line above ( Mickleover)

I think both Moult and Poole are vastly underrated by many.

I'm guessing Hannigan and Johnson won't be available.

Only decision is Richman or Harrop. Richman for me in what will a hard encounter.

I rate both Poole and Moult. I have always said Moult wins those important headers. For me it's about Moult looking a bit sluggish and both Richman and Harrop are playing better. Harrop can play Moult's role. PP wont drop Moult anyway.
With Poole it's whether he deserves to be in there after some ineffective performances. Yes I know he scored the scrappy equaliser. However Hancock has played better than him as the number 10.
I don't mean as a permanent change but maybe freshen it up.

Both Moult and Poole will start. Don't disagree with Harrop and Richman starting but not in such critical game. I more confident with Moult plus 1 than no Moult.

Disagree about Poole, he's a cut above.

Fair enough. Lawrie was technically a cut above than most Alty players around him, but was lazy and ineffective.
I just hope Poole doesn't become like him. Just for the record Poole is much better than Lawrie.
I do really like Poole and Moult, just going on merit for what I have watched.

Half an hour later, still snowing - but it's very light and still isn't sticking. If it stops by 11 we shouldn't be too bad.

Still not confident, I thought there would have been at least a precautionary inspection in the early evening.

So did I; I'll have to set off by 5.30 latest to be sure of arriving in good time for kick-off. For what it's worth, the snow is light but sticking up here - the forecast is much the same till early evening. If we were playing away I would not be expecting the game to go ahead.

Hopefully get another update before 5:30 then, no doubt others are in the same situation.

Light sleet now by the ground. Appears to be easing off. Nothing stuck snow wise.

It's 0.5 degrees C. Watching a match won't be much fun. Glad I haven't got to play in one.

Dawn should sell plenty of Bovril tonight.

For me, the quantity of snow going on the pitch is the concern, not whether it is sticking or not. Whilst it sticking would be a bigger problem, the level of water falling on to an already sodden pitch puts this game in serious doubt in my opinion.

Hopefully it will go ahead but not so keen if the pitch condition is going to be a big hinderence to our playing style.

Are you sure they weren't? I was informed they have been on since Saturday, just re-positioned once or twice to cover different areas.

I've just uploaded an image of the pitch from the gantry: https://twitter.com/altrinchamfc/status/960914571081994240

Notably, if you zoom into the goalmouth it doesn't look anywhere near as bad now. I believe it has been sanded.

One of our better performances for the first 80 minutes tonight, I thought we totally dominated the game. Given recent strong performances, from Warrington and Witton, I thought Ashton were pretty poor in comparison.
Great contributions from Hampson on the wing, Hancock looked sharp, James Poole played well and Harrop was deservedly man of the match.
We just lost our way after the substitutions, we missed Hulme up front and Hampson wide left, although you coule see what PP was trying to do, 3-0 up with 10 minutes to play.

Agreed. Jones was very good again until his injury. Fell apart with Jones and Moult off. How good is Hampson at left back? and Harrop, his energy and vision is excellent.
I hope it is nothing serious for Jones.
Next Tuesday against Shaw Lane is huge.
The pitch was better than I expected.

Firstly massive well done to the ground staff for the pitch. 10 times better than i was expecting. Still no bounce in some areas but playable.

Started really sharp and should have been home and hosed at ht. As stated lost our way after Jones and Moult went off. Desperately need Jones or Hannigan back for Saturday.

Told you all Richman should have started instead of Harrop!!

3 points is what matters, and they didn't score from open play.

I'd gone to this game expecting Ashton to score and I'd rather they got that goal from the free kick right at the end rather than one of those they had in the first half. They allowed Altrincham too much space to get forward, and their goal keeper surely wasn't their first choice. He was awful from the moment he dropped the ball over the line for a corner at the start. You got the feeling the Altrincham players smelled blood after that.

What was Thompson so steamed up about after their penalty?

Could have been 4/5-0 infront before we had to change things around. Thought we played very well and scored three very good goals. Ashton haven’t lost since October and will make the playoffs, 3-2 flattered them though. Hope jones hamstring is only a tweak rather than anything more serious. Shaw lane are clinging to our leg like a homesick turd, 6 points more by this time next Tuesday will be more than welcome

That's our best performance for a couple of months, at least for the first 80 odd minutes.  Some great football on a pitch that surprisingly allowed it and loads of chances.

Tony Thompson was upset about the stop start nature of Aaron Chalmers run up for the pen.  Apparently it's not allowed anymore.

I've got five of the next 6 Tuesday's getting home at 2am to look forward to now!

I thought some of the football in the first hour was wonderful - even the miserable old gits in front of me in the main stand (who are notoriously hard to please) were shouting words like 'majestic!'

Harrop was brilliant all night and I'm still not quite sure how anyone can't tackle Poole, I'm not sure what he does. He finds space in the same way Tom Kearney used to (and his time with us was tragically cut short).

The manager took a liberty removing his captain; for all his endeavour I'd have removed Harrop instead for the last 15.

Also - the hysteria around the pitch was ridiculous, it played OK and as long as we continue to monitor it closely, we'll get through the season fine.

Also, in the build up to the penalty the Ashton player on the right wing was well offside.
