Title: Intertoto Cup Draw:- Isle of Man Away 🇮🇲
Post by: Mrs Warbouys on May 29, 2018, 06:52:49 AM
Bill Waterson, Altrincham FC director, announces that "We will be playing the Isle of Man representative side, in Douglas, on Saturday 14th July, with a 5pm kick off. Steam Packet Holidays can sort out ferry and hotel options, and are quoting £95 per person including one night accomodation. Our contact there is Catreeney Denham, and she can be reached either on 01624 645777 or by e-mail.
There are also flight options with the 07:20 Easyjet flight from Liverpool currently being the cheapest. Flybe also offer flights from Liverpool, and there are also flights from Manchester, which tend to be more expensive. For the southern based fans, there is a good EasyJet flight from Gatwick, or a BA alternative from London City".

Unlucky!

It's a busy summer for the Isle of Man, as they are also competing (as Ellan Vannin) in the CONIFA World Cup for "independent football associations" in the south east of England.

Looking at their squad for that tournament, the vast majority are based on the island, but one player is from Bottesford Town in the Northern Counties East League, and I know one or two readers will be interested to see that Seamus Sharkey is a Sligo Rovers player.

I believe they're two different sides - Ellan Vannin are an unofficial team and not recognised by FA, but tolerated. I think because the Isle of Man has aspirations of following Gibraltar into European competitions

I suspect some of the same players may play in both, but, after looking into it, you are right, they are two different teams, and the Isle of Man representative side only select players from the Isle of Man League, so the two I mentioned won't be involved. When Ellan Vannin played Yorkshire recently, I heard something about the Yorkshire players resigning from their clubs before the game, then rejoining them afterwards, so they didn't play against an unrecognised association while being a member of a club subject to the FA. As the Ellan Vannin players all play for Isle of Man FA clubs, they may do likewise?

I think those aspirations of following Gibraltar have been blocked  as FIFA/UEFA  no longer allow dependent territories to join, but those already in, such as Gibraltar, can remain.

I can imagine that the Yorkshire player that was most twitchy about getting involved in that process was Callum Charlton. :o

Anyone know where the ground is on the Isle of Man?

The island  representative team's usual venue is The Bowl, on Pulrose Road, on the south west side of Douglas. It's a 3000 seat all seater stadium, with one side covered, and a plastic pitch.

I've not heard anything to say that it won't be played at The Bowl.

The Douglas Bowl has a good 4G pitch It was an excellent playing surface a couple of years ago when the Ladies played the IOM women's team.

Rare to look forward to a friendly, but very much looking forward to it.

When I booked last week we were already booking up a second hotel. Granted there may not have been many spaces in the first once, but still sounds like there’s plenty of Robins visiting.

It sounds as if it's shaping up to be our own rather curious version of Love Island.

I thought the intertwobob  cup was disbanded a few years ago.
Do the winners get into the Europa league then?

I don't know if this is any sort of guideline but the Isle of Man drew 0-0 with Connah's Quay Nomads at The Bowl yesterday. The Nomads' starting lineup included John Disney and Andy Owens.

I've emailed to check and had the following back :-

"Thank you for your email,

They do have TV’s on board and as far as we are aware they will be showing the football in the bar area. This will be subject to the aerial signal during the crossing.

Melanie Jones – Passenger Services Supervisior"

Will we be on board for the full duration of the final, though? Can't think of anything worse than getting off in Liverpool and having to rush to find somewhere.

It looks fairly consistent at 2h 45mins,

So depart 3pm, kick off 4pm, arrive 5:45 when I guess its pretty much the end of normal time?

The return sailing is 7pm so I dont suppose they hang around !

I have no idea how quickly you are turfed off, but not many games are finished just 105 minutes after they have started nowadays. Personally, I am going to the island for a few days, so it won't affect me, but you might have to try to hang around the bar on the ship or find a pub near Pier Head depending on how the game is going!

Should we make the final, I’ll probably opt to fly to Manchester early to watch the final on solid ground.

If anyone needs Car Parking in Liverpool for the ferry,

I've just booked at https://uk.secure-a-spot.com/home/carparksearch  in Capital Parking Liverpool - I used to have contract parking there when I worked in the centre for a while so I'm happy its as secure as it could be.

Only cost £5.45 for the whole weekend, but note you need to book sat and sun as 2 full days 0:15 - 23:45, using add day, and then give them a call to merge the booking together as you won't be exiting and reentering sat/sun.

Its pretty close to the ferry terminals.

Hope that helps someone.

Certainly helped me, Beaker, thanks. I'd have had no idea about what is a fantastic deal, or how to access it, without the link and advice. Very much appreciated.
