Title: Boston United : Playoff Final match thread
Post by: One Foot in the Grave on July 25, 2020, 07:57:16 PM
I saw nothing tonight to make my knees knock.

Of the 5 they scored, two were dodgy penalties (ref was really poor), one was an outrageous fluke, and one came when Gateshead over-committed and left a space the size of the Sahara Desert for their strikers to exploit. The third goal was quality, but that's just one.

Of the 3 they conceded, two were down to poor defending of set pieces, the other from a nailed-on penalty that came under minimal pressure. Their keeper looked really dodgy.

If we play like we did today, and don't get a weird referee, we should be fine.

Prediction 1-1  until the 89th minute when Tom Peers crashes the Alty forum with a last minute goal that sends us
 Back to the NL

We are Alty Fc and we are on are way back.

Boston scored five today, they'll be very happy with that. They bummed us five nil early on in the season too. We'll not be that poor again and the way we managed the game at York when two up was a massive step up from the Chester game.

As usual the first goal is important, if we can score that then we're well in.

I would like it if we were at home versus a team we had stuffed five love earlier in the season.

To be honest, Boston was the team I was most worried about coming into the playoffs, they were the form team before the season was suspended. I didn't see too much today to change my view, and like us, they will be sharper with a competitive game under their belts.

Having said that, we look likely to score against anyone at the moment and I think we have a good chance if we can keep it tight at the back.   If.....

The title of this thread certainly has a nice ring to it 👍.We have a good playoff final record (Stoke and Guiseley) so let's hope this continues.

Boston are the best side I've seen us play this season, but we put in a woeful performance that day (difference story perhaps if Hulme had put his early chance away).

Score first, it's ours to lose. Boston score first, it could be a long afternoon on a big pitch.

Boston were my favourites to be promoted at the start of the play offs. I saw them at Southport a little while ago and I was very impressed. They're a well-oiled machine, very physical and not afraid to use a bit of gamesmanship either.
Are they a better footballing team than us? No, I don't think so. Will that get us through? I'm not putting money on it, but I was wrong for the York game so here's to being wrong again.

To be fair, Southport made the majority of their opponents look good this season.

Like us, they'll be more solid than the Gateshead game with the game time under their belts.

We're a very different team to the one that they stuffed earlier in the season, so let's hope they're the ones being complacent - not us.

Wayno, if this is one of those "Alfreton Town 0 Altrincham 3" predictions, I will be very very happy. (I wouldn't have minded in the least if Ricky Harris hadn't been one of the scorers but it made for great telly)

If it does end up 2-1 to Alty, can we have you predicting every game?  ;D

Boston’s last five results

W Telford 1-0
L Gateshead 0-3
D brackley 0-0
D curzon 0-0
W Gateshead 5-3

Sixth best home record in the league from 15 games, 10 wins 3 draws 2 defeats. Scored 23 conceded 11
They’ve only scored more than two goals at home on two occasions this season, against Altrincham and York (before last weeks playoff game)

The only game they’ve won by more than a two goal margin has been against Altrincham

Depending on Whites' ankle knock same starting 11.

Would be a bonus to have Densmore in the squad.

Only prediction I can give, is that I'll be contributing to King George running out of ale again.

Following our 2-0 defeat at Kiddy saw us with 12 points from 11. By the time the regular season was abandoned we'd made up 7 points on King's Lynn and 9 on York and were due to play both. Boston started poorly as well, having only 16 from 11, the difference being that result at York Street. I'll argue Saturday's game is a shoot out between the two sides who showed form for the majority of the season, given a quarter of the games are played in the opening 6 weeks.

I don't want to build my hopes up too much but I have a sneaking feeling we might edge this.  Boston United in a big game at York Street usually have a man advantage in the form of an incredibly hostile home crowd-  not to say an incredibly forgiving local police force - but playing to silence will be surreal for them.  Whereas our professionalism and focus, combined with amazing team spirit, will be our 12th man.

Crying shame it is behind closed doors though - I can see it having been at full house - given it is their last game there-  and I reckon we would have taken as many as we took to Portsmouth - but we will never know.

I fancy us to win by the odd goal - 2 1 maybe - and I think Hulme will be working his butt off to get on the score sheet, and will score both if he gets one.

COME ON ALTY THIS IS THE BIG ONE - PROUD OF THE LADS WHATEVER THE OUTCOME

You have taken the words out of my mouth., although we were the better team as the match went on  I just think back to that final match at Tamworth in 2016-17, when it seemed hardly possible we would be back in the National League so soon.

Congrats to PP, NS and the lads. A year and a bit after Chorley away and a poor start to the season...we've deserved to win all 3 play off games and deservedly GOING UP 8)

Poor first half but as someone else has mentioned PP turned them round and much better second half, deserved the win. Fantastic stuff!

Thank God that we ditched Doughty and appointed Parkinson & Sorvel.

Revenge for the 1974 Watney Northern Premier League Cup Final (I was a heartbroken 10-year-old) and those two FA Trophy defeats at York Street in 1985 and 1999 respectively.

Now we just need Macc to be demoted...!

Brilliant. So proud of PP, NS & all the lads not only for the last 3 games but clearly the levels of professionalism they showed during lockdown to come back ready to attack the play offs.

Today’s game was not a classic truth be told-though the dry & bumpy pitch can’t have helped, it looked very poor. Boston shaded the first but we were much the better after the break & I felt it always likely that 1 goal for either side would be enough. Real shame for their GK that in the final & the last ever game at their historic ground to make an error like that, very much shades of the classic OG the bloke whose testimonial year it was scored for us when we won at Kettering in the North play offs in 2005. For us, Mullarkey, Thompson & Richman my standouts from today. The fact we haven’t missed Jones at all in the play offs says a lot about how well Mullarkey has done coming into that team.

Incredible end to a very weird 6 months & now two months (in theory) until it all starts again. Much work to do on and off the pitch before then mind....

Every single player has been magnificent and played their part throughout this playoff process.

My picks from today were Toby, Ringo and Josh Lundstram who really helped us move through the gears at times.

What an incredible team and with a few minor tweaks I have no doubt in my mind that we'll give the league a good go next year.

Come on you Robins.

Congratulation's to everyone at ALTY, fantastic finish to a strange but enjoyable season. Very pleased with outcome yet  feel almost cheated at missing real  involvement. looking forward to next season, can't wait to see how we fair, all being well

furious there was not even a token representation of supporters at york st today, we cant go on like this forever, nearly as many folks dying in accidents AS from this bug goin round - when we goin to get bCK TO NORMALTY? I read that 100,000 plus kids will starve globally from gvt lckdowns,  compared to three (so I heard) in the uk who have died from "the bug". we need to get it sorted

Well said that man.

Protect the vulnerable and let the rest get on with life.

With C19 laying peoples' spirits low, it is a magnificent boost for us Alty fans to have something as momentous as this to celebrate. Thank you all at Alty FC who have made this happen!

Coalville? What about Mickleover? I never felt worried today but glad we didn't have to go to penalties. Gutted for their goalie but looking forward to another season in the National League. We were better than Chorley last season so here's hoping.

Outstanding performance 2nd half.

Hard to single out individuals, but Malarkey and Richman stepped up and were superb.

Massive well done to everyone involved

A superb achievement, credit to everyone, management, players, back room staff, board, fans. The performances under massive pressure have been great.

Phil should get on the phone to NcNulty and persuade him to go part time. We’re going to have some tough moments next season and someone of his experience would be invaluable.

Thought McNulty played part time on Saturday! 😉

Marvellous stuff. Congratulations to the team and management.

Thank God that we ditched Doughty and appointed Parkinson & Sorvel.

Fantastic and great see cult praising the management. How times change😉😇

Ian,

I'm absolutely delighted to be able to praise the Alty management. Indeed, I was fortunate enough to bump into none other than Neil Sorvel himself outside the newsagent's near to the J Davidson Stadium earlier this afternoon and proceed to thank him in person for his invaluable contribution to the club's renaissance over the last three seasons, all of which culminated in yesterday's promotion.

My issue was always about the leadership at the helm of the club. Thankfully, a sea change has occurred at the J Davidson Stadium since the moribund wreck that existed at the end of the wretched 2016/17 relegation season and the club now looks progressive and professional both on and off the pitch.

Old wounds BUT I am puzzled by a process that can get it so horribly wrong three times in short succession then delivers a superb decision. Hey ho.

Where was I?

Oh yes.

WE ARE GOING UP SING WE ARE GOING UP ☝☝☝
