Title: John Edward's question
Post by: HashtagAlty on January 26, 2021, 10:37:48 PM
How does this compare to great conference sides of the past... I'm curious from some of our more *ahem* senior members.

It's not an easy question to answer. The late 70's/early 80's side remain my favourites, but the whole league was part-time in those days, so you could argue that the opposition they faced was inferior. But remember they drew at Spurs, and I'm not convinced that this squad quite have that in their locker - yet ! We're still a work in progress, and we have the wherewithal to keep growing.

It's a good question, and I find it very difficult to compare sides from different eras.
I think results show we have the best team since 1994-95, for sure, although I don't mean to disrespect some of the successful sides since then, such as the promotion winning sides of 1999 and 2005.
I can remember in my formative years in the late seventies more or less expecting to get a late goal in many matches, and I  start to get the same feeling now - bizarrely enough for a  part-time team in a mainly full-time league - even though the one missing link in the current squad is  a goalscoring centre forward, equivalent to Ken McKenna or John Rogers.

How great would it be to stick a 2005 Colin Little up front with Colclough / Kosylo / Mooney / Ceesay / Hancock playing balls into to his feet

A Little or a Reevesy would score bags of goals in this team.

It’s impossible to compare. The great team of the 70s/80s would have ended with 5 on the pitch under today’s rules, the current team wouldn’t last 10 minutes under 70s/80s rules.

The great 90/91 team went unbeaten for 28 league games and in Ken McKenna and John Brady (plus Mark Hughes as back up) had an incredible forward line, and that’s before we mention Paul Showler and Nicky Daws in midfield. This team for me is a top class centre forward away from looking to push for a place in the legendary Alty teams of the modern era. We’ve definitely not had a better managerial partnership than Parky and Sorvs since Kingy and Graham H were in their 1990s heyday though. We will obviously need to build on this though with a full and hopefully normal and uninterrupted season next year.

To my mind the 70s team was the best ever, they feared no one and won everything (apart from the FA cup) that we entered.
This team are a very good side and have some great players and we do not give up at all, they would certainly give the 70s team a run for their money(fancy watching that match)

I'm not sure they would, we dont overload the flanks in a 442 style anymore and there arent balls played through into the box as often.  We are designed to need a big holding attacker.  Perry and Rankine in their hay day would be better, we dont look in need of a poacher

Generally I think its too early to say.  We do look fantastic but if we were to go 3 or 4 games in a row without doing well and some of the spark went then we wouldnt be having this comparison.  If we carry on like this into april then fantastic

We were blessed with Jordan Hulme, who could shield a ball with his back to goal, and, even with two defenders on him, manage to turn and lay it off. That's a rare skill at our level, and that's why replacing him is such a problem.

I was thinking the same myself Colin or Damian.

This team is the best I've seen since the early 90's especially when you consider how may full time teams we play now. Part time with barely 4 hours training a week is pretty amazing.

Reeves' hold up and linking play was quite underrated. Spent lots of the game with his back to goal, himself. It is such a shame that we lost Hulme and I do wonder if he regrets it slightly given how things have played out.

I can only compare this side to what I've seen and for me they're playing the best football in my time, no question. The Conference side we had with Chris Senior, Greg Young, Tom Kearney et al was very good too, and if it wasn't broken up with players picked off, I think we would have kicked on.

I'm sure Parky would agree though, until this side wins an FA Trophy or finds a way out of The National League, they simply can't be placed ahead of the successful squads in the 70s and 80s. We're still missing a giant-killing, too.

Not usually one for having players back but if it became possible with Jordan, I would make an exception .Agree with the reasons   quoted  why  his style of play suited the team.
