Title: Today's Altrincham FC Trivia Question
Post by: TheCultOfIanTunnacliffe on February 18, 2021, 03:43:06 PM

Inspired by our recent ill-fated FA Trophy tie against Havant & Waterlooville....

From 1970 onwards, name seven teams whose name contains an ampersand against whom Alty have played a competitive fixture.

Bonus points if you can also identify two teams whose name contains an ampersand against whom Alty have played a pre-season friendly fixture during the same period.

The winner will receive a prize comprising a signed photograph of Alty's 2019/20 'player of the season': Peter Crook.

I'll give it a go! (?) where I'm completely guessing.

For competitive, could it be...

Hayes & Yeading United
Dagenham & Redbridge
Rushden & Diamonds
Gravesend & Northfleet
Hampton & Richmond Borough (?)
Tooting & Mitcham (?)
Walton & Hersham (?)

For PSFs, West Didsbury & Chorlton and Bacup & Rossendale Borough (?)

Four correct answers:

Gravesend & Northfleet;

Dagenham & Redbridge;

Rushden & Diamonds;

Hayes & Yeading.

Plus one of the two bonuses: West Didsbury & Chorlton.

Epsom & Ewell?
Leytonstone & Ilford?

Yes to Epsom & Ewell (FA Trophy 1982).

However, no to 'Leytonstone & Ilford', as their name was actually hyphenated when we played them in the FA Trophy back in 1981. There's punctuation pedantry for you.

Brian,

Not to my knowledge, I'm afraid.

Too much red wine...!

Wakefield & Emley

Well played, that man. 2002/03 Unibond League season.

That still leaves one team from a competitive fixture and one team from a pre-season friendly.

Pwllheli and District?

And the boy Howarth unleashes a tremendous Hampsonesque 30-yard piledriver into the top corner of the net!

Pwllheli & District: an ignominious 1-0 FA Trophy defeat at Moss Lane back on 5th December 1973.

Following the postponement of the original fixture on Saturday, 1st December, the rearranged tie was played on the ensuing Wednesday afternoon (unable to use floodlights owing to the three-day week and the associated power cuts).

SC**thorpe & Lindsey United. Not strictly correct as they dropped the middle bit in 1958.

Full marks for dredging that one up from the darkest recesses of your memory.

5th August 1989: Windsor & Eton 0  Altrincham 2.

I remember the Pwllheli game but a friendly at Windsor and Eton? Odd, how come we would even have considered such a distant PSF?

I didn't go, even though I remembered it, but I think it was a team bonding exercise for a weekend away. We have had similar long distance friendlies in Ireland and the Isle of Man.
