Oh what a season... this was one of my favourite matches of all time... what a win... 4-1 over our main title rivals and promotion to the Football Lge finally looked nailed on...

However, the dream died over the last five games... in a season where we were unbeaten in i think 28 games (then Conference record) we were top and had just beaten our nearest rivals... after such a great run i think we only needed 8pts from last 15pts (5games) only to blow up and gain just 2pts (or was it 5?) to miss out by about just 5pts & Barnet went up instead...

Probably more gutted than time we lost promotion by 1vote (in days before promotion) when two promised votes didn't materialise due to one 'apparently' being late or going wrong room & other falling asleep pissed somewhere...

Conspiracy theorists reckon we may have thrown it away in 1991 season due to various reasons, but may simply be down to congested run-in of games in last few weeks and players being knackered after long season... whatever your view, the above game against Barnet will live on as one of the great matches of all time... it was a privilege to be there...

Also think this match may have been first televised non-lge match if memory is correct... though memory fades the older we get... below is full game you tube link...

Remember that game well. Was sat in the stand with my eldest girl, who was 16 at the time, and a bloke from Barnet shouting out (in an exasperated cockney accent) "Carmonn Bownit, coo blimey, strike a light!).
We still use that comical quote in the family today. 😂😂😂😂

As an 18 year old living in Wycombe that wasn’t a happy ending. Trophy semi final we battered them at their place and lost. I consoled myself and responded to friends that they could have the trophy because we would win the league......

Also remember this game well, fantastic game and thoroughly deserved our victory.

Hadn't we just beaten Merthyr 9-2? Is it my imagination, or did the chant, "Are you Merthyr in disguise?" reverberate around Moss Lane?

I was there. Not sure on the actual gate that day but it was cracking.

It was certainly one of the iconic matches, which kicked off 15 minutes late to accommodate the crowd. It was announced as a then capacity 3000, although 4100 is certainly closer to the mark, as the police thought it would be better to allow people into the ground, where there was room, even if that went above the permitted capacity, rather than have 1000+ angry people outside.

I did hear the occasional person was locked out so Wayno was very lucky, or very charming, or something.

Think it was 1st non league match to be held by police for 15 minutes to get crowd in. Previews all over mainstream TV, Friday local sports reports ( Granada reports etc) as well as grandstand etc on saturday. Amazing day/ game, as for the rest 😒😬🤔🤫 The name Geoff Lloyd comes to mind!!!!!

Was it the last televised home league game?

Wasn't there a game vs Woking?

Yep, you're right... Jan 31st 2008 home to Woking was live on Setanta Sports TV (who went bust)... game at Moss Lane ended 2-2 with Alty goals from Colin Little & Ryan Shotton...

Also unlucky not to be on Setanta Sports more around that time as we were meant to play Northwich Vics at home on New Yrs Day 2009 but called off due to frozen pitch... plus if Burton had not been in a FA Trophy replay in Dec 2008 our home game would have been moved from 20th to 18th Dec against them for televising on Setanta... also think we were due to be shown live on TV (maybe BBC) for FA Cup replay in Nov 2008 (which we lost on pens) but was not screened due to Luton refusing to agree to move date for TV... all these cost Alty lot of TV lost revenue... maybe other games shown at home by Setanta but i only recall Woking going ahead...

Should we have played Crewe in an FA Cup tie on Sky ? only for it to be postponed because Neil Lennon was on international duty ?

Maybe my medication is wearing off, maybe ?

I am pretty sure I remember that game in 1995 being postponed because of international callups, although I am unsure if it was originally scheduled for TV or not.

It was scheduled for tv, it was called off due to Neil Lennon being on international duty.

Did we appear on the ill-fated Wire TV cable channel back in the 90's? I seem to recall a home match against Stalybridge, but then again I have a memory like a sieve.

Yes, there was a thread about it a few months ago - either on here or Facebook, can't recall which.

The Crewe game was actually called off for 3 players being on international duty: Neil Lennon with Northern Ireland, and Rob Edwards and Robbie Savage with Wales

That's brilliant - thanks. Some familiar faces in the ground (some sadly no longer with us) but that Andy Green stare really takes you back.

never knew at the time, as a narrow defeat at Barrow that ended our 28 game run seemed predictable,.. but the reason we didn't go up was a n other.

4501. But they had to pretend it was something else. Ecky said he knew every word of the commentary... The flash lad (Rowlo?) with his mobile phone... stood in corner between grass Bank and GR end, Tom Majinski (fellow Ambrosian and later star of HBU) controlled a wayward ball on his thigh - killed it dead, I think I can just about pick out the moment on the video - he was a class above me really... Never saw it again until Rowley made a dvd specially. I think Barnet spent 80,000 pounds on new players near the end of the season, including carter from runcorn - how much is that in today's money... Don't forget we played a strong team in the csc and started in the 1st qualifying round of the fa cup in those days - 100% we were knackered - probably the same this season! We had to pretend the last gate of the season (Boston?) was more than it really was so the figures added up. Those really were the days. Oh yes they were - they really were! My first season as well. No wonder I stuck it.

Robbie Savage? Wow, one of my favourite players, and i have no memory of it! Eat My Sports was probably my favourite - Angus Loughran, Alfreton Town (before they went big time), Ricky Harris - what more could you want! Wayno will tell you about it! :) Wayno, I remember the Barnsley game, you said you knew you were getting old because you couldn't be bothered going on the pitch as it was muddy. I suppose you don't get asked for your age any more... old chap :) Northwich away was good as well, and the bargain booze on the way back to the station.
