The expert summariser is a fella who goes to every game with his mate Dave - says he wrote in by email. So, any Alty fans want to write in for Saturday's match - would be good to hear a balanced commentary!

Mention it to Dennis, I think he'd be up for it. ;D

Just read on their forum that the entry price was reduced due to it being a rearranged game. Anyone know if it was reduced for the travelling support?

Like for like prices would have to be the same, they can't charge different amounts for home and away fans.

Goal difference could be quite important - we dont really want to get slaughtered here tonight. We need to balance the attacking with keeping the defence tight.
Title: Re: Tonights team
Post by: Toff Apple on February 26, 2008, 08:31:23 PM
also motivation is important who wants to travel back down on sat after conceeding 5 or 6, personally I would hold it tight for another 20 mins and then go at them in the last 25

Stafford 1 down at Histon
Title: Re: Tonights team
Post by: blackpoolalty on February 26, 2008, 08:32:29 PM
what a rediculous statement to have attacked them from the off !!! surely you would want to contain them and get into halftime at 0-0, we WILL get a chance, simple as. Nearly job done first half, we just need to take our chamce when we get it
Title: Re: Tonights team
Post by: im not really here on February 26, 2008, 08:32:42 PM
Surely playing attacking football away to Torquay would be suicidle. Fair play to the lads for defending so resolutely for 44 mins. I wouldnt go for it until 10 mins to go if we're still losing. We need to try and nick the odd point here and there away from home not lose 5-0 every game.
Title: Re: Tonights team
Post by: Toff Apple on February 26, 2008, 08:34:11 PM

Exactly, we nearly got a chance just before their goal. Agree with the other posts, keep it tight and try and nick an equalizer.
Title: Re: Tonights team
Post by: Butty on February 26, 2008, 08:35:26 PM
I agree with the idea of attacking from early on. We all know alty aren't fit enough to last the full 90, so why try and contain them for as long as possible only to concede a lot later on, when we are knackered? If we attack and maybe sneak the odd goal or two, we are covered when (if) we concede
Title: Re: Tonights team
Post by: oneedham on February 26, 2008, 08:36:21 PM
I would have started with two up front. Maybe not attack but I feel we invite pressure onto ourselfs by sitting so far back, we have been doing it so often this season especially in the first half. Our wingers are always stood on the toes of the full backs. I know that they are bound to be better than us but  I can only see us going down with that attitude. At least try it for one game, we give teams too much respect in the first half. If we concede another now that will be it !!!
Title: Re: Tonights team

I think the theory is very sound but the bottom line is we're not good enough to do it.

Always happens....minute to half time I start fantasizing about gutting it out for a gutsy point and we concede :(  Uphill battle all the way now but as SW said got to keep the heads up!  Come on Alty!
Title: Re: Tonights team
Post by: markecky on February 26, 2008, 08:38:04 PM
If we attack from the off they will soak it up, then pick us off with better quality players.

Torquay v Alty was always going to be men against boys.  Sorry if thats harsh but its true.

To attack them from the off would be niave in the extreme.
Title: Re: Tonights team
Post by: Alty365 on February 26, 2008, 08:38:52 PM
We were one down after 45 mins against Cambridge and were unlucky not to get at least a point from that game in the end. It can be done and I think we'll come out fighting second half
Title: Re: Tonights team
Post by: Dougals Dad on February 26, 2008, 08:39:34 PM
We have improved in many recent 2nd halves.
Title: Re: Tonights team

Title: Re: Tonights team
Post by: oneedham on February 26, 2008, 08:40:43 PM
I understand it is easy to say but it is goals that win games and now with have to score to at least get a point. Sorry to sound negative but we will go two down before we play attacking footy and it will be too late as normal. I hope the boys prove me wrong i really do, but I can not see us scoring in a million years with one up front and wingers that play as full backs !!!
Title: Re: Tonights team
Post by: markecky on February 26, 2008, 08:41:37 PM
We will get one chance in the 2nd half.

If it goes in they will be stunned and may not recover.

If it does not we will lose 3-0.

OK maybe people are right but they just battered us so something needs to change. The next goal is massive but i think they will get it and it will be another game wasted. I understand what people are saying, I maybe referring the idea of attacking footy to the games at home which we have sat back in until half time. I just feel we need to give attacking footy ago especially at home, unfortunately it would have been nice to see Logan given a go at home, but I don't want to start that debate again. Hopefully this new winger will have some flair !!! we have sucha defensive team !!!!

You start a game at 0-0, surely its better to keep the point as long as you can rather than blow it away within 5 mins because they counter attacked. Agree at home we should have more of 'a go' but away at Torquay no way

that could be the most crucial point of the season!!!

Not expected and full credit to the lads for hanging in there!!!! WELL DONE TO PLAYERS FANS AND STAFF THERE!!!

What a massive point to biuld on! Once upon a time this type of game was a dead cert loss and we'd all be looking at the next game! There's real belief in that dressing room and ive got to single out G Barrow, unless our transformation was coincidence once he arrived!! A real professional look and tactical awareness now along side GH and his knowledge of players and the league!  Perfect balance

Reply #106 - Today at 21:41   Worst result of the season so far for me. Some interesting decisions by Bucks - no Stevens, really not sure about Phillo on the right-wing. Why not play three up front against teams who are going to park the bus in front of the goal? Soften them up a bit like we did earlier in the season.

6 points from 6 an absolute necessity in the next two games!

Isn't this the highest we've been all season?

Yes, and we've never actually been bottom

You'll know in a few years.

Joking apart, when's the due date?

The business end of the table:

17 Rushden & D'monds 31 2 38
18 Halifax 30 -3 33
19 Altrincham 33 -24 28
20 Weymouth 30 -14 27

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

21 Farsley Celtic 31 -24 25
22 Stafford Rangers 31 -30 18
23 Northwich 31 -34 18
24 Droylsden 31 -47 13

You know a win against Halifax a week today could drag them into it even with their games in hand. They dont seem to be winning many.

I can just hear GH now: "We got  a draw tonight against a full time team. Our lads will be back at their full time jobs in the morning........."

I don't know about that.  My sister was fairly against it when she spent her 7th birthday being driven to Wembley from Huddersfield with me and my friend in the back of the car - the look on her face when she found out that 0-0 meant another half an hour!  And then a long trip back with grumpy family after we lost to Enfield!

Halifax will be better than expected but it's a game we are well capable of winning. That run of three home games in 8 days looks absolutely crucial now.

BBC report:

Torquay 1-1 Altrincham
Torquay stretched their unbeaten run in the Blue Square Premier to six games but were held by Altrincham.
The Gulls dominated the early stages and Altrincham goalkeeper Stuart Coburn had to be alert to deny Kaid Mohamed and Chris Zebroski.

But Zebroski soon put the home side ahead with a fine finish from outside the penalty area.

Torquay wasted more chances and paid when Warren Peyton levelled with a penalty after a foul on Joe O'Neill.

Don't panic - remember the siege in Doncaster back in 1999!

The game reminded me of Doncaster from about 20 minutes in last night.....we were talking about that on the coach  home!

The expert summariser is a fella who goes to every game with his mate Dave - says he wrote in by email. So, any Alty fans want to write in for Saturday's match - would be good to hear a balanced commentary!

Mention it to Dennis, I think he'd be up for it. ;D

I thought his behaviour was a bit Fan/Flynn like......punching the air & out of his seat when Zebroski scored & head in his hands when the ref pointed to the spot. ;)

Dennis....or David would be perfect for St. James's Park on Saturday :o

I thought the tactics deployed last night were excellent.Even if we had lost I wouldn't have been too downhearted because we had a clear game plan & the team really competed. As I saw it we did not at any time play a 4-3-3 formation but  4-1-4-1 throughout. The plan appeared to be to ensure that we stayed in the game in the early part of the second half, whilst pushing on from the midfield to support Tom Cahill. This worked to a degree as the early part of the second half was much more even than the first, but it was the introduction of Joe O'Neill that was the catalyst for us to really start giving Torquay something to think about.Joe won the vast majority of balls played up to him, both on the floor & in the air & as the game wore on he received increased support from Richard Battersby,Liam King,Robbie Lawton & Warren Peyton.....each of whom at different times started to press forward from the midfield....the 67th minute headed chance for Richard Battersby was a great example of this with Warren,Liam & Joe all involved in the build up.In the last ten minutes Ryan Shotton also got forward impressively & Chris Lane produced one great ball for Joe to race clear.Torquay are clearly a good side & do not concede much at home, but we made them look suspect defensively by supporting the lone striker quickly & purposefully from a number of sources.I think that maybe the reason that they did look shaky is that they found it difficult marking just one man up front with the cavalry coming from different & varied directions.

The back four with Chris Lane playing in the hole were superb throughout as of course was England's Number 1.

A tactical triumph for Graham Heathcote & Graham Barrow which I am sure has given Paul Tisdale plenty to ponder over the next three days.

I agree with Brian, it was clearly a 4-1-4-1 formation all night.

Fantastic resilient display and a well deserved point. Finally back home now, Torquay like most failing seaside towns does not have much to recommend it. Confident onto Exeter now.

Sounds like the Graham's got the tactics spot on, we'd have all bitten our own hands off for a point and we got one!

I just love dodging the sick with my kids round town on a Saturday.. obviously when i cant get to Alty :-0

not mambos, not even the hot butty shop.

most persistant quote of the night
'i didnt rate that hole in the wall did you? it didnt have any scrumpy, can you believe there is no scrumpy? why are we in wetherspoons there's no scrumpy? i cant believe there's no scrumpy can you?".
he did have a point though the club bar had a promotion on south african cider for gods sake? and weatherspoons did have some farmhouse cider but no bits init so it wasnt good enough for scrumpyman baldrick.

a great night and a great result sorry about the snoring/abuse roommates
