Title: If you could have any ex-player in the Alty team who would it be ?
Post by: gazwarrington on October 31, 2006, 02:48:51 PM
First I thought McKenna for goals and menacing factor, then I changed my mind to Kevin Ellison, as we are in desperate need of a winger  then I changed again to Kilcline ... Only kidding   :o

Suppose Kevin Ellision would be my choice. For his ability to beat a player with his speed and that powerful shot he has.

Thoughts .....

PS: Sir Jackie Swindells goals would also be nice I suppose.  ;D

Initial thoughts....

Peter Densmore: now there was a left full back!

Paul Cuddy: class centre half;

Jeff Johnson: sheer versatility - could play centre half, left midfield or centre forward;

John Davison: impeccable at left full back, left midfield or central midfield;

Paul Showler or Barry Howard: left wing;

Joe Pritchard: tremendous source of goals from a midfield player;

Ken McKenna: would be great to see him alongside Colin Little!

Joe Flaherty: the legend returns!

Ian Tunnacliffe: an absolute goal machine and a lethal predator in the penalty box....

For me, if we're talking about current players, it would be;

Kevin Ellison on the wing and Danny Adams at left back.

PS: I'd try to find a place for Paul 'Top Banana' Ellender too.

I would pick Jeff Johnson for his ability to play generally anywhere, a quality player.

Barry Howard would be great on the wing, and he scored a few goals. (Rotherham being the best?).

Ronnie Elliss upfront for his cheek.

Paul Cuddy in defence

Peter Eales in Goals.

Stuart Terry, Sharratt at his best, McKenna and Green (to stare the opposition to death) and Ronnie Ellis

I think it's great that you can get a good idea as to how old the posters are by who their favourite players are!

It shows we've had some fantastic players throughout the years.

PS: Apart from Jeff Johnson and Graham Barrow, my favourites would include Crackerjack Swindells and Derek 'Tank' Halliwell!
(What does THAT do for guesses at my age? :D)

I'd have Pete Densmore, Nicky Daws, Peter Conning and the legend that is Ronnie Ellis....but I suppose that, as a previous poster indicated, this just identifies my age range

I suspect that the real reason that you want Ronnie Ellis back is so that his (still) rather attractive wife would return to the Moss Lane main stand!!!

Mr Cult.

Your perspicacity astounds me. That could indeed be given as partial reason I'll grant you. However a further contributory factor is that i would quite like to gain access to the Dorian Gray esque portraits so obviously owned (and stored carefully in the respective attics of) by Mr & Mrs Ellis and Peter Conning who actually looks younger now than he did 20 years ago.

The major reason however, this being a Football Forum is the additional options that these players would offer

Its great to reflect on the teams that you grew up with - especially as its not always for their ability that you remember them with fondness !!! I remember vividly running parallel with Rowlands against Barnet (91?) to the corner flag to celebrate his goal, Andy Greens menacing stare, being told that Ken McKenna had once bitten someones ear off (shocking to a young lad !!!), Kingy and his chinese writing, Bradshaw and the Tottenham move etc etc

Thats what makes supporting Alty so ****** brilliant !!!!

Andy Green and Ken McKenna up front definitely - although they would probably play very few games together due to various suspensions  :D

Would also include Danny Adams - class :)

I agree that the players people pick identify their age group, so I thought I'd try and kick against that.  I'd also try and introduce some new names

Jackie Swindells from the 60's (of course)

Two of my heroes from the early 70's Alan Wolfe and Bobby Todd (never mentioned!)

Len Dickinson and Gerry Casey to add further weight to the midfield

From the 76/77 and beyond, it's got to be Jeff Johnson

From the rebuilt late seventies team, Mal Bailey and John Rogers

From the post APL champions era, Peter Densmore and Paul Cuddy

If we wanted a 'fast and tricky winger' (programme notes to describe who?) - we've got Ernie Peters (um, is ths right?), ian Morris, Barry Howard, Paul Showler, Stuart Terry, Kevin Ellison

Left back?  Got to be John Davison

Actually, all this proves is that every generation could legitimately pick 3 or 4 of the squad over any five season period and all of us would be perfectly justified in their selection, with wistful sighs and nostalgic remembrance of the (in my case) last 40 years of joy (and pain) that the mighty red and whites have given us.

And another thing, I didn't have much access to internet last week - and therefore couldn't contribute to the best Alty goal thread - but Mal Bailey at Runcorn in the trophy semi final has to be one of the most joyous!

No mention of GH.  He was playing slightly before my time so can't say if he was any good or not, but seemed to get a few games so he must've been ok?

Too young to see him myself, but would go for Swindells based on his record and speaking to people who were around then.

I believe Heathcote was a good player, but not one of the best in the Alty team of his generation so doesn't really come under consideration for this thread.  For those older than me how good was Carmody?  Of those i've seen i'd pick Ellison, the best i've seen and would be vey useful to Alty at the moment.

Charlie Bradshaw-he was world class before the talk of a move to Spurs turned his head-a target man AND a goalscorer, I'm sure fondly remembered by a few.

Carmody while a great servant to the club with a fantastic appearance record just didn't contribute enough goals for me.

How about keepers?

I still have an image of Jeff Wealands crouching on the edge of the Alty penalty box peering forward at another Alty attack, sometimes he seemd to be near the half way line.

And Stu Coburn has put in many years of great service for us (long may it continue).

Not Matt Dickens though.

Talking of keepers who can remember the mid 70's when we had two, Frankish routinely but a younger keeper....a student I think.....who was "brought home" for bigger games like cup ties, was he called Schofield?

Over to you Saughall I think?
Title: Re: If you could have any ex-player in the Alty team who would it be ?
Post by: ManagementGuru on November 01, 2006, 02:17:14 PM
There were two periods when we had two goalkeepers jostling for position...

Peter Frankish and Peter Schofield in 1972-74

and

Peter Eales and Tommy Cavanagh 1976-79?

And of course now Acton and Coburn!

And if I was to pick one keeper from the past, I'd go with John Connaughton until the defeat at Burnley which just knocked the stuffing out of him

I always thought Alex Stepney had great vision with his distribution. He was almost like an attacking option at times.

He was never the same after being virtually assassinated by that thug Forshaw.

On the subject of Keepers -

Does anyone remember Jerome John?
He was about 5ft 8in and I think made his debut on a freezing cold Tuesday night at Morecambe in a 7-0 drubbing.

Always remember being scared by Joe Paladino !!!!

Willie Mailey was the most loved keeper for me (despite him coming from Macc).  Only about 3' 6" but hard as nails.

Peter Frankish and Peter Schofield in 1972-74

Peter Frankish was the worst goalkeeper we have ever had at Altrincham apart from Bobby Irvine (and HE was an Irish International!)

I remember driving to Fleetwood for a midweek night match to watch him throw one in his own net! that bloke was unbelieveable.

a 'fast and tricky winger' (programme notes to describe who?) - we've got Ernie Peters (um, is ths right?)

Sorry I was late with your request, SW, but I think I can help out MG here, You are probably thinking of Frankie Peters our number 4 (wide midfield in todays parlance)in the Cheshire League champioship side.
I've still got the cutting from the MEN in the build up to the Wolves game where he's at work at his garage job and pretending to lift a car back axle like a set of weights.

PS: You didn't mean Ernie Taylor, our winger from a couple of years before that did you? Can't comment on him as I never saw him play.

Re my earlier post on Jerome John, I have tracked the great man down !!!! It would seem he was homesick !!!!

From Enfield Towns www:

Jerome John  (Goalkeeper)

New signing 2006-07 from Tonbridge Angels. Well known to ex-Enfield fans among the Town faithful having signed for the old club from Kingstonian not long before we left to form Enfield Town. Started his career with West Ham United, for whom he has also coached. Apart from a spell with Altrincham, he has always played for clubs in the London area. Won a Ryman League championship and the FA Trophy while with Kingstonian.

ps Anyone remember Kevin Hawkins? I recall he joined us and got a harsh reception from the Golf roaders !!!!!

What we wouldn't give for a Barry Howard type player right now.....oh the list is endless and most of them have already been mentioned.....tomorrow, remember yesterday......

Was a major signing for us but Brenden had to retire at the age of 29/30 if I recall correctly, not long after joining us.

I remember him as an excellent Stalybridge player as he never had a chance to do anything at Alty.

Indeed, a Stalyvegas legend.

I recall myself a cracking goal that started a comeback fron 0-2 down to 2-2 on a Tuesday night against Nuneaton in November 99. Shame, he MAY have altered the course of Alty history that season if he'd been fit.

'Big' Paul Cuddy was one of the best centre backs ever to wear an Altrincham shirt in my opinion but, as far as I remember, he was much less than 6 foot, and even slower than Mad dog - like Bobby Moore, it was his reading ofthe game and his positional sense which made him great.
He was a true Alty legend.

Paul Cuddy? Slow? Never! He would have been quick for any position, but was particularly so for a centre back. I seem to remember he always matched Steve Burr for pace.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree - I seem to remember his legs moving and his head leaning forward but him not actually catching anyone. The Trophy final versus Enfield was a case in point. He could get himself in the right positions but when the ball came over fast to the forwards, no matter how hard he tried (and he did) he just couldn't catch them.

Like I said though, he cerainly was one of my all time favourites. :)

i think if it wasn't for injury we'd all know who this guy was, he'd have been an all time moss lane legend. Strange how things happen and we'll never no, but burke really was a top class player

I also recall that Paul Cuddy, although not the biggest centre back we ever had was amongst the quickest I can recall particularly from that era. He was also very effective aerially due to his unerring ability to jump just illegally enough to nudge people off the ball whilst not really ever getting penalised for it somehow

I also thought he was quick and still think he was one of the best centrehalfs we have ever had
also an all round good egg who hated being called cuddy or cuds he always insisted on people calling him paul
doesnt he still live in Hale ?

if we are in need of a winger and the obvious ones are not available can we have john vernon back or maybe the one eyed Tony(? )Bannister

Isn't Morrey some relative of Rooney, sure i read that somewhere. Remember him totally skinning some Telford full back in a Trophy reply one night probably in about 74 or 75.
