Title: Same as the A, B, C, game but slightly different ...
Post by: (S)ALTY on January 08, 2010, 05:58:17 PM
The same principle as the A B C game but this time the next person has to name a players begining with the last letter of the previous surname ?

Starting again this time with Stan ALLEN..... next up a current or ex player begining with 'N'

Over to you chaps and chapesses ?

Only very briefly at the beginning of the 1998/99 season. He and Nigel Gleghorn were our coaches for the first 8 games or so but it didn't work out. There was some sort of bust up and both disappeared overnight, paving the way for us to start winning some games and eventually win the Unibond League title.

taxi Phil,

Well, I'll concur with your nomination of Justin Bowler, whose contribution during his time at Moss Lane was nil.

However, George Yardley did actually score two goals on his debut, as I recall.
Admittedly, he did little else after that.
Didn't he also play against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park in that 0-0 draw in the FA Cup back in 1973?

Alzheimer's strikes again Cult ! I'm thinking of the wrong ex-Tranmere striker.

The guy I have in mind had been playing in South Africa, and was signed "unseen" while on a boat coming home. When he appeared on the pitch he was carrying more timber than Magnet & Southern's, and had so little pace that Long John Silver's XI in the famous Python sketch would have been more effective. He was subbed at half time and never played again. Would have been early 60's ? Any other old f**t out there bail me out on this one ?

Of course, another classic ex-Tranmere signing was goalie Dick "Teflon" Johnson. I could never work out how he'd racked up 450 or so League appearances !

taxi Phil,

Could that former Tranmere Rovers striker that you have in mind be George Hudson, by any chance?

Dick Johnson was indeed pretty abysmal at Moss Lane.

Frankish ran Dick Johnson close for the runners-up spot in the "Worst Ever Alty Keeper" Competition, but the worst goalkeeper we ever had by some way was John Wood ! I could never escape the conclusion that he was really an outfield player who'd ended up between the sticks in an emergency, and had a spell cast over him condemning him to stay there for ever and be constantly abused by a public used to real keepers !

The worst keeper i remember at Moss Lane was Ben Williams who was on loan from Man Utd. He was absolutely woeful and somehow went on to have a career in league football! Think he's currently at Colchester.

He was pretty dire, but I wasn't including loan players in my calculations. In fairness to Williams, his subsequent career would indicate that he's much better than he showed at Moss Lane.

You could say that about a number of ex United 'keepers.

Lets hope we never sign Jim Leighton !
