Title: Where Did It All Go Wrong ?..........
Post by: (S)ALTY on April 01, 2010, 10:44:37 AM
according to the main website's 'Through the Years' link, Saturday's match marks the 101st anniversary of us beating at team called Newton Heath 6-0.  ;D

Whatever happened to them I wonder ?   ???

on a more personal level I also see it marks the 32nd anniversary of beating the mighty Great Harwood 2-0  :'(  :'(

Gloomy memories for me. I was at Ewen Fields to watch us get battered 5-1 in 67.
Other notable sources on here will probably have better memories than me about such things but I think that Hyde team was the one with the midget forawrd line that included Wilford (who later came to us) and our ex-reserve winger the original Johnny 'creepy' Crawley.

The only Newton Heath I can remember us playing was Newton Heath Loco who our Reserves used to play in the Manchester League in the 50's and early 60's. Other leading lights in that League included the wonderfully named Ball Haye Green who I THINK transmuted into Leek Town !

According to this site  - http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A1159067 (BBC admittedly so who knows...) :
"Newton Heath LYR, or 'The Heathens', was the name of Manchester United Football Club when it was first founded. The LYR stood for Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway and was added to distinguish this club from Newton Heath Loco (who were part of the Motive Power Division of the company)."

So looks like Newton Heath Loco have (or had) been around longer. The LYR team change their name to Man United in 1902 and were a league team I think so it wouldn't have been them that Alty played in either case.
