I thought Angus you played his role fairly well last night which was essentially being in CCC’s position but playing it defensively. Not an easy task

This is the downside to the way we play. When it's on we're absolutely flying, the football is quick, the passing direct and we're full of flair. Solihull, Eastleigh, Rochdale, Barnet were all like this and, even though we lost, the Chesterfield game was similar. Unfortunately when it isn't working, it really isn't. In the last few seasons exactly the same thing has happened. We suddenly lose the magic of it and I'm sure many of us have seen Saturday's performance before over the last 3 seasons. Frustrating, flat and unsure of ourselves. We seem completely incapable of creating anything, there's no way through, we're slow, we give the ball away and we begin to leak goals with no reply. You can tell it's happening because we start to play increasingly speculative long balls and through balls than nobody is getting near signalling that the team has lost faith and confidence in themselves to get the system working.

The question is how do we get out of this rut and get back into the groove of the Parkinson 4-2-3-1? Is it tiredness? We looked exhausted with 30 mins to go on Saturday. Is it confidence? As mentioned above we shrunk away from that yesterday. The players absolutely did not believe we could get back into it the body language said it all.

I think it might be a mix of the two and I think that there is a real element of us overplaying and overthinking it as well. The play is not natural at the moment, it's forced. By that I mean, for example, the flicks that are going nowhere. CCC was guilty of this on Sat and many others...overplaying and forced. The movement is static and we're too rigid in playing the system waiting and waiting in the form of of playing it around the back 4 until the "perfect" opportunity to set up an attack comes. Back and forth over and over again but the attack opportunity isn't coming so we play those long balls out of frustration and try to switch the play. The risk/reward factor increases and we inevitably lose out. It's a vicious cycle because when the team lose faith in the system it collapses and there's no Plan B, so we try to match the opposition and obviously we can't play what they've been playing all season as well as they can.

Now, I'll concede that the pitch is terrible so there's an element of going long to avoid that which is valid and I understand it. There's also an element of resting and mixing the team up to keep things fresh, which I understand as well but the problem runs deeper than that. Take Gould for instance. He hasn't suddenly become poor or performed terribly, it's a consequence of the way the team is playing. He was calm, assured and commanding against Eastleigh, Rochdale, Solihull etc but then against Aldershot and Hartlepool especially he didn't look like that at all. That's down to the confidence in the side as a whole, it's down to the pressure the back 4 is under and it's down to the frequency we're now giving the ball away and not valuing the possession like we had been previously. Mistakes then happen (Kosylo for the first goal against Hartlepool, giving it away carelessly)

In my opinion Phil and Neil need to strip everything back again and almost start from scratch. If we can get back to the fundamentals of the system and focus on outcome instead of the process then it might all switch back into place. Perhaps we need to start getting it into the final third at any cost and get into those phases of play near the by-line where we can hurt teams and get it cut back towards the penalty spot. Be slightly more direct and go through the middle to reach those positions if needed rather than the intricate build up play that proceeds it until we reach a level of flow and confidence where we can be more assured at doing that.

We're more than capable and to finish on a positive I've never seen us be so overwhelming at playing this way until this season. We have the players to do it and until this year I haven't seen us be so dominant in the National League either. It works, we just need to regain confidence and slip back into the flow of playing it effectively.

Little bit harsh on Angus I think. He got a goal, hit the bar and was going  close to capping off that brilliant run with a goal too and that’s when he’s hardly played any competitive football as well. We let ourselves down with the 2 easy mistakes with the goals tonight

Mooney was encouraging, Kossy did ok I thought as well. It could all be different on Saturday. Don’t forget it’s only been 10 days since that Rochdale performance where we could have scored 5-6. 2 bad games, yes but we’ve been dominant a lot of this season. There’s no reason why we won’t be again.

Let’s make no bones about it that was a terrible half of football tonight, more down to the fact we completely gifted it to them rather than them playing through us. For the first I think Gould was probably at fault and whilst he wasn’t great with the second I’d argue it was Kosylo’s fault for giving it away very cheaply in midfield to start that attack off.

We were absolutely cruising at first and it seemed as if Phil and Neil had played a blinder, we even came out at the beginning of the second half and did ok as well with Hartlepool looking just as poor as they had in the first 45. Then a few minutes of madness changed the whole course of the match completely.

I actually don’t think the management were wrong with the changes they made, we were playing better than we did Saturday and the front 4 looked like they needed the rest. Where I think we did go wrong was when after the second goal it seemed to go out of the window. Mooney was causing them real problems and was proving to be a great outlet for us tonight but was taken off and then we decided to match their shape as well which seemed to derail any threat we had entirely. Even at 2-1 down I thought we’d get back in it before the changes. After the changes it was like we slipped right back into the Aldershot match all over again. We never looked as if we were going to create anything , in fact it looked almost lazy the way we were playing at times.

I’d have brought Linney on for Angus (who should’ve killed the game with the chance from his brilliant run in the first half) and maybe Switched out Wilson too but it just all seemed to go wrong for us from there.

It’s unsettling but I think we’re all panicking a little bit here. Time to reset, go back to basics and go again. It almost feels like we’re overplaying the system, CCC looked like he was trying too hard at times when he came on  and we were generally a little bit passive in what we were doing.

We all knew we were going to lose more games (Barnet have lost 8 of their last 15) but for us it’s how we react to two tough away trips now. Maidenhead at home on Saturday is the perfect chance to get back on track and get playing again. This is still a fantastic season, we’re in a great position and as Phil always says let’s stick with them through this difficult period. We move on.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Crowds
« on: February 17, 2024, 12:23:44 PM »
Are we all delusional?? What crowds have we got over the past 10 years or beyond?Every club has an ultimate crowd potential. Why have we not got more crowds over the years? I fear we are being bamboozled. If we do not get promoted how many will we get next season? Not 2500 for sure even week..Mark my words. Nice ambition but  not realistic

Consistent attendances of 2000 plus was delusional thinking in the NPL season when we were regularly still getting crowds 500-600 and that was only a few years ago. We’ve also never been as successful as we are now (certainly in the last 25 years anyway)

What is this big obsession from Parky about wanting/needing crowds of over 2500? I understand the financial benefits but surely the increase in crowd numbers over recent years has been excellent. There must be a limit on what we can expect to get in on a match by match basis. I really hope we get more regular attendees and not just for big games etc. Every club has a core support and ours has not been this high for ages. The football deserves big crowds so lets hope and they stay around for years to come

What do you mean? Crowds are everything, especially at our level. He acknowledges the amazing rise in crowds but wants to push for more. We've got to keep pushing forward and I think that's what he's trying to get across, especially if we want to be a competitive football league club. This is already a special season, let's get as many people from around the town and area to see it. We might even retain some who become regular supporters.

Decent starting line up but good quality in my opinion. Good to see Burroughs in and will be interesting to see how Ollie Byrne gets on in his first game back too

Very strong statement from the club, and quite right if we're looking at a £5000 loss for nothing. Especially if Southend have been assuring us that there was no danger of it being off all week only to announce an inspection tomorrow morning. Not only is it unfair on the team and supporters but I'm sure there'll be a number of Southend fans put out by a potentially late postponement too.

I assume the squad will have travelled down tonight too so we probably will lose out now even if it is called off....judging from what I've been reading from Southend fans we'd be very lucky to be actually playing tomorrow.

Well that was a very encouraging performance against a really excellent side. Chesterfield are by far the best team in this league but we battled well even with Ross having to drop out so late on. I think it’s one of those where yes we have lost the match but the performance levels were still there and against any other side in the league we’d have probably picked something up tonight.

Not as important to the playoff push as Saturday might be, I think everyone will probably lose to them but we ran them close and were perhaps unlucky not to pick up a point.

I thought Gould actually did fine overall although I agree with others that Ross might have saved the first one. It’s always tricky for a keeper when they’re not playing every week anyway but to suddenly get thrown in so close to kick off adds an extra dimension to it all.  It does highlight how integral Ross has been to where we are this season, however.

In terms of subs, Linney had a brilliant game…just so dangerous on the ball and creative. His part for our equaliser was superb but I do think he was exhausted so no harm in bringing Angus on at that point who does have it in him. I thought Amaluzor looked a bit off it when he came on and probably didn’t quite have enough time to get into the game. I’m not sure if him not starting is tactical or that he’s carrying a knock?

Anyway, decent performance but Chesterfield are 12 points clear for a reason and found a way again like title winners tend to do.

That's true, I agree with that, however the results of the 4 games we have over the next 10 or so days collectively might have an impact on where we finish this year. We had enough to win the game yesterday without 4-5 starters but we didn't take our chances that's it. Put it this way, there wasn't one team in the top 7 playing in the trophy that didn't make changes yesterday. We were at an even bigger disadvantage in that we have a game on Tuesday night.

It's not about us now needing a result on Tuesday to justify not going full strength in the trophy, it's about keeping players fit and firing for 2 weeks where we have 5 games in quick succession.

It was not a near PP master class it was a fkn manager who picked the wrong team and dissed the competition,Kiddy, and also our fans who went.

We could have won that by half time , Kiddy were that poor, then you make the changes…
Absolutely fuming.

Had CCC put that pen away we’d have been talking about how brilliant it was to have rested legs and gone through to the next round. It was enough to get through but if you don’t take your chances when they’re gifted to you that can happen. Chesterfield rested their entire squad yesterday for our match Tuesday and we have 7-8 games this month. I think resting some players was always going to happen.

It was almost a Parky master class. Rest a couple and bring on the big guns near the end, almost played out perfectly but sometimes luck isn’t with you like last year sadly.

The rumours have started by the look of it. If there’s any truth to it then you couldn’t begrudge him a move to a club like that.
