Excellent season indeed. Certainly a few league places above my expectation at the start of the season, and itís definitely now there to build on for next season in what looks a weaker league already.

Letís hope Chorley go up next week. They might have looked a busted flush at times yesterday, as teams can in the POs after narrowly missing out on the league title, but the top 2 have looked a step up from everyone else over the course of the season, and so getting rid of both of them and no big sides dropping down would be a massive bonus.

Now isnít the time to talk about individual players, but if we can both strengthen and retain in the right areas over the summer, then there looks no reason we canít at least reduce the gap between ourselves and the teams challenging at the very top of the league next season.

It looked bad at the time, and so Iím surprised anyone thinks it wasnít a red card having had the luxury of being able to watch it again on a replay. If it was the other way round, Iíd have been beyond cross if that wasnít given as a straight red. And Iíve never seen anyone slip before when jumping in with both feet already off the ground.

It wasnít malicious, it was just a clumsy forwards tackle from a player desperate to win the ball back, which you might (just might) have got away with 10 years ago. But certainly not now.

Think he's 23 so eligible

From a quick google search heís 25 this year. However reliable that is, so Iíll take your word for it over that, and fair play to him in which case. Even if Iíd have given it Jones personally.

For those not on Twitter.

Goal of season - Hancock away at York

Young player - Johnston

Player of year - Hannigan

Players player - Hannigan

Hannigan had my vote, and itís richly deserved. But whatís this Ďyoung playerí award all about? Johnstonís in his mid 20s isnít he? Seems a bit harsh heís walked off with Jonesís young player award.

5  General Category / Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Playoffs mini league on: April 25, 2019, 05:14:29 PM
Form goes out the window for play-off games. There is not much to choose between the play off contenders. So anything can happen.

Wouldnít agree that ďform goes out the window for play off gamesĒ, Iíd say carrying momentum into the playoffs can be more important that where you end up finishing.

But donít too read much into a mini-league either. Things change so quickly at this level that whether Bradford beat Blyth back in September or not will have little relevance to the next few weeks.

Doesnít look fantastic on paper, but that midweek record could look much more favourable if not for two costly individual errors in last minute of the previous two midweek games, with Dens forgetting to stop running when he reached Andre Brown in the penalty box at Telford last week, and Thompson, wellÖ
So I wouldnít read too much into it.

For what itís worth, I still think weíll finish 3rd anyway.

7  General Category / Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Brackley Match Thread on: April 15, 2019, 08:57:26 PM
This cannot be understated. 3rd is vital.

Yeah don't get me wrong, Hancock isn't a sacrifice.

Agreed 3rd is vital.

Pretty confident thatís going to happen. Even a draw tomorrow (and itís more likely weíll win) would still leave us heavy favourites to finish 3rd.

Which will include a significant announcement regarding the  club sounds interesting

I wonder if it is to announce we are going full time!

Or maybe part full time

If I had to make a semi informed guess itís a contract extension for PP and Sorvs. Though I do believe the full time options are actively being considered.

Iíd be amazed if it was just that. Surely thatís not such surprising news it warrants the big build up and reveal?

I understand why people would be (rightly) pleased to hear the managers are staying around for another year, but Iíd consider signing up a young manager who is hitting all his objectives so far is just a normal part of running a football club, rather than a ďsignificant announcement concerning the clubĒ.
In fact, Iíd be more shocked to hear they werenít already signed to the longest possible contract we could get them to agree to.

I can picture us beating them on penalties at Edgeley Park  in the play off final.

I can see that sort of scenario turning very ugly.

I cant, their fans are a really friendly bunch by and large.

Is that why AFC Fylde players were attacked by County fans on Saturday who ran on the pitch after Fylde scored a last minute winner?!

I wasnt aware of that, but most clubs have a tiny minority of idiots, thankfully Alty dont have any  Cheesy
By and large County fans are very good.

Perhaps you had also forgotten what happened at what was arguably their last Ďbiggest gameí before Saturday, and their last game in the Conference? When a number of Stockport Ďfansí invaded the pitch at Kidderminster when they went 1 down, to attack both sets of players, and the ref had to take the players off the pitch for over half an hour.

Iíd take promotion out of regional football at all costs but achieving it via a dramatic win at Edgeley Park, and hoping they take it well, wouldnít be my first preference.

Nepotism? If you're referring to AJ, that's an unfair and completely wrong accusation, Cult. I liaised with Chris Hall over coverage, and he said he would like to film the kit being laid out in the home changing room and also interview the chairman. After doing all that, Chris said 'I don't suppose there'd be a player available, would there?' AJ happened to be on hand because of the community work he does, and he was good enough to step before the camera. There were no other players around. In much the same way, the subsequent interview with John Skelhorn was an afterthought by Chris. Nepotism never came into it.

Given the chairmanís excruciating performance earlier in the week on the Thats Manchester TV feature, itís was probably for the best that AJ just happened to be on hand and was willing to step in. And I donít think he did a bad job overall, but it was still a touch disappointing to hear one of the clan referring to us as a ďlittle clubĒ on the telly.

11  General Category / Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Latest replica shirt option on: February 07, 2019, 09:29:03 PM
Great initiative, in spite of the state of the shirt. And the widespread interest generated by the D&I and media teams is highly commendable (although a week later Iím still struggling to comprehend that anyone thought an iPhone photo of AJ wearing a shirt stood in the club office was appropriate for sending out to the national media - despite us having more photographers around the club than ball boys...).

Hopefully the considerable media interest over the next week or so in the run up to the game can be used for the benefit of the club, as well as the fantastic cause it represents, to highlight the shares available for outside investment to come in and take the football club forward. It would be a massive shame if we allowed the spotlight to pass without anyone highlighting the controlling share of the club that is supposedly still for sale, while so many people are listening.

🔘 The club is now able to sell the shares to a suitable investor, or investors, who share the Boardís ambitions.

I expect this is the reason why, while Salford City end up attracting an assortment of multi-millionaires and are on the brink of League Football, we get Mike Adams...

I find myself in total agreement with Matt again ! What's come over you m8 Cheesy ;

I tend to find that most people do come round eventually Ian.

Perhaps we should have an in-depth discussion on how best to fund any potential additions, just to keep us both on safe ground?  Smiley

14  General Category / Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Chorley match thread on: January 14, 2019, 01:38:43 PM
Over the winter period we've been shown how far off the top we are currently - and the good news is that it's nowhere near as far as we thought it would be at the start of the season.

A good goalkeeper doesn't just do the basics; he gets his defence out of jail once or twice a game. Thompson does neither. Much like proven goalscorers, good goalkeepers are tough to find - particularly mid season. I fully expect PP is monitoring the situation, but there's no point in getting any old keeper just for the sake of it. It's that type of recruitment policy that got us in trouble.

I actually thought we defended magnificently in the first half. We dealt witb everything they put into the box. Maybe it's a concentration thing, to a man we were dreadful second half. I thought Leather was fabulous marshalling their back line, I do miss him.

The players need to be encouraged to shoot on sight; we seemed to be doing this more often in the first half when their goalkeeper was struggling with the wet surface, and we obviously got our goal from it. When JJ was through in the second half, he wasn't in too dissimilar a position to Wilson when he scored their second. Guess what - he put his lace through it. Their goalkeeper didn't look much better than ours.

We definitely need some better options off the bench, however considering how little we've seen of two of pur best players last season (Poole and Harrison) we're not doing too bad. We badly missed Poole's ball retention yesterday, nobody does it even remotely as well as him, and that's the difference at this level.

I wasn't too impressed with shouts of 'murderer' at Meppen-Walters. The lad might deserve some stick, but I'd like to think we're better than that (I appreciate some will disagree).

Players returning from injury would undoubtedly strengthen the bench (which would definitely be a positive right now), but would they start? For me, Hancock is a more effective player than James Poole, and Harrison wouldnít get in the first eleven ahead of Hannigan or Jones. Fully agree that there is no point making signings for the sake of (thatís how Sang happens), but we do need players coming in who are better than the ones we currently have.

Owen Dale showed the levels that could be achieved by some of the other players, when we inject that extra bit of quality into the side that we donít already have. We gained more points in the 10 league games that he started than we have in the other 15 games that he hasnít started. Indeed, averaged out over the season, the points/game with OD in the starting line up would have got us to the lofty heights of 3rd place in last seasonís National League North!
However, the points/game return in the other matches this season without OD would have seen us avoid relegation by only 4 points in last yearís league table...

Thatís not to downplay the contribution of others this season, or suggest that players of that quality are easy to come by at this level (full credit to everyone involved in making that loan happen BTW), or even that they would need to be half as good as Owen Dale. Itís just that anyone coming into the side would need to be better than those they are replacing in order to make a significant difference over the 2nd half of the season, and I canít see either Poole or Harrison being able to make that sort of impact.

Hereís hoping for positive news this week regarding incoming signings/loan players, before two key home games in quick succession that could set the tone for how we kick on for the rest of the season.

15  General Category / Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Need a keeper asap on: January 12, 2019, 09:23:31 PM
I must admit I didnít think TT had one of his worse games today, aside from a spell when his kicked deserted him again during the 2nd half. I also think itís slightly unfair to single out their first goal, which was a wonderful move. (I did miss the 3rd due to a child needing the loo, and weíd gone by the 4th, so I didnít get to see all the goals we let in)

However, long before that, the Chorley fans around us in the main stand were already laughing at how poor they thought he was, and were telling me we needed a new keeper, so maybe Iíve become slightly immune to it.
