I think a lot of this is a bit daft (and possibly tongue in cheek) but he was never going to invest in us over Salford was he  Undecided

If it's the same lad, he's just scored a hat trick for their reserves

Assume this isn't happening now due to the other lad signing from Barrow.

Promotion season we had the second best defence in the league, 51 goals conceded, and the best attack, 95 goals scored.

I note that Chorley and Stockport have conceded far fewer than anyone else this season.

like finding a decent striker getting a top keeper is easiest done close season...we'd be lucky to find a club willing to release a stu Coburn at this stage of the season....
I have been critical that close season signings were poor....but we are left with our best 11 being practically last season's team ....a lot of that was down to PP giving last season's team the chance to prove themselves in this league....

I suspect and hope next close season the quality of new signings will be better and in the right areas...and PP may have to be hard and let go a few who will be unlucky to leave...

For me Jake Moult has been outstanding but having him in front of the back 4 leaves Richman to run a midfield single handedly.....against poor teams we do not need a covering midfielder and against better sides the midfield is overrun....I think this is a difficult situation which needs addressing....probably by having Williams or harrop with richman in front of jake and JJ roaming both wings.....even then we still have the issue of Jordan ploughing a lone furrow up front.....

As for the keeper, yes ideally we want the best keeper....a commanding presence who gets everything, commands the defence and distributes perfectly.....but I reiterate in the absence there is not much between Elliot and TT and I feel TT is being slated because we do not have anyone better....and when the defence defends properly he is a good shot stopper and distributes brilliantly 95% of the time and gets slated for the 5% Of balls that fly over JJs head....but I make his distribution rate similar to our other players...we accept JJs 95% blind alley runs and weak crosses and shots for the 5% brilliance....

Interesting that Chorley play a back three (although I felt their system struggled against us first half), hypothetically if Harrison reaches full form and fitness I was wondering whether such a system would be feasible for us.

In theory it would probably suit the two full backs we have, and if we have our two midfielders screening in front, it could give our front three a bit more attacking licence.

Call me mad, but as Jake goes into the twilight of his career he could drop into a back three also (I know he's done this in the past)?

As it happens, I think such a change would be too drastic at this stage - but I have to admit I gave it some thought after Saturday.

Not at all comparing standards but this Spurs and United game is emphasising the importance of a good keeper.

Perfectly acceptable to make the point - you find a competent one and your defence can relax.  Find one like Stu and they're the real difference.

I dunno, I'd rather focus on the football to be honest. And it's not like he didn't have the last laugh now, was it?

We all know what he is. He knows what he is. I'd rather not have sections of our own fanbase feel uncomfortable about it (regardless or not of your own individual view).

Over the winter period we've been shown how far off the top we are currently - and the good news is that it's nowhere near as far as we thought it would be at the start of the season.

A good goalkeeper doesn't just do the basics; he gets his defence out of jail once or twice a game. Thompson does neither. Much like proven goalscorers, good goalkeepers are tough to find - particularly mid season. I fully expect PP is monitoring the situation, but there's no point in getting any old keeper just for the sake of it. It's that type of recruitment policy that got us in trouble.

I actually thought we defended magnificently in the first half. We dealt witb everything they put into the box. Maybe it's a concentration thing, to a man we were dreadful second half. I thought Leather was fabulous marshalling their back line, I do miss him.

The players need to be encouraged to shoot on sight; we seemed to be doing this more often in the first half when their goalkeeper was struggling with the wet surface, and we obviously got our goal from it. When JJ was through in the second half, he wasn't in too dissimilar a position to Wilson when he scored their second. Guess what - he put his lace through it. Their goalkeeper didn't look much better than ours.

We definitely need some better options off the bench, however considering how little we've seen of two of pur best players last season (Poole and Harrison) we're not doing too bad. We badly missed Poole's ball retention yesterday, nobody does it even remotely as well as him, and that's the difference at this level.

I wasn't too impressed with shouts of 'murderer' at Meppen-Walters. The lad might deserve some stick, but I'd like to think we're better than that (I appreciate some will disagree).

They weren't a shambles in the first half; they were gone after the first goal.

Tells me the issue might be a managerial one rather than a personnel one.

Call me weird, but I'm driving there.

Same here. Anyone know what the parking's like?

...has signed for Telford on a permanent basis after an impressive loan spell. Apparently he's been instrumental to their recent good form, and has chipped in with a few goals too.

Funny old game, he looked bloody useless here.

Stockport have a backbone of captains running through their side; often promotion-winning ones at that.

It’s no surprise they’re well drilled.

Some of the hysterical posts on this thread are embarrassing.

Just like we weren't world beaters when we won 5 in a row, things aren't a disaster now our Christmas points return wasn't as good as expected.

To address a few points:
Recruitment is a bit of a lottery at this level; thankfully we (Phil) did it so well the season before, that the same team has been able to carry us this season. We've had a couple of great loanees.
One team (much like Warrington last season) we simply can't get past, and has also been responsible for both our cup exits. These things happen. They were the bookies' favourites for a reason.
We DO need a solid, authoritative goalkeeper much like Hinchcliffe at Stockport, who reminds me of Tom Heaton - someone calming that can win us 10pts a season.
Injuries and suspensions have hampered us at key moments in the season; and although I enjoy seeing the same XI every week, it would be good for Phil to trust his subs some more. We lost Peers, who is a great squad player at this level.

I'm not concerned yet - however the real acid test will come from this point onwards I suppose. Top 3 should be the dream now - in reality I think we'll be closer to 7th.
13  General Category / Altrincham FC First Team / Re: How many games Phil? on: December 27, 2018, 10:35:45 AM
I thought it was a good game between two good sides, you had a lot of possession but your lads seem to run out of patience after 4 or 5 passes and ended up shooting from 30 or 40 yards, we created the clearer chances and that told in the end, I'm convinced we'll both be up there at the end of the season.

Fair post.

Obviously doesn't come naturally to most fans but I'll definitely give credit to the opposition - County are a well organised outfit with an effective game plan. That's often enough to get out of this league and I wouldn't be surprised if you did.

Really not sure why Williams attracts all the criticism whilst Max doesn't.

Fan favourite he may be, but I'd be keen to see our respective points returns with and without him - doesn't take ownership of games and no surprise our run coincided with his omission too.

Darlo have a very useful striker on loan from Sunderland who scored two in his debut at Chorley

This lad, Andy Nelson, is very highly-rated and is expected to get a longer term loan to a football league club in January (contract due to expire end of season).

His two goals v Chorley were very similar lifts over the goalkeeper (they're on Youtube), will need to stop him getting into similar positions.
