It’s a very sad day for Altrincham fans and me personally and probably will be felt by the wider non league fraternity of an older age.

Our greatest, manager, inspiration, you name it has passed away. Most of us on here will be aware but for those younger fans who couldn’t be expected to know him this man was a collosus, a leader, a talisman, a Titan, you name it. And boy could he play.

To a young soft kid from a middle class village he was like something from another world or at very least from a comic book, I couldn’t even conceive that someone of his charisma existed.

Led us to our trophy wins, cup runs and two Alliance Premier League titles before managing us to our Birmingham victory and our FA Trophy win on my last visit to Wembley in 1986 (I said I’d only go back when Alty got there…)

And his impact on the town when he came back as manager. That side he put together in the 1990/91 season was simply the greatest team I ever saw, you can keep all the rest.

In essence, he’s hooked me into our club and shaped my life in that regard. Moreover he gave myself and my father times and a bond that I don’t think we could have had in another way.

None of this even gets close to the impact he had on Alty, And as said elsewhere, I haven’t even mentioned him saving them club from extinction in 1995 and his later donation of his shares providing the springboard for us to move forward.

Rest in Peace King John, this is a tough day for us Robins and has hit me harder than I imagined, a chunk of my childhood and life has changed tonight.

Taking personal feelings out of it 10 goals in 33 isn't that bad a ratio is it?

Firstly, it's ten from nearer fifty if you count sub appearances.
Secondly, how many were tap ins?
Thirdly, how many glaring misses has he had?
Fourthly, chances to goals scored ratio probably 6 or 7 to 1 when it needs to be, at the outside, 3 or 4 to 1.

As has been said elsewhere, not NL quality sadly however nice a lad and however hard he tried.

Couldn’t care less how many were tap ins!!

It’s not quite worked out but whether it’s a lockdown/bcd thing or not I don’t know but Marcus Dinanga is comfortably better than at least half a dozen of the strikers who preceded him in the season before.

To talk of him as on a par with the all time great Alty duffers is really odd to be honest?
Not odd at all. He couldn't do the basic things required by a footballer. Never tackled anyone, never beat anyone, never won a header (it's debatable if he ever actually jumped for one), and couldn't hit a barn door.
He's right up.there with the worst.

If I gave you a list of the dozen or so strikers we had the season before he signed, where would you put him?

In the equivalent games last season, we took 16 points from our remaining league games (with the addition of an extra game vs York). That involves swapping Lynn at Home for Gateshead, and Dover away for Dorking - both of those are now much harder fixtures. This site predicts the league table using some unknown model, and has us finishing 19th, 2 points clear of relegation: https://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/national-league/league-table/predicted

Thought we were really good yesterday, given all the turnover, and really liked Cashman in particular. But we need these arrivals to get match fit and gel, quickly. We didn't win any of the next 7 last season, and if that happens again this year we'll be sucked right into it.

That’s interesting in that a lot of predicted tables just tend to be done roughly on a current points per game basis so no one moves very much.

But I think that could be more realistic, I hope we don’t leave it so tight though!!

Dinanga gone

SOLD to Gateshead!
If they weren't knocking favourites for the drop before then they must be absolutely nailed on now!

Taken 11 points from their last 5 games…

I can only assume that the club feel they have enough points on the board to stay up and will spend big in the summer. If so, it's a gamble which may prove disastrous. I'm very worried.

It may be the case that we have enough of a cushion points wise to limp home and stay up. However, I can tell you exactly what happens to teams that do that the following season! They really f**king struggle. It’s a very dangerous thing to be complacent about.

It all does seem rather strange. I’m aware that sounding off about transfers is rather akin to the club saying hey look everybody we got x amount for Ryan Colclough and we’re going to spend it so raise your prices.

However, we are (again), 3 or 4 players short numbers wise, never mind quality. Last time I can remember the situation was this stark in that regards was the season we were relegated with Lee Sinnott.

Coincidentally we’ve got a spell of 5 home games out of 6 similar to that season too.

There must be moves afoot surely?

There is certainly no hatred....he trys his best in my opinion and that 'best' proves not to be good enough at our level during 4 matches out of five.
It is not his fault he is selected. The club has failed miserably again to recruit a Conference  National level number 9. He and Hulme are our best sub-standard options at the moment.

To point out also that both Hulme and Dinanga would be considered to be top class in the division below. It is all about levels and we seem to have gambled on players stepping up and in this case it has not worked as well as hoped

Mick, I’d have to question whether Hulme in particular or Dinanga would be considered top class in the level below. Though you could give credence to Dinanga’s good spell at Dartford. I just think we may be assuming they’re better than they are.

I do still think there are players in them to be fair but the fact is, we have lost two players in Colclough and Newby (who was filling an empty gap) who simply must be replaced.

It’s a big step but we may need to spend money. We are simply operating at 82% of potential from November. That’s not good enough.

I agree re. Dinanga but the fact is (and it is a fact) he has scored more goals than Jordan.

If only he scored more often than once in every 5 or 6 genuine opportunities he's presented with. He's a total waste of space at this level.

I don't know, I think the jury's still out on that. He's not John Brady maybe (or even Dickie "90 minutes" Landon"), but I did think he was getting into his stride a bit earlier this season before the loan signings restricted his game time. Alan Shearer often berates strikers for not taking a gamble to get on the end of crosses, and I agree it's a skill getting in those positions.

I think you might have got confused here Hugh, or I’m misreading your post, but if you think John Brady was a waste of space at conference level then I can’t help you. His 90/91 season is on a par with the best strikers in our history.

The only defence I can present for Mr. Cooper Your Honour is that his Alty watching may have started in the 91/92 season when Mr Brady’s morale and commitment had dipped somewhat before his November move to Barrow.

The worst one I ever saw was that (very) old ex Welsh 'international'. Can't remember his name (perhaps someone else on here with a better memory can help) but it must be at least 20 to 30 years ago.

Paul Williams. Ex Stockport. Cost them £250k once.

Abysmal. I don’t know what the problem was but it actually hurt watching him he was that bad. He was tall but couldn’t win a header, he was big but got bullied by defenders.

And those were his strengths! He wasn’t quick or mobile, couldn’t play and never scored.

Don’t think he won a header despite being 6ft 4in. Baffling.

Thanks for the update John .  After missing a full season , having Kossy back will be like a new signing.

I’m absolutely on board with him waiting until next season. He’s too good a player to rush back.

I’d rather have a fully fit Kosylo in August than an unfit one in April, far too serious an injury to take chances with.

would be nice to know if the possibility of Ryan NOT playing tonight was even discussed. Maybe it's something you can stipulate on loan deal but not a transfer, but as previously mentioned maybe the date of the transfer could have been arranged for tomorrow.

It can certainly be discussed, but it would be unusual. Chesterfield have paid good money to us for the privilege of being able to use him without restriction.

Fair play to the board if they've managed it - we know they do drive a hard bargain judging by other club's comments.

We’ll have to agree to disagree in general, many clubs stipulate that a player can’t play against them (in the short term). Whether the release clause being met, precludes us (legally or morally) pushing for that I guess is another question as Flynny adds.

But certainly we were doing Chesterfield a favour selling them Colclough as they were giving us money. I don’t consider it unreasonable that we’d have stuck to our guns that he shouldn’t play. It’ll certainly be a bitter pill to swallow should he play tonight while we have Kaja lumbering about because Gyasi is blocked from playing.

We just don’t seem to be strong in any area, either in regards to our own contracted players or the terms of deals attached to loan players. I think that is now extending beyond a mere period of transition to full time football and we need to look at the inner strength of the club and where we are at.

Had to be the case that Ryan's debut would be against us, didn't it.

Very much seeing this one as a 'free hit', if we can get something out of the game, that would be amazing.

Well, no it didn’t. We should’ve had the bollocks to insist that he didn’t play against us and if they didn’t agree we could have just been tardy about the admin and transferred him over on Jan 31st.

Correct

Not particularly conducive to building healthy relationships with our fellow clubs though, is it.

It's one game in the grand scheme of things.

What the actual f**k are you on about? Building relationships with other clubs? It’s completely immaterial.

Have you noticed that Chesterfield have put a clause in so that Michael Gyasi cannot play against them tonight? Like with Stockport, that’s a one sided relationship we can do without.

Why is everyone as soft as sh*te?

Although that said, no point wasting too much time on this until we see if Colclough actually lines up against us tonight…

With regards to Goodson, it should also be noted that

Alty reserve the right to recall Zak after 28 days

I find it hard to believe that we won’t discuss our needs with Boston in this regard and they wouldn’t not be taken aback if we recalled him in a months time.

« on: January 20, 2023, 03:56:36 PM »
Didn’t we recently announce that we were keeping him for another month?

I’m guessing we have done him and Stockport a favour to release him back early. Wouldn’t surprise me if we see some immediate other deals with Stockport! Good that we have a relationship with a team that are constantly looking to buy better players and we can utilise some of their fringe proven players at league level…. Next please.

I’m not sure what’s good about this relationship with Stockport. They just recall Newby back on a whim and sell him to make themselves money and now the same with Jennings.

We’re basically their bitch and get 6 weeks of help and then are totally destabilised.

Not a relationship I want thanks.

I’d prefer an actual transfer strategy befitting a professional football club thanks.
