Well the attendance is excellent

OMG yeah Nicky how could i forget him .

How could I forget Clee. Maybe push Showler out and into 3rd place.

You’re all talking out of your arse.

Never saw Barry Howard’s so can’t comment and happy to accept he was probably top one but in my lifetime it’s Paul Showler. And then the rest.

😀

I'm impressed with everyone's optimism here but I'm struggling to find many positives with losing one of the most exciting players I've ever seen here. Especially at a point when the team was racing up the table.

Couldn’t have put it better myself.

We must have irons in the fire here, surely to God?

Won't he be cup tied in the FA Trophy? Not sure if Chesterfield are still in it. What if Chesterfield don't make the playoffs. Don't think we will either if we let him go, unless we replace him but I imagine there is no decent dribbler of similar standard. Wish we could find another Paul Showler!!

They are out of the Trophy. Lost to Coalville.

I am not worried about not making the play-offs if we lose Ryan......more concerned about looking behind us without our best player

We have very specific examples of why that isn't likely to be the case - and indeed is the very model we're working to.

Firstly, he's not going to retire with us - maybe I see things differently to others, but I'd rather we banked a fee if he's told us he's not signing on next year (which is unlikely in the extreme). As long as we have Lundstram and Marriott in midfield, there's no way we'll be sucked into danger, whether we have Ryan or not.

Secondly, track record:

Sold Johnston - got stronger
Sold Hulme - got stronger
Sold Senior - got stronger

Might seem a bit ridiculously glass half full, but I'm excited to see what we can do with any proceeds of any hypothetical sale.

I’m not sure about Hulme as that was an odd season, other than to say we never replaced him.

We haven’t been remotely stronger since Senior left. It’s taken 12 months to sign a replacement left back for him!

He visited our little corner of the world too. The Brazil squad in 1966 stayed in the Lymm Hote and I believe, at least I was told so by Mr. Coleman, that they also trained a few times at Altrincham Boys Grammar School.

I don't often disagree with Ballers, but Dinanga has never convinced me, and I think we still need to source a genuinely threatening no.9

Sorry, yeh I’m not overly down on Dinanga and I’m not suggesting he’d be my first choice either. I’m just saying if we’re at the stage of ‘persevering’ with him, Jordan or Connor rather than them clearly being the man then really we should go with the younger player (who has room for improvement). And that’s from someone who generally walks around saying “sign some adults”.

For those sniping at Jennings, give your head a wobble.

People have slagged Dinanga off since we first signed him.

Hulme, as commented, isn't doing what we expected

Jennings has been more than decent. Any player is entitled to a sub optimal game

You did describe Baines as a terrible signing and it is very embarrassing that you think Cooper is better than him. Baines is a defender above.

Jennings is wayyyy past his best. Hulme or Dinanga are better options. Newby made Jennings look better than he is,  due to being in those positions. Jennings is about flick on's, without two capable wide players he is ineffective, like today.

Baines made a terrible start. I don’t think that would be unfair, although he was being moved about and has definitely improved with a run of games in his best possession (and with an actual goalkeeper behind him) but even so I wouldn’t say he was a terrible signing because his age, profile and experience was the target level we should be looking at.

With that in mind, when decisions get made about Jennings eventually, unless he’s really obviously making a difference we might have to accept the fact that Dinanga is 6(?) years younger than both him and Hulme and the striker we have to work with going forward?

But ultimately how long can we not retain players and spend time recruiting and training replacements for them? We wasted two months of this season because we lost Mooney and Ferguson (and Marriott and Kosylo really).

For what it's worth, I'd still be looking to dip into the market for someone else if we have the capacity to do so.

Well, this is the thing isn’t it. At some point we’re going to have to take the big hard step of spending some actual money on a player. And for me it should be on someone we know to work, ie Newby, rather than the false economy of a gamble on a player we haven’t seen do well for us.

We were sort of playing catch up though from the previous year. The botched recruitment led us to bringing in any loaned we could. We eventually got Perritt, Cooper, E Jones (and Ferguson) in but that meant they all left in the summer and we had to start again.

Retention is as important as recruitment. It looks like a couple of players are now up to speed but we can’t afford for them to leave and restart the process again.

Weren't Unicorn (or their youth team) quite good at one time, along with Hale Barns United? I remember I used to frequently read about one or two lads from my school in SAM who played for HBU.

Not sure I ever played against Unicorn. I remember getting thrashed by Hale Barns United, as well as Flixton and Stretford Vics...

Would have been late 80s.

I played for Hale Barns at that time and Flixton and particularly Stretford Vics were very good sides.

Charles Heathcote played for Stretford Vics I remember

And here’s a clip you might have seen from the 84/85 season. I’ve seen most of these but don’t remember this one.

Interesting for the younger lads* for the clips of the ground (and Alty town centre).

12,843 vs. Solihull Moors, according to Football Web Pages. Lincoln City were the first team to get a really big Conference crowd (around 10,000 in 1989 or 1990). This though is in a different league, not far below the highest FL2 crowds of recent years.

This mention of Lincoln crowds in that season makes me wonder if they are also the answer to the question of if we had played in front of 10,000 in the conference before Wrexham. We lost 0-5 there  when they were on a bit of a roll.

Anyhow, here’s a brief clip of our 0-0 draw in the home game against them that season.

There were a number of games due to the ground closures where it’s not unrealistic conjecture to suggest it lead to 800 less people in the ground. Over 8 or 9 games that’s quite a whack.

Much better second half , would like to keep Newby if possible .Don't think Jennings is a number 9 as in hold the ball up and keep the centre backs occupied but he played his part in the second goal.

Played a nice part in what should’ve been an equaliser just before half time
