Altrincham FC First Team / Good enough
« on: April 29, 2023, 08:42:17 PM »
It might not feel it now, but only because we lost a Cup final and a Trophy semi. Whilst there is much that could be improved, there is also much to be positive about:

We got more points than last season (admittedly only because of the now defunct Macc Town);
We stayed up by 8 points;
We got the (joint) most points we've ever had in a 46 game season;
We reached a Trophy semi for the first time in 32 years, only missing out on a Wembley return with FC Halifax's last kick of the game;
We reached a first CSC cup final for 12 years;
We ended the season with a 4 game unbeaten run (in normal time);
We coped reasonably well with the switch to FT football.

If you'd offered me 17th after the Aldershot Town home game, I'd have snapped your hand off. I'd have settled for 60 points all day before the start of the season, and we were only four points short (probably partly because of the Welsh FA). With the money from the Trophy run, Seedrs and transfers (plus I suppose a little from the CSC), we should be well placed to improve again next season. If it is 71 points for the play offs again, we shouldn't be too far away.

As long as we stay in this league, it's fine by me.
As you say part time in this league is a recipe for relegation.
We've had a real wake up call but we're still here. I think we all got a bit carried away and promotion is probably quite a few years away. I can live with that. I've waited almost sixty years (and we came close when Rochdale pipped us) so I'm happy if we can stabilise and steadily improve our chances year on year from now on.
I just can't cope with another relegation.

Too right. They should have kept the third division North for longer - quite telling that they kept voting out Northern clubs after 1958 and electing Southern/Midland clubs (admittedtly they elected Wigan (eventually) but realistically they should have got in years before). There should have been three down from  div. 3n (and  3 more from 3s) with the winners of the leading leagues outside the league promoted automatically  - which in 1966 would have been Altrincham! If the FL could be trusted to let in four teams, I might suggest that step one should be semi-national, though admittedly step 2 is much stronger now than when there were three leagues below the Conference . Of course this could be largely due to play-offs

4-1 on penalties? I must say I wouldn't mind a pound pie!

That reminds me:

She wore, she wore, she wore a scarlet ribbon
She wore it on a - Thursday in the merry month of - April
And when I asked her why she wore that ribbon
She said it's for the Alty and we're going to - Moss Lane!
Moooss Lane, Moooss Lane,
We're the famous Salty Alty and I'd say it's more than likely that we're going to Moss Lane

Let's all do the Congle, let's all do the Congle, a naa naa naa, a naa naa naa... ;)

The only big gates in recent years have been for County last season, and for Crewe's derby with Nantwich. I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect that talk of 1,500 plus may be a little optimistic.

Just a thought, should the match go to penalties, I would definitely want Goodson and Linney still on - and therefore maybe not starting. And in the circumstances, I would absolutely prioritise this over Aldershot Town, let's have a grand finale to the season!

Just my opinion, but I'd take people like Steve Murray over the current lot of "professional" stewards any day.

I must admit that some of the OTT stadium announcers we get at away games can be irritating, and I would hope that we can remain a club with a volunteer element - just look at the stewarding!

Before Maunders left, we didn't really have much of that sort of thing. Whilst his departure was a shock, it was a time of tremendous spirit and togetherness that saw many people volunteering for different things (and I know that Ecky, for example, wouldn't have seen himself in the various roles he later undertook before that time). Yes, we want to move the club forward, but hopefully we can retain as much as possible of what we love about the club and non-league (and including the connection between staff/players and fans).

Worth noting also that our lowest league crowd this season was 1,147. That must be our best for a very long time, if not ever.

And indeed in the last match - they're away at King's Lynn!  It would be a tremendous achievement for them just to make the play-offs. If not them, I would settle for Buxton.

According to Football Web Pages. They would I think be slightly higher if you count Cup and FAT games. Once again attendances were down due to restricted capacity (for Wrexham and FC Halifax). I recall that ML was by no means completely packed for the Wrexham league game, also the corner of the pop side is still closed, hopefully this can be addressed for next season. Overall, very encouraging attendances once again, hopefully we will get even more next season if we challenge for the play-offs, and the relegation of Rochdale and probably Hartlepool (and, dare I say it, the possible promotion of Chester "City") will make up at least somewhat for the loss of the promoted teams.

I might add that I for one will never complain of the large numbers of young people at games in recent times, behaving as young people do. I would be more worried if there were only a few young people. Always remember that they represent the future of the club. And that there are other places to stand.

Altrincham FC First Team / Curzon v Fylde Tuesday anyone?
« on: April 22, 2023, 06:47:17 PM »
A win for Curzon would see them up to 6th (or 5th with 3-0 or better), whilst a win for Fylde would put them in a strong position at the top and leave Curzon requiring snookers. Naturally I'll be rooting for Curzon, though admittedly Fylde would be more convenient than King's Lynn (unless you're planning to visit Norfolk Like me).

Will this be the first time Altrincham have played in a cup final (ie excluding play-offs) at ML? I always thought the CSC was supposed to be played at a neutral venue. I repeat, the lack of accountability from the "blazers" (which caused so much trouble in the 1980s) needs to end.

By the way, why were Newport and Maidstone allowed to have their old names?

Accrington Stanley FC were formed in 1891 and went bust in 1962.  A team with a similar name, Accrington Stanley (1968) FC, emerged in, well, 1968 and this was the name they were using when we knocked them out of the FAC 4QR in 1974/75 (the Everton Season).  They quietly lost the '1968' moniker sometime later on.  Anyone else remember the milk advert?
And Gary Wright's version of it - and travelling there on the East Lancashire Railway and having a jolly long walk at the end (and a similar story at Whitby)! Tose were the days.

Gerry Quinn his manager did remark that Clive Freeman's goal was indeed a superb one, but he also remarked that he thought one he scored away at Slough Town was even better than that one. Bring back anyone's memories? Sadly, I was not there to witness it but some of you others may have done.

Clive Freeman remarked on the goal that he was knackered by the wet heavy pitch they played on that evening. He said, "My legs were really dragging towards the end of the game, when Charlie played a pass towards me. In that moment I thought should I run towards the box with it, but the heavy pitch had taken it's toll so I just hit the bloody thing as hard as I could."

Personally, my mind's eye still sees the water shaken off the crossbar, when the ball hit the underside on it's way in. I can still see it even now.

Probably the match I'm most gutted to have missed since I started watching Alty. I was already committed to go to a cheese and wine evening at school and was promised that we would probablt losee anyway! At least that one was videoed!

Altrincham FC First Team / Rochdale relegated to the non-league!!!
« on: April 22, 2023, 05:09:53 PM »
I would like to welcome them to the wonderful world of non-league football, and congratulate them on being the last of the really rubbish teams elected to the third division North to be relegated out of the league, and on their extra 43 stolen years of league football. I wish them many happy years - in the National League North.
