We should pester Trafford Council to name this new road in honour of an Altrincham FC legend.

So, how about:

Jackie Swindells Close;

Clive Freeman Drive;

Ian Tunnacliffe Towers;

Barry Howard Avenue;

Ged Kielty Square;

Andy Scott Gardens;

Dennis Birch Crescent?

Any other nominations?

Andy Newell was a keeper who played six games for Alty towards the end of the 1992/93 season, when Gerry Quinn was the manager.

Can anyone recall/confirm that he was the brother of former Blackburn Rovers forward and Luton Town manager, Mike Newell?

Or am I totally mistaken?!

Altrincham FC First Team / 1978 team v 1991 team
« on: July 17, 2007, 04:28:02 PM »
Ballers,

On another thread, you asked me for my reflections on this comparison of two fine Alty sides, so, here goes...

My judgment is based on the following line-ups:

1978
Eales, Allan, Crossley, Bailey, Owens, King, Morris, Heathcote, Johnson, Rogers, Davison. Sub: Flaherty.

1991
Wealands, Reid, Wiggins, Rowlands, Miller, Anderson, Shaw, Daws, Brady, McKenna, Showler. Sub: Hughes.

Any Robins supporter who was fortunate enough to witness the 1990/91 season will have some marvellous memories of a team that played some of the best football I have ever seen from an Alty side.
Alas, one season together was all we got.....and, unlike their 1978 counterparts, they did not win anything.

That 1978 team formed the nucleus of the great Alty side that went on to give us five seasons of tremendous memories, FA Cup runs and a few trophies along the way.

If pressed to pick a team from both those squads, I would do a bit of tactical reshuffling (i.e. move Davison back to left full back from midfield and relocate Jeff Johnson in midfield) and nominate the following line-up:

Wealands, Allan, Davison, Bailey, Owens, King, Heathcote, Johnson, McKenna, Rogers, Showler. Sub: Anderson.

Any thoughts?

Altrincham FC First Team / Your favourite 90th minute Alty goals.....
« on: July 12, 2007, 03:38:39 PM »
As it's relatively quiet on here today, how about reminiscing about some of the most memorable and enjoyable 90th minute goals scored by Alty over the years?

Here are a few selections:

(1) Altrincham...4  Southport...3
FA Cup 1st Round
25th November 1978

One of the best cup ties I have ever seen at Moss Lane.
Southport score to level the match at 3-3 with time running out.....only for Alty to regain the lead with only seconds left on the clock courtesy of a Jeff Johnson header from a Graham Heathcote free kick.
Onwards to Tottenham (and Ardiles & Villa) via Droylsden!

(2) Altrincham...3  Southport...2
FA Cup 1st Round
12th November 1994

Paul France pops up with a priceless last minute far post header to clinch the victory.
Onwards to Tottenham (and Klinsmann & Sheringham) via Wigan Athletic!

(3) Altrincham...1  Barrow...0
FA Trophy 4th Round
5th February 2005

Colin Little's sweet header at the Chequers End....right in front of the stunned Barrow hordes!

(4) Northwich Vics...1  Altrincham...1
Nationwide Conference
27th December 1999

Richard Landon produces yet another of his last minute goals to earn 10 man Alty a point at The Drill Field.

(5) Bradford Park Avenue...1  Altrincham...2
Nationwide North
9th April 2005

Alty are 1-0 down until Val Owen equalises in the 85th minute.
Then Rod Thornley nets a winner five minutes into injury time.
Onwards to the Play Off Final....and a return to the Conference.

So, any other suggestions?

Whether to travel to the MEN Arena and pay £500.00 for a ticket to see Barbra Streisand.....or walk to Moss Lane and study Bury's chocolate-coloured away kit for free.

Any suggestions?

....and I have to say that he was sporting a good suntan.

Perhaps not quite as impressively bronzed as the likes of Ronnie Ellis, Barry Whitbread, John Davison and Phil Power in their pre-season heyday....but the signs are encouraging....

Altrincham FC First Team / Gary Hulmes (for the gazelle)

mister gazelle,

Well, you are certainly correct in your statement that Gary Hulmes made his Alty debut at Worcester City.

It was the Alliance Premier League Cup Semi-Final First Leg on Monday, 9th February 1981.

However, the scorer of Alty's goal in the 1-0 victory was John Rogers.

Gary Hulmes appeared on the Alty team sheet on a total of eight occasions.....but never scored a goal for the club.

Altrincham FC First Team / Spot the contradiction.....

From the Manchester Metro News article:

Alty chairman Geoff Goodwin says of the Altrincham board, "We do it for the love. We haven't got a lot of money and until someone with a lot of money comes in, Conference National is a dream. You're living in dreamland if you think you can survive in that league on a part-time basis."

Manager Graham Heathcote agreed; "It is a difficult league for part-time clubs financially and physically but you have to aim to get out of the league you are in. We have to aim to be in the Conference National and, once in, see how far up we can progress as a part-time team."

Who at the back of the class whispered "Stafford"?
