Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Hartlepool United (A) Match Thread

How on earth did we recede from complete control during the first half to that second-half omnishambles?

We should have been 2-0 up at half-time. Angus did really well to create that opportunity but then totally fluffed his finish.

We could even have added a second goal early in the second half with that Mooney chance.

Gould then proceeded to endure a nightmarish few minutes. What on earth was he doing not coming out to collect that ball which was headed back to him?
And then you could see him conceding that penalty from a mile off.

Fortunately, their goalkeeper was as abject as ours and was at fault for both Alty's goals.

We simply imploded in the face of their pressure and our away form is looking alarmingly brittle. I don't think that I've ever seen Marriott give such a substandard performance.

Parkinson's post-match interview should be enlightening.

The highlight of the TV broadcast was seeing Hughesy's dapper cap amongst the Alty faithful.

Hoping that was a one-off and things will be much better at Hartlepool on Tuesday evening.

Are you referring to the improvement of the teams performance or Hughsy's headware?

Well, I am hoping that Hughesy will shift the headgear glamour up a notch on Tuesday evening.

I'm hoping for something a touch more exotic, such as a deerstalker, fez or sombrero.

Alternatively, he could go with a classic top hat, partnered with a silk cravat and a gleaming monocle.

Alas, that definitely rivalled the defeat at Rochdale as being our worst performance of the season, to date.

I can't identify a single component of our machine that didn't malfunction.

I don't think that anyone did themselves justice there and even Eddy Jones was uncharacteristically well off the pace. Aldershot rarely attain a clean sheet!

So many passes that went astray; standing off them far too much for both goals; an unaccustomed dearth of potency up front and substitutes who were unable to change the narrative in any shape.

I'll be interested to listen to Phil Parkinson's assessment in due course.

It was a perfect storm of disappointing results for us in the league today.

He scored a hat trick for Northwich against us in the Cheshire Senior Cup Semi Final Second Replay at Canal Street the following season.

Larry's nephew, Michael, made four appearances for Alty during the 2000/01 Unibond Premier League season.

So not so mad after all, assuming it was a Sunday. Anyone got a date for it?
Following up from this thread is there scope from an old timers or beginnings of a historical database section?

Steve,

Here you go:

For all of us Alty curmudgeons who had harboured a grudge after the great re-election fiasco of 1980, that was a long-awaited and extremely gratifying performance and result.

I thought that Rochdale started well and looked OK overall, albeit without a great deal of invention or punch up front. Gilmour in midfield always impresses me.

We defended with composure throughout and were devastatingly clinical in the second half.

I hadn't realised that when you purchased an Altrincham FC beach towel, you would actually get the opportunity to use it on a day out on the sand at the J Davidson Stadium.;D

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but no previous iteration of the pitch would have stood up to any of the games that have been postponed this season.

Respectfully, I have to disagree with your assertion.

In my 50+ years of watching Alty, I can never recall the area directly in front of the main stand being in such moribund condition (and that even includes those seasons when Trafford Borough were churning it up on a regular basis).

There is manifestly an underlying issue with the drainage in that section which will require some remedial work during the summer (hopefully, covered by a warranty).

As I posted on here back on 23rd January, I feel that a statement from the board relating to the playing surface is now long overdue.

Intriguing. Seems only Parky had the knack of handling him. He was a good lad whilst with us.

Well, almost....!

Splendid memories, but just a few observations.

Ardiles and Villa were not involved in Spurs' promotion from Division Two during the 1977/78 season, and The Falklands War took place in 1982.

The rescheduled FA Cup Third Round tie at White Hart Lane actually took place on Wednesday, 10th January 1979. That was a long but very enjoyable train journey back home to Cheshire!

In respect of our play-off prospects, my abiding misgivings remain that they could be derailed by the reduction in quality in relation to our back-up players, in the event of us incurring any injuries and suspensions.

Here are all the thrills and spills from last night's match:

No criticism of the beleagured groundstaff, as it's patently obvious that our pitch has developed major underlying drainage problems, but I've just viewed some alarming images of that troublesome area directly in front of the main stand and it resembles an outtake from 1917.

Surely, the time has now come for the board/club to issue an official statement regarding the current moribund nature of the playing surface at the JDS, if only to dispel a few theories/rumours and offer some reassurance that the problems will be addressed during the summer (and, rather importantly, under warranty, too)?

A major setback.

I would expect Gould to be well ahead of Byrne, as the latter hasn't played any competitive football for in excess of two months (and even during the closing stages of his loan spell at Cork City, Byrne was replaced by Tiernan Brooks, who is scheduled to make his debut for Rochdale on Tuesday evening).
