Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Eastleigh Match Thread

How on earth have we contrived to lose that game?!

Both their goals arose from us giving away possession on the fringe of their penalty area.

We were pedestrian for much of the first half and guilty of overelaborating around their penalty area.

However, we dominated the second half and penned them back for long periods.

Newby, Angus and Amaluzor were all underwhelming, and I still remain unconvinced by Banks.

Conn-Clarke certainly wowed the rather annoying commentators on the streaming.

Hugely frustrating.

Three home games in eight days will constitute a severe test of our pitch (and the groundstaff!).

An extremely gratifying afternoon and a statement victory over a strong Southend United side.

The sort of solid all-round team performance that a manager must dream about. In particular, Marriott and Osborne really caught the eye and a word of praise for the calm and consistently reliable Lewis Baines (another exceptional block from him during a Southend attack early in the first half).

Ross once again proved why he has been such an invaluable acquisition. The back four just seem far more confident with his presence in goal, as opposed to our manifest defensive fragility last season.

Credit is due both to Southend for their approach to the game and the officials who also contributed to the occasion.

I hope that some of the drainage issues regarding that area of the pitch directly in front of the main stand can be resolved and I trust that the scoreboard operator has recovered from their second-half nervous breakdown.

The day was topped off nicely when Bill Waterson was kind enough to bring the great Tony Sanders into the CSH after the match in order for some of us to enjoy an extended chat with him.

What a remarkable character he is. Almost 86 and as sharp as one of our Chief Executive's suits. It was an absolute pleasure to see him back at Moss Lane after all these years. Now we just need to commission a statue of him....

Altrincham FC First Team / The Main Stand windows: tunnel vision
« on: November 06, 2023, 03:59:49 PM »

Now that the colder weather is looming on the horizon, may I issue a plea for the club to do something regarding the limited visibility afforded by the main stand windows?

During our last home match against Kidderminster, the main stand windows were so murky that two corners of the pitch disappeared into an opaque fog.

Players and the ball simply became blurred figures, so much so that I began to fear that I was actually suffering with cataracts.

In fact, I actually ended up having a restricted view of the CSH, which is the very edifice which condemns me to a restricted view of the pitch on a regular basis!

As a result, I dread to think how amateurish the club looked, both in front of the new/infrequent attendees on the night who had been attracted by that £5.00 offer, and the visiting media team who were located at the rear of the main stand.

Oldham defensively were good and we couldn't quite get through them, they set up not to concede and it worked on that occasion. So you could say a traditional away cup game set up and they're through to the next round. Not great to watch but it got the job done for them. Our forwards not quite at their best yesterday as others have mentioned.

A floater near me was moaning about lack of subs but we just don't have a strong enough bench at the moment yet to make a difference unfortunately. Linney starting up top and then a fresh winger to come on in the second half would have been ideal but squad not big enough for an impact sub at the mo.

This hits the nail on the head.

Our current squad is threadbare and the bench yesterday didn't include even a single player who could realistically offer an attacking threat.

I thought that the defence performed well, but our front four attacking players all rather failed to shine. Newby and Amaluzor were largely peripheral figures, Angus fluffed his big chance (although credit goes to Hogan for his defensive block) and CCC endured a nightmare.

Unexpectedly, we found ourselves having a chat with the Oldham owner Frank Rothwell in the CSH after the game. Nice chap.

Who's bright idea was it to place the Oldham crowd around our Commentary team?

That was an inevitable consequence of the segregation arrangements employed for yesterday's game.

The only way of avoiding that would have comprised relocating the Radio Alty team at the rear of the main stand, and that was jam-packed with the various media personnel covering Oldham.

...so it appears we would have had Newport (A), as our ball number was pre-determined.

Would we have liked that?

Not a very glamorous proposition, admittedly, but I'd still prefer to be in the competition.

A long overdue lucrative FA Cup run has the potential to be transformational for this club.

Altrincham FC First Team / Alty's youngest player in a competitive match?
« on: October 11, 2023, 03:52:18 PM »

Possibly recorded in last evening's Cheshire Senior Cup tie.

In the post-match interview with acting-manager Ross Speight, he mentions that the substitutes Jack Chandler and Harrison Howells are both aged 16.

So, the question now remains: which one is the younger of the two..?

Strange game.

We were awful for some periods of the match, but could still have won it more comfortably via those two late chances for Newby and Amaluzor respectively, plus that deflected Newby free kick which was parried onto the crossbar (three decent saves by their goalkeeper).

Calamitous header by Donowa for their equaliser.

We certainly improved once Parkinson had withdrawn Angus, both defensively and as an attacking threat.

Credit to Baines, yet again, for two extremely timely defensive blocks during the first half.

In his post-match excitement at a third consecutive victory, Parkinson completely forgot about our pivotal three wins in eight days against Woking, Barnet and Solihull Moors last February!

The last three results have been both splendid and rewarding, but the squad is certainly looking ominously threadbare once again.

Dinanga was never used properly or given a chance by Management unfortunately.

Odd that we are the only place where he's not been prolific??

MarpleAlty hits the nail firmly on the head in his above response.

Dinanga made 33 (+14 as sub) appearances during his tenure at Alty, so I'm not quite sure how you can say that the management team didn't give him plenty of opportunities. If anything, they were extremely loyal to him when things just weren't working out.

He certainly wasn't even remotely prolific during his respective spells with Hartlepool, Chesterfield and Stevenage.

He didn't suit our system. He manifestly fits well with the one played at Gateshead.

Now, I wonder whether we negotiated a sell-on clause when we sold him to Gateshead...?!

Yesterday marked the first time that we have scored six goals in the top flight of Non League football since a 6-2 victory at Boston United on Wednesday, 27th February 1991.

A decent player and a useful addition in the short term but I can't help but think that a pacy winger would have been a better fit.

Alty press releases describes him as "a free-scoring winger who can also play in central midfield".

'Free-scoring' does seem a trifle generous, but let's hope that it turns out to be an inspired prophecy!

I received the following message from a Hartlepool supporter this morning:

"We've now played 27 games since our last clean sheet at Doncaster in February, and we're closing in on our club record of 31, set in the 1927/28 season when the change in the offside law led to a nationwide glut of goals."

Interesting that the match previewer for the Hartlepool game on the official club website seems to be under the misapprehension that Tom Jones made his debut at Wealdstone!

"Young prospect Tom Jones, stepping in for the injured Matty Kosylo, emerged as a particular bright spot in a match where clear-cut attacking opportunities were sparse for both sides."

I look forward to seeing what he can do on the green, green grass of home.
