Jim, brilliant memories mate, Runcorn 86 in the Trophy at Wembley, you lead a massive sing and follow chant, my Man City mate was very impressed, can you recall it?

Vaguely, I used to start a fair few songs then. I'm afraid my memory for most things is a bit selective these days

i remember a certain section of the golf road doing a similar thing with graham Tobin i think Jim in London was a founder member .

Six foot two, harder than Callan, Graham Tobins better than Allan
Six foot two, tackles he never dodges, Graham Tobins better than Rogers
Six foot two, he's no coward, Graham Tobins better than Howard
Six foot two, doesn't give a ####, Graham Tobins better than Brooke
Six foot two, hear us sing, Graham Tobins better than King
Tobin Tobin Tobin
Grass Bank skins grown our hair wooah

Ah them were the days, he actually asked us to stop doing it at one time as he was getting so much stick from the other players.

I wish I hadn't been so cool and actually kept some of this stuff!
One thing that hits me is that's a proper match report, you don't see many of them these days

Was it difficult to get away from Sheffield after the game?

Well I remember there being a load of Sheff Utd skins looking for trouble but not finding any. I remember this because I was with my brother who was stoned out of his head, he was wandering down the road singing 'Altrincham lalala' under his breath but loud enough to hear. I told him if he didn't stop I would fill him in myself.
But on a scale of 1 to Tottenham 79, not really.

I seem to remember them kicking open the gate at the Chequers end when the home game finished, is that right?
I can still see Barry Howard tearing Stewart Houston a new one, and was right behind Heathcote  screaming 'don't shoot from there' as he let fly. Great days indeed.

I suppose as Uncle Globby says we all have our favourites, and mine was and remains the Rotherham 2-0

I remember that Pete, and for lots of matches after we would shout to tell the keeper where Heathcote was going to put it!

Not forgetting Whitbread managing to get the ball over the bar from 2 yards out...

PS Gazelle I don't get your question mate, I was in the Golf Rd and yes, Orient had the section of Popular Side. We tried that a few times that season, Vics were put there too I recall.

I imagine he was in the Chequers like me despite always standing on the Golf Road normally
Was it tickets? Cannot think why we would have gone in that end unless we had to

Don't worry you don't see it
And it was the best tackle I have ever seen

Leytonstone and ilford, Green Pond Road I think
Massive it was

I went to that game but don't remember the ground being esp. big.  Any idea what the capacity was and the gate when we played them?

My memory for this stuff is awful, I simply remember it being a big old bowl of a place with virtually nobody there, and Wooly and I sat on a big lump of terracing on our own and watched the game from there.

Record attendance 21,708 for Olympic football 1948!

Yes bottles and cans shouldn't have made it in but you could buy a pint in the bar and drink it on the terrace, just like several other grounds in BSN - Oxford City, Bishops Stortford

My view for what it's worth
Brackley were bigger, stronger and more physical than us and no Alty player (bar Havern) had a good day, so really we were just beaten by the better team on the day. Refs always seem to have their own interpretation of what is an acceptable amount of contact and unfortunately yesterdays was one of the let it go variety which played right into Brackleys hands, against sides that play like that teams like ours need protection and we didn't get it which made the task in hand even more difficult, the ref didn't remotely cost us the game though.
Before the game we felt that if it was goalless after 30 minutes the odds would swing our way, then bang 3 minutes and it never got better.
Anyway my point is these things happen, I'm not happy about it but sometimes you get beaten and that's a fact. Of course I would have preferred us to go down in a better fashion but again you need some luck and we didn't even have that yesterday - at the start of he second half you could see Brackley were nervous and if we had taken one of our half chances then who knows?

For all the talk of Brackleys ground - pathetic for this level - and the money spent on the team, I left feeling a bit sorry for the town. While I went to the game my partner wandered around and after said it was a lovely quiet sleepy place where nothing much happens. I would hazard a guess that most people who live there never signed up for the visit of Halifax next week never mind Luton et al if they get promoted, and now because of the money they are operating at a level too big for the town to handle.
