far from denying it i'm extremely proud of my altyultra years.
i think i have said it before but i hadnt been to a game for a few years until stevenage away last year. it amazed me the level of support and volume and passion there was, much more so than in the premier league. it really re-ignited something in me.

at one time all the surgical supports were alty regulars
i saw john the guitarist for the first time in 20 years last year

swapping teams? hmmm not quite but over the course of 25 years in london i have become a west ham fan and have a season ticket there. does this make me a bad person?
in my defence i still make as many of the south east alty games that work will permit (i would be at cambridge if i wasnt at work) but having no family/friends etc left in alty i wouldnt be coming up for games regularly anyway

this thread has got me reminiscing again and started me thinking about the times i was most proud of the performance. leaving out all the obvious trophy wins and spurs/brum/eveton etc

first one that springs to mind was the second rotherham game.
the gazelle will tell you i ended in tears that day. i think the reason was that it was the first time i had seen us not only beat league opposition, but totally deserve it, be the better team by a mile, dominate the whole match and never look in trouble
(see also sheff utd replay)

second is the QF and SF of the trophy in 81/2
the performance at bishops stortford in the replayed QF sticks in my mind  as one of those night where we never gave them a sniff. they must have thought they had done the hard part after we only got a late equaliser at moss lane. there were very few alty there that night to see it but anyone who went to the semi at wycombe will know exactly the feeling.
alty were so great that day at wycombe and so dominant (i suppose it was a team in decline but still capable of great days) that i could concentrate solely on survival and not worry about the score

Fisher Athletic (did they ever bring even one supporter with them?)

they didnt even have any supporters at their place
the first case of a totally transplanted club?

i was at all those fa cup, trophy and alliance premier league games, but the runcorn match and the eastbourne match are the most significant. not the best games or the biggest games, but the ones which changed the destiny of the club

indeed at the 76/7 game my mate lee had a banner which read 'johnson eats fenoughtys for breakfast'
not very witty but its what passed for humour in 1976

cold someone post the winning cup run the next year?

never realised we played both matlock and winsford in both 76/77 and 77/78

the 78 crowds were much more and if there was only 2,800 in the second leg against scarboro you can use my arse as a banjo. there was about 3,000 leeds skinheads stood in the golf road armed with sharpened combs and dressed as clockwork orange or was the clockwork orange bit hartlepool

thats pretty much as i remember it
i climbed into the stand and stayed there

wasnt matlock the second time at their place and ian morris scored with a mish*t cross. there were loads of 'alty lads' there that day who were never seen before or since. the coaches got there late and we had to run through the town to make kickoff. the locals thought the barbarian hordes had arrived.

i went to weymouth on more than one occasion but dont remeberit at all. i'm getting on you know

shall we just say that heathcote has always had a 'short fuse'
25 + years ago at frickley he threatened to see me outside for daring to complain that he might of hit the target from the edge of the box
he needs to cslm down or he will have a stroke

re barrow as a player
i always felt that he was the one that turned a potentially great group into a great group
kingy was always the one that got the credit but i always felt that barrow was the man
(i know i only ever post about the past)
hopefully a good appointment and its onwards and upwards from here

if its the same al williams then yes i went to school with him. he was a very good player and proably the best in a very good school team. i think he played for cheshire and had trials with a few clubs but it didnt go anywhere. i remember him having a trial at alty and think he may have played a few reserve games. dont know if he ever taught at AGS as i havent seen him since about 1982.

the star of that AGS team of course was gareth smith the goalkeeper who did play for alty. 7 years at school with him and i scored about 5 goals!

rubbish............. kenny is a god there but there has  been times when he has sat and watched timperleycricket instead of Alty and lets not forget the bitter and twisted 'reserve team years' . the continued abuse of the management 'rubbish graham get yer subs on"
its george all the way george was a mega god in a bobble cap in the 70's and i remember being a little feint hearted in a schoolgirl crush type way when he yes he himself said 'why dont you come to hyde with us ' when i commented i didnt know how to get there.
george all the way for me and if this carries on i am going to start a slur campaign on kenny i know stuff about him that he wouldnt want ou to know!!!!

tee hee
do you remember an article in the paper about how empty the town was because everyone had gone to wembley? and to illustrate it they had pictures of 'altys biggest fan' on the empty streets.
