someone said 40 on the match thread last night
considering bolton took less than 200 to west ham for a monday night game recently i dont think thats too bad

while theres nothing wrong with remembering the past of course we have to live in the present. until someone decides that football clubs can only pay what they earn we will struggle to stay in this division. i suspect most wouldnt have it any other way.
every time i have seen the team in recent times (mainly london and s.e.)  little has been head and shoulders the best player. not necessarily the one who tried hardest but the one with the little something extra which wins you games.
if he was younger, fitter, quicker, he wouldnt be playing for us

Bless.

To be honest. I'm old enough to keep a lookout for your results and titter if you lose.

But in the last decade we've played Stockport and Rochdale far more often (Let's face it, we've played Man City more than you in the last 10 years!) so you don't even register with most of our younger supporters.

Be nice to play you in a friendly or something again though.

Always good to help out the smaller local clubs...  ;)

you care so little that you read our forum?
macc are a non-league club masquerading as a league club and you know it
we all know there are clubs in the bsp who shouldnt be, and teams in the football league who shouldnt be (hello dagenham, hello morecambe, hello macclesfield)
time will sort it out

i often wonder if the macc/vics thing is age related
to me macc dont rate very highly, maybe because when i started they were a nothing club
whereas northwich was a big game
anyone?

I suspect that the pivotal point regarding whether Macc or Vics are our main rivals was the creation of the Alliance Premier League for the 1979/80 season.

During the 1960s and for most of the 1970s, Alty v Macc was always 'the big one'.

As Macc declined during the mid to late 1970s, so the rivalry faded a little.

Macc were not good enough to qualify for the APL in 1979 and it wasn't until 1987 that they gained promotion to the GM Vauxhall Conference and played us in a league fixture again.

During those early years of the Alliance Premier League, Vics effectively emerged as our main local rivals in the absence of the Milkmen.

well there you go. i started going mid 70s when macc were no threat, and had left for london by 87 so missed the resurgence. i know a lot of my mates around the same age still think of northwich as the enemy rather than macc.

With joy?

I was close to tears at the 0-5 defeat to Rotherham in 76-7 and actually did cry at the 0-0 Scarborough game at Millmoor later that season as I knew our chance to go to Wembley had slipped away.

joy isnt quite right
i too was at the 5-0 which was devastating as a 14 year old. i think in some ways the second game was the the culmination of something. you knew we were a good side and had our moments in the cup, but that afternoon we took them to bits. i remember just thinking that this couldnt go on, that they would come into it, but it just never happened. when they got the penalty you thought 'here we go' but then stepney saved it and i just cried. out of them all its the game i think of as the defining moment. (only sheff utd comes close)
by the way thegazelle took the mick out of me for this for ages after

at the end of last season against exeter we were stood on the golf road when alty got a free kick. we had a discussion about how they were going to lift it over the wall for chalmers to run on to, because we had been trying to do that free kick since jeff johnson was in the side, and it never worked.
lo and behold it just bloody worked. oh how we laughed

The week before the Rotherham game in 1979, the team practiced corners being knocked to the edge of the box for Mal Bailey to volley into the net (or more often over the Chequers end and into the car park).  I remember thinking at the time why the hell are we doing that - until Mal Baileys screamer in a game fo two great goals (th eother being a Barry Howard shot from outside the box - and ALex Stepneys penalty save.

i cried that day, only time ever at a football match

on mature reflection you can say at least we're not like gainsboro, 6-0 at home to hartlepool
really we would have been better off drawing a non league club than a div 1 club. imagine if we had vics at home...6000 and the real prospect of serious disorder

i know what your saying but thats not always true
penalties are often given for handball when the player didnt mean to do it
i think it was a penalty but to send hmi off too was ridiculously harsh, spoiled the game too

i have just trawled the archives to find it
i have to tell you it was me wot did it and i have witnesses
it started on a daft afternoon at morecambe writing in in their bogs alty razor squad kick to kill
it was just a daft joke, i mean it spells arse (sort of)
it was supposed to be funny because we werent like that, alty were about the only club that didnt have any hoolies
on the same level as the Grass Bank Skins (grown their hair woah)

i'm surprised and delighted that all these years later people actually remember this stuff
even more delighted that anyone thought it was real

as 15/16 year olds we were slightly obsessed by this stuff. i know one fan (still goes, no names) who habitually used to phone up daft npl places like buxton or great harwood to tell them we were bringing 3 coaches of lads on saturday. i dont suppose anyone ever believed him

just amazing to think that the team shown wasnt even the best one we had in that era

i was already living in london when we played brum. we took a minibus up for the first game full of mates etc and when it was called off went to see coventry v watford as one of the lads knew someone who lived by highfield road
3 of us took the train up for the rearranged game but took along a villa fan of our acquantance (who i think enjoyed it more than us!)

its so sad that there is no decent quality footage of the night because i would like to see if we did comprehensively outplay a top division side. i remember chatting to a copper next to me and him saying it would be a travesty if we didnt get something out of it just before hopkins scored the own goal. we didnt even celebrate just laughed and laughed.
