This forum is getting really tedious with all this now. There's a time and a place. Can't you see a thread about a friendly performance and the manager's reaction shouldn't be clogged up with all this?

We have this exact conversation year after year. I normally quite enjoy it as a fun little diversion and a chance to see some reserves play. This year? We can do without.

I was talking to a St Mirren fan today who buys a season ticket every year...but never actually goes.

It is not just Alty that has great fans.

I've seen the "highlights" of St.Mirren's games on "Sportscene" over the last three years or so. I think I understand why he stays away  :D

St Mirren are my local and I watch them live maybe once a month (plus all their highlights for my job, pity me). They do have one of the most boring attritional styles of play known to man. Think Alty away at Luton 2010/11 opener every week.

Fans have been attending games at various levels recently. The North West Counties clubs have been playing in the FA Cup and League Cup games in the past couple of weeks with fans present. I'd imagine it's down to the numbers expected.

I wonder how many other European Cup winners have played at Conference level or below?

*I notice on his Wikipedia page it says that he had 17 games on loan at Altrincham. Who from? Say his previous club was Dallas Tornado.

He was on loan from Dallas Tornado! In fact, we had two goalkeepers on loan from them.

"Of the seven members of the Robins’ second string who would make their first team debuts at the Moss Rose on that evening, the most significant was undoubtedly Billy Phillips, the promising 23-year-old 6ft 1in goalkeeper with black curly hair and a moustache who had been Alex Stepney’s understudy at Dallas Tornado in the North American Soccer League (NASL).

Born in Long Island, New York on 9th August 1956, Phillips graduated with a degree in Physical Education from Adelphi University, Nassau County, NY in 1978 but then reputedly proceeded to quit his job as a teacher to play soccer with Dallas Tornado for 50 dollars a week. The NASL club had paid his expenses to travel to England with Alex Stepney in September 1979, in order that he could continue to improve his game under the tutelage of the former Manchester United goalkeeper."

Haven't Phil and Sorvs still got two years remaining on their current contracts?

That doesn't mean they can't leave.

Jack is right that we didn't tend to go for 2 year contracts in the past. I also think it's incredibly naive to suggest that players will cheerfully cancel their contracts for free if needed. I wouldn't expect them to either.

I'm not necessarily criticising the contracts we've given out. I trust the management and like all of our current squad. But I think trying to claim there are no downsides to it at all is something of an excess of optimism. It's a new approach that carries benefits and some possible risks. Let's be realistic here.

I'd be inclined to trust our consistently successful management team when it comes to squad building to be honest.

He also started in a friendly against Connah's  Quay  the week before. Possible he will be in and around their first team squad.

I kind of like it from an aesthetic sense. I'm not sure it's "Alty" but if there's a historic precedent for it, I can live with it.

John Mcaliskey's behind it all, mark my words.

As in the lad we had a few years ago?

Did he start all this off!

Either him or Fabio Bassangue, I reckon.

I know this forum's always been a bit crackers, but people offering monetary bets on death rates takes it to the next level.

Terrible news. Mark really helped me get into watching Alty. I remember him driving me and Jack Jolly to midweek games at Runcorn and Curzon Ashton in about 2010. A really warm and funny guy who was also in charge of me at one point when I worked at Cotton Traders.

Glad he got to see us promoted.

2020: Phil Parkinson

I keep thinking about this comment.
