Can someone confirm which ice hockey team will play there, how many the dome holds and if you can pay at the gate?

1) Is it Phoenix or something like that ? (raising from the flames?)
2) NO.
3) No idea on prices but can only pay on a non Altrincham FC day.


In all seriousness do you think the Ice Hockey will effect the football attendances ?

The Altrincham Ice Dome is an approximately 2,500-capacity (2,104 seats, and up to 500 standing) ice rink in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, England that is currently under construction. The Ice Dome will host the home matches of the Manchester Phoenix ice hockey club.

The Ice Dome is a prefabricated structure constructed in Finland. Assembly of the building began in August 2006. The Altrincham Ice Dome was due to open on 24th September 2006 when the Manchester Phoenix were scheduled to play host to the Sheffield Steelers in their opening home game. This date has now been put back to the 28th January 2007.

The rink has a life expectancy of 15 years, but is expected to be replaced in 5 years time by a larger permanent facility on land adjacent to the current build. The building is costing around £2.5m.

The Manchester Storm played in the top division (Elite League) but went bump many moons ago as they got carried away with initial large attendances (16,000 for their first match) and signed a load of expensive foreigners. Attendances fell sharply and it all went t1ts up. Alty Aces played in the Northern Premier League but went bump in 2003 when the rink was sold. When permission was finally granted for a new rink to replace the Alty rink, they decided to use it for the newly formed Manchester team who play in the Elite League and have been playing "home" games at Deeside and Sheffield so far this season due to delays.

Who has paid for the building?

I bet it is the council so that is 2.5m wasted as it will be ripped down!!!!

I am lead to believe that it was private money as it was part of the deal of shutting down the old Ice rink ?

I was quite looking forward to going on Sunday night for probably what would have been my one and only visit. I'm certainly not going there ever to skate. The opening date is now supposed to be 11th February, but anyone who has been past it this week will see there is still loads to do.

It's a private venture but Trafford have leased them the (former car park) land at an advantagous rate. Anyone critical of that should remember that the freehold of Moss Lane is owned by Trafford, and unless i'm mistaken, the football club doesn't pay rent.

My only interest in it is that I feel it's good for the town. For years whenever I said to people I was from Altrincham I would get the reply, "oh, we used to go ice skating there".

The Storm folded a couple of years ago and a fans group called manchester fans of ice hockey (catchy name) started up the pheonix, they currently split home games between deeside leisure center in wales and sheffield ice center.

the venture is run by a charity set up by a local ice skater from the 80's who was quite good or something like that, he felt that with no ice rink now within a decent distance alot of the talent which had been nurtured at the previous ice rink was being lost, believe it or not alot of kids who were skating at the rink had some real talent along with being scrotbag chavs(yes i know i was one of them once).

I think his name was nicky something or other but hey. Like gaz said the official matchday maximum will be 2,500 but it has the projected capacity of 2,604 but after dugouts and disabled areas are marked out it brings the safety levels into line with the 2,500 mark.

I don't believe the lease rate is too big for the location and the links to local amenities, i think it was worked out on projected income and and life span.

The current rink being built has a maximum life span of 15 yearsbut by that time would be decrepit and worse than the old rink. after something like 3 years work is to start on the permanent building next to the rink if the belief that the building warrents a longer life than 15 years.

Not a geek but i have done a bit of looking into this before now out of interest so that is where i have picked up this information from

just read above that most of the things i put down have been noted already oh well one thing not mentioned was that this was built with being a new chav hangout in mind!

I would guess its Nicky Slater who ice danced with Karen Barber at the time \of Torville & Dean. Though the local pairing were better - in many people's opinions, they got nothing like the recognition they deserved.

By the way, I believe this will be the eventual ice rink building (and the 1st indoor extreme sports centre in the country)
