Obscure Alty & Manchester City Trivia Question
« on: July 15, 2011, 10:37:50 PM »

To pass the time before the arrival of Craig Bellamy at Moss Lane...

The Republic of Ireland International, Paddy Fagan, played for City and Alty during his career.

He remains the last man to accomplish a particular feat whilst playing for Alty - and one that is almost certainly never going to be seen again.

So, what was it?

Has to be something to do with getting sent off, going for somehow getting sent off twice in the same game?

No, that's not it.

What you describe is an unlikely scenario but it could feasibly happen in the future.

However, what Mister Fagan did is unlikely to be repeated.

Bill,

Tut, tut....pre-season schoolboy howler from you there.

Fagan was not the Alty manager during the season when Alty finished next to bottom of the Cheshire League.

You clearly need to work on your short sharp sprints a la Mister Twiss before 13th August 2011.....

The answer should lie within the pages of today's issue of the Robins Review.

Clue: it relates to Paddy Fagan scoring a goal for Alty - but it's the occasion rather than the goal that is significant.

I am sure that I have heard this one before but cant remember the event. I am pretty certain that it did not have anything to do with him or his Dad being former Irish internationals,or anything to do with him being Irish.
Was he the last player to score for Alty on Christmas Day?

Robert,

You are spot on.

Paddy Fagan remains the last player to have scored a goal for Alty in a fixture played on Christmas Day: a 1-1 draw at Winsford United on 25th December 1961.

I can't envisage Alty ever again playing a game on Christmas Day.
