I'm sure if someone came along and handed 5 grand in cash to Grahame Rowley we could happily dispense with the stand naming competition and say no more about it. As it is, there exists an opportunity for a fan or local business to get their name in the programme (which is what this amounts to) and the football club to make some money at the same time. It's not like "The Golf Road End" is going to become a distant memory. The "Chequers End" has been sponsored by Carole Nash for a few years now, but everyone still calls it the Chequers End and it will continue to be so for many years to come. People who don't buy programmes or read the sponsors page on the official website will probably never notice the difference anyway.

If anyone is daft enough to believe that the clubs soul lies in the fact that one end of the stadium is named after its proximity to a road that backs on to the local municiple golf course then they are quite simply wrong. When the club was in its darkest hour with no hope of being saved it wasn't history that pulled us out of the quagmire it was cold hard cash.

Lets rename the stand after something memorable, or to the highest bidder and get on with supporting the football team.
