Apologies for the Macc connection but.....
« on: June 24, 2012, 03:14:50 PM »

....today's issue of the Non League Paper does include an interesting article on Macc's 1970 FA Trophy winning team as part of their 'Where are they now?' feature.

Alty supporters of a certain vintage will recall that some members of that particular side such as Merrick Corfield; Denis Fidler; Dave Lyon; Dave Roberts and Dick Young subsequently went on to play for the Robins between 1971 and 1974.

' ... to play for the Robins' is in the case of some of those geriatrics named something of an exaggeration, Cult!

Used to refer to them as "The Over the Hill Gang".

Dennis Fidler was one of my early heroes as a kid in my first season 71-72.

That's a very fair point, Mike!

Dave Roberts the best of the bunch, perhaps?

He went on to become player-manager of Morecambe when they won the FA Trophy in 1974 and, according to the NLP article, now resides in South Africa.

The piece also states that Denis Fidler ran a chain of fish and chip shops before emigrating to Italy a few years ago.
