That Caecilius was always going to the forum but I never saw any toga wearing bloke in Wythenshawe, he wouldn't have standed a chance.

The Gazelle will get this but not all, several of my FB WHGS friends still regard a certain Latin teacher as Julian C**t Wilde. I'm sure he'll concur  ;D

He might never have got to the forum, but Caecilius, Metella and Quintus did get  in the Doctor Who episode The Fires of Pompeii.

Funny how Latin teachers arfe so memorable. At MGS we had Herbie Moore; put the fear of God into us and ended up one of the most respected and loved of teachers.

John "Taffy" Roberts at SaleGSB was the same.

Ken "Beaky" Hodgkinson at Alty Grammar was far too nice to be a teacher really. Used to fall repeatedly for the practical jokes we played on him. But he introduced us to the brilliant humour of Stephen Leacock at the end of each term. Alas, it took a subsequent year of patient pressure from Keith Nodding (later to be Head !) to actually get me through O level Latin, thus proving the school motto "Labor Omnia Vincit". Was it useful ? Well it's certainly of help for the Times crossword  !

KETH NODDING was my stand-off half when I was scrum-half with Bowdon R.U.F.C.

I remember his bike was hoiked up the flagpole at AGS one April Fools Day. Brilliantly partial cricket umpire too.

I was never taught by HBM but I do have memories of him at Grasmere Camp. The combined efforts of John Pickup, Tony Verity, David Soulsby and Tom Jackson piloted me to a grade 6 O-level and each of them was in his own way memorable - especially Fat Jack, whose summary of my intellectual capabilities ('that cabbage') still echoes down 43 years!

Anyway, to get back to the original point of the thread, let's hope that the Mighty Robins classically educate their opponents in this season's FA Cup ties. And given the surprisingly high number of classicists on the Forum, maybe we could stun the opposing fans with a Gregorian Chant or two this season  ;)

Before we get back to the subject I need to say  - ambrose fecking hell hole tip should have been closed decades ago.  incompetent feckers ran, managed and taught when I had the miserable misfortune to attend that institution.  I don't use the word 'school' as that infers some form of education. It wasn't a school. It was a waste of many years.

Whenever I drive past I flick the Vs...

I'm not bitter though!
