I wouldn't go quite as far as that. After all, athletes are professional these days, going to these Diamond League meets and so on. But the Olympics remains the pinnacle for them, so it still works.

In boxing too it works, because the Olympics is the highest prize for amateur boxing.

But football and tennis? f**k off. Third rate crap tournaments.

I couldn't give a toss about the mens football.....complete joke.

But I absolutly love the women's football and am glad it's in the olympics.....I don't think a trainer came on the pitch during the brazil match...compare that to the men rolling around trying to get someone sent off....I think the women represent the olympic spirit a little more.....I'm really hoping they can get a medal.

Hodgson out...hope powell in!!!

Saying all that with the corporate sponsorship the olympics have lost a lot credability....mcds and coke being responsible for a lot of world obesity.....and then paying a tiny portion of their profits as a pr / advertising project so they can make some more obese people......they should hold the olympics on some school playing field...if they can find one.....

The Olympics should be held in Greece every 4 years.Your are correct about coke and macdonals,i would not touch either of em.As for footie and tennis i dont agree with the mens footie being in the games nor tennis. It is refreshing watching the womens footie though, but some daft sports are getting included now, next games its kite surfing instead of windsurfing.

I know I have form for going on about Womens Football, to the intense irritation of some.

However just compare and contrast the male and female games in the Olympics. Womens games played in good spirit, virtually no diving about as if shot or plugged in to the national grid, no attempts to get opponents sent off, no histrionic complaints to Officials whilst the men are the opposite.

It does seem though that there may have been a (very welcome in my personal view) shift in the public perception of the Women's game (apologies to those of you who think they should be at home washing, ironing, cleaning and having/looking after children)

Just to remind you all, Altrincham have a Ladies Team, maybe they're not of the standard that we've seen in the Olympics but they try to play good football (sometimes on some indifferent pitches), they're committed, put in the effort and love playing (if only the same could be said of everyone who plays)...please support the ladies if you can

It needs to be all or nothing across the board- the football is like having a 4x100m relay team, but with 1 senior athlete making up the team, which would be ridiculous. It either needs to be a worthwhile senior tournament that the world's elite look forward to, or not be held at all.

Maybe Gary Warrington or ecky could provide another subsection on the forum for the ladies team.I think its fairly simple to do, people could be kept up to date on the latest news and discuss the Doris's latest game etc like we do on here.Giving the ladies team supporters somewhere to have discussions and pass information

If people want an all amateur, commercial free Olympics then go back to 1948. The whole "amateur" rule was a joke as soon as the iron curtain went up.  As for the commercialism, its ironic that for all the tie ins and endorsements and partnerships, there are still no adverts on view by the field of play.

As you reach the Manchester end of Bridgewater Way, there is a huge unsightly advertising hoarding (it gives Trafford Council income so I suppose it's just about justified).

It currently features a picture of a raddled toothless old hag screaming her tits off. The caption reads "it's the come-on-come-on-come-on-er. We all make the Games." Yes - it's McBloodyDonald's.

Stupid sods.

Socrates in call for more to be done to promote ladies football shocker; "something simply must be done!!" said socrates yesterday to cheers of gathering doris's in alty town centre. ;D ;D ;D

as always the americans may provide an answer to increase awareness and popularity as with beach volleyball and their version of soccer;

I dont have a problem with any sports at the Olympics - at the end of the day no bugger is making it compulsory that you watch it. They televise Poker events on tv! What can be more boring than watching that sh*te.

What I do have a problem with is the likes of those Asian badminton players who so obviously attempt to throw matches in order to avoid playing better teams.  Joe public from all over the world have spent serious money travelling to London to watch that sh*t... To the Asian woman who has quit the sport because she was disqualified with the "Goodbye badminton" quote I say to her.  "Play the game in the spirit it was intended" you wont be missed.

Just seen the cover of Private Eye. Two armed cops outside the Olympic Stadium. One is saying "Just put down the can of Pepsi, and nobody will get hurt." Priceless !

The reason so many are baffled by the alcohol rule is that it technically only applies to matches sanctioned by the Football Association although it's usually extended to cover any competitive match in this country. Nowhere else in the world bans you from drinking alcohol on a football terrace and even in this country it's only football. Pints on the terrace are standard practice at Rugby League matches
