More from Liverpool vs Altrincham, January 1981
« on: September 14, 2013, 01:25:25 PM »

OK, the Cult's post on the oddly written Shankly book spurred me on up into the attic to retrieve my Alty archives (or what's left of them). I'm going to have to spend some time sifting through because my wife who does not understand the importance of such things appears to have just thrown stuff in boxes with no regard to the precious nature of the material at hand. Hence I am missing match reports from their rightful places in the corresponding programmes (yes I was that much of an anorak).

Anyway for starters, here are the front and back of the match day programme:

Here's a news clipping from one of the Nationals (can't remember which one) from the next day (other more in depth reports with pictures are missing for the moment):

Now for the embarrassing bit....me as a geeky 16 year old complete with bobbleless red and white hat, Elvis Costello bay windows and a snorkel (how much more anorak can you get) sat at the front astride a beer barrel (an omen for the future). The first is the actual picture from the back of the MEN and the second is the photo my mother (bless her) sent away to the MEN for (some of you may be able to pick others out from that one):

Far right on the second photograph (sporting an Altrincham FC bag): Brian Taylor, later the Chairman of the Alty Supporters Club.

I was trying to remember his name. Recognised the face and the 'tache. Many thanks.  Any idea if Brian is still about?

Love this stuff, just what this forum should be for.

Can't imagine how much I'd look forward to a trip to Anfield.  What a day and buildup that must have been...

I wish I hadn't been so cool and actually kept some of this stuff!
One thing that hits me is that's a proper match report, you don't see many of them these days

No squad rotation in those days. We played our strongest possible team!!
I remember that, although we were playing in white, we were singing ' Come on you Reds', possibly not the best song to sing at Anfield.
The programme mentioned that if we hadn't have been playing at Anfield that day, we would have been playing across the river at Cammell Lairds! They got it half right - the game actually would have taken place at Moss Lane, as it did during the next week and we only drew 2-2 after being 2-0 down. Then we played our reserve team(!) in the replay and lost 3-0.

I think the main reason why we played our youth team in that replay was that it took place on a midweek afternoon (2 p.m. kick-off on Tuesday 13th Jan) - Lairds had no lights at that time.

I looked at the back of the programme and saw the names 'Connaughton, Allen, Davidson, King, Johnson'  and felt a little in awe of such great names and thought fondly of my youth watching Alty when we ruled non-league footy

Then as an afterthought looked at the Scouse names....'Clemence, Neal, Kennedy (x2), Hansen, Dalglish, Lee, McDermott & Souness'.

Its kinda hard to imagine such a game now

True.  It'd be the reserves now.  Just not the same.  Went to the Liverpool game, went nuts when we scored the penalty.

Eeeee our Ada - them were't days...
