what makes Altrincham special for you?
« on: June 05, 2014, 01:57:20 PM »

Since i started watching,I've grown to  love this club. The fans; the officials, the bar, and of course the pies.
But seeing Altrincham win promotion and the pride felt by every single person at the club, got me thinking.
"what makes Altrincham special to you"?
I really would like to know your experiences (good and bad) at supporting this great club.

For me, it's the way we're all made to feel a part of the club. When I was a kid I was waiting for the coach to an away game outside the ground and I gave a Christmas card to Barry Butler to pass on to the team and management. John King asked him to come back out and get me and invited me into the dressing room to meet the players. It was only a small gesture, but it really made my day and those kind of things stay with you.

As I got a bit older I enjoyed socialising with the players in the bar and having great laughs with the likes of Jason Gallagher and Gary Scott. The bond between players and fans has been so strong here at times and that is something you just don't get in the Premier League.

I hope that future generations can gain the same enjoyment and feeling of belonging when they come here, because it's a very special place indeed and once it's in your heart you will never get rid of it.

I think that sums it up. I remember my very first away game at Vauxhall motors and walking down the side of a busy motorway and a Alty fan stopping and giving me a lift.
Meeting People Like
John & Dana Laidlar val, Isobel and stan and the other fans on the bus; especially Dan. I remember Kenny palin and Alan and Nick. Brian and Ivan, mark, and the young Alty fans have been special.
Too many to mention. Their love for Alty has rubbed off on me. I  did not get to many games last season, So would like to thank the team at Radio Robins for wonderful work.
Loved it when Brian lost his rag and started swearing. Mike at Alty TV for some special moments like the watmore goal against corby.
Best place to watch football.
Hope next season will have some special memories too.

All you folk out there, once you've been biitten by the bug you're affected for life. I first went to Moss Lane in 1948 & been there ever since. It's the people who make this a CLUB we all want to belong to.

Spot on with everything here, I think its the feeling of belonging and that your support really does make a difference, the family mentality of the club and supporters, the amazing work of the volunteers, the fantastic way the club is run from top to bottom.

Summed up for me on Promotion Day when I said to a long time Alty fan "I am so happy for you all" and he said "But I'm happy for you!". I realised then I was part of the family and it was an awesome feeling.

Made some great friends through Alty and had some great nights away from football with weddings/gigs etc as the Alty Family has grown larger. Looking forward to many more happy memories.

Coming back has reminded me of a more carefree time in my life. I like the fact that the ground looks much the same as I remember it as a teenager, that it's a small club and you get to know people's faces, that you can walk around the ground (most games anyway), that it doesn't take forever to go for a pee, or buy a pie.

I suppose, most of all, it's because it's the team I picked as a youth. There's no going back I guess.

A couple of things from when I was seriously ill a few years ago: one of our forum members sent me a home-made card and match programme when I was in hospital (I'll not embarrass him by naming him!) then when I was on the way to recovery came down to Moss Lane and Karen Rowley immediately on seeing me asked after me and gave me the warmest of welcomes - and does every time I get down south.

Also, the stewards are always very very helpful and welcoming - I used to bring a lass in a wheelchair down to ML when I lived down there - as are all the great group of volunteers.

The fans are immense - to hear them on Radio Robins is always impressive - and then there is RR and Alty TV themselves: a Godsend to us exiles.

Finally there is dear old Kenny Palin. His warm heart and great sense of fun is what the club is all about.

Strange one - I've always been an exile, left Alty when I was 5 (1977) so never actually went to a home game from home as it were.  I inherited the team I support from my Dad, I don't remember having a choice!

However it is a great club and one I am proud to support.  Over the last several years we have done things right, we paid off the debt, we live within our means, we treat our players well with trust and honesty and don't stand in their way when reality means they have a great opportunity to move on (Reeves, Boshell most recently), we are a growing part of the community.

As an exile I really started getting into Alty when the internet started and John Laidlar (may he type forever) and this forum enabled me to get a small part of the togetherness that the locals speak off so fondly, I can't imagine what it would be like to be able to be a proper part of the club, to speak to another Alty fan face to face not on a football terrace (other than my Dad).  Radio Robins and Alty TV have really enhanced the life of an exile.

I remember walking into Cheltenham's ground a couple of years ago (vs Gloucester) to be greeted by name by Brian Flynn - to this day I have no idea how he knew who I was but things like that make a difference.

My goodness, how could I not mention John Laidlar and his wonderful, informative main site and match day updates. The man has a masterful turn of phrase and is a lovely man.

Being the clubs first mascot was special , in the Freddie Pye era. I was a big fan of Noel White and Pete Swales.

Been an exile since 1969 and shout about Alty wherever I have lived and I have lived in a few different countries during that time.

Always nice to walk to the ground, especially when there are decent crowds with plenty of away visitors.
