TASC World Cup Prediction Competition - Guess What ? ...
« on: June 14, 2014, 01:10:51 AM »

... none of our entrants predicted Spain to loose by 5 goals to one !

Welcome to the first update of the TASC World Cup Prediction Competition.

With four matches now completed, we can confirm that we have 25 teams taking part in the competition to predict the correct scores and match results of the initial group stages.

Thank you to all of those who have entered.

The surprise result of the second day was undoubtedly The Netherlands 5-1 annihilation of Spain

Not surprisingly, no one correctly predicted the Dutch’s demolition of current world champions. In fact not one of all 25 entrants predicted a win for the Netherlands by any score !

In the earlier kick off, only 2 people correctly predicted a 1-0 victory for Mexico, although only 2 people failed to pick up at least 1 point.

The final match of the second day saw Chile take on Australia and win 3-1 with just two fully correct score predictions.

So after the results of the first 4 matches means that the first league table looks like this:

The Hand of God   8
Good Guessers   8
They Think It's All Over   7
Gilmore   6
One Over The Eight   6
GC XI   6
Wilmslow Wanderers   6
The Flaggers   5
We're On The First Plane Home   5
Super Doopers   5
Rio De Timperley   5
Mauritian Flyer   5
Groucho's Gooners   5
Sarah Rowley 5
Foz   5
I'll Beat George   5
Shortdean United   4
Hardly Athletic   4
Phil Jones   4
Pukka Is Best   4
Barkley's Brave Harts   4
Pete Foster   4
All Roads To Rip - BR - 116   3
Potters Mould   3
Timperley Toon   2

Saturday sees three matches with Columbia taking on Greece in the early kick off, followed by Uruguay v Costa Rica at 8.00pm and the big match last off at 11.00pm when England open their campaign against Italy.

5 people have predicted Columbia v Greece to finish as a goal less draw with only 4 going for a Greek victory.

No one gives Costa Rica a chance of beating Uruguay although 4 have gone for a draw. The biggest predicted victory margin is 6-0.

In the big match between England and Italy, 10 out of 25 have gone for a 1-1 draw with a further 6 predicting an England victory by 2-1. Only 3 entrants have gone for an Italian win.

The next update will be posted after the above mentioned matches.

Only 4 out of 25 entrants managed to pick up a solitary point.

Costa Rica’s 3 -1 victory over much fancied Uruguay brought a temporary halt to scoring in the TASC World Cup Prediction Competition with just 4 teams collecting a solitary point.

The earlier match saw Columbia beat Greece 3-0 with Potters Mould and Sara Rowley the only two teams to pick up a maximum 3 points.

England’s plucky performance but ultimate 1-2 defeat was correctly predicted by Timperley Toon and Mauritian Flyer to pick their only points of the day.

The biggest mover was Sarah Rowley who picked up 5 points on the day to move into joint second place.

After 7 matches the table now looks like this:

Good Guessers   11
The Hand of God   10
Sarah Rowley 10
They Think It's All Over   9
Gilmore   9
Mauritian Flyer   8
One Over The Eight   7
GC XI   7
The Flaggers   7
We're On The First Plane Home   7
Super Doopers   7
Rio De Timperley   7
Groucho's Gooners   7
Foz   7
I'll Beat George   7
Shortdean United   7
Pukka Is Best   7
Potters Mould   7
Wilmslow Wanderers   6
Pete Foster   6
All Roads To Rio - BR - 116   6
Hardly Athletic   5
Phil Jones   5
Barkley's Brave Harts   5
Timperley Toon   5

Sunday’s matches kick off at 2.00am with Ivory Coast taking on Japan.

I for one will not be bothering staying up to watch the action.

Later in the day Switzerland take on Ecuador and France play Honduras in Group E, with the final fixture seeing second favourites Argentina open their campaign against Bosnia- Herzegovina.

11 out of 25 expect Ivory Coast v Japan to end in either a 1-1 or 2-2 draw.  7 expect an Ivory Coast win and 5 a victory for the Japanese.

In the Switzerland v Ecuador match 6 people have predicted a Swiss win, 9 a draw and the most popular prediction being 6 going for a 1-0 win for Ecuador.

According to our pundits, France are racing certainties to beat Honduras with just 3 people plumping for a draw. The most favoured score is 2-0 (8 predictions) closely followed by 6 predictions for 3-0. The most optimistic prediction is an 8-2 score line !

If that happens I will personally offer a bottle of champagne to the person who predicted such a score line !

In the final game of the day, Argentina are even bigger favourites than France to beat Bosnia Herzegovina with just one person predicting a 1-1 draw. 12 out of our 25 people are predicting Argentina to score 3 goals, with three expecting Messi and Co to score 4, and two going for 5 goals.

Can Honduras and Bosnia Herzegovina do a Costa Rica and beat the big boys ?
Only time will tell ?
