Algeria’s early penalty against Belgium scuppered the chances of no less than 21 of our teams picking up a maximum 3 points by predicting the correct 2-1 score line in favour of the Belgians.

With no one picking up a maximum 3 points, 10 people who predicted a 2-0 Belgian win were able to pick up 2 points, and only one team (All Roads to Rio) failing to pick up a point  in the first match of the day.

Mexican goalkeeper Ochoa’s heroics in keeping a clean sheet against Brazil meant that for the second game running, no one managed to pick up 3 points by correctly predicting the 0-0 score line. 22 out of 25 had gone for a Brazilian win and only 3 had gone for a 1-1 draw.

However things changed dramatically in the final match between Russia and South Korea with no less than 9 people correctly predicted a 1-1 draw between the last two teams to complete the first round of qualifying matches.

Special mention  to The Flaggers, Barkley’s Brave Harts and Pete Foster for breaking their ducks and coming up with their first fully correct score prediction.

Congratulations to Pete Foster in particular who predicted that all 48 matches would end up 1-1 !  By the law of averages the first 1-1 score line finally came up after 17 matches. The result moves Pete up to 20th place but does ask questions as to those teams below Pete who presumably gave some serious consideration to their selections ?

That leaves just three teams who have yet to successfully predict a maximum 3 pointer.

As a result the top of the table has all of a sudden become very close indeed with just 1 point separating the top five teams. Gilmore and Sarah Rowley are top, level on 24 points and both have correctly predicted 3 correct scores.

The full table reads:

1   Gilmore   24
2   Sarah Rowley   24
3   The Hand of God   23
4   Rio De Timperley   23
5   Groucho's Gooners   23
6   Potters Mould   21
7   Good Guessers   21
8   Mauritian Flyer   20
9   The Flaggers   20
10   Pukka Is Best   19
11   Phil Jones   19
12   Foz   19
13   Shortdean United   18
14   One Over The Eight   18
15   I'll Beat George   18
16   GC XI   18
17   Barkley's Brave Harts   18
18   Timperley Toon   17
19   Wilmslow Wanderers   16
20   Pete Foster   16
21   All Roads To Rio - BR - 116   15
22   They Think It's All Over   15
23   Hardly Athletic   15
24   We're On The First Plane Home   15
25   Super Doopers   14

The first match of Day 7 sees Australia take on the impressive Dutch team who will be seeking to build on their impressive 5-1 demolition of Spain in their opening fixture. Not surprisingly 24 out of 25 have predicted a win for the Netherlands with 6 each going for either a 2-0 or 3-0 winning margin. Guess who has gone for 1-1 ?

In the same group Spain will be looking to bounce back against Chile and 23 people have gone for a Spanish win with the most popular prediction being a 2-0 win (8 predictions)

The late kick off is between Cameroon and Croatia in Group A.  It’s a case of loser goes home after Mexico’s draw with Brazil. Both teams lost their opening fixtures to Mexico and Brazil respectively and will be looking for a victory to keep their slim hopes of making the knock out stages alive and avoid the ignominy of being on the first plane home.

Only one of our entrants predicts a win for Cameroon (by 2-0) with 15 going for a Croatian win (8 going for 2-1) and a further 9 predicting a draw (1-1 being favourite with 6 forecasts)

Spain's elimination has blown a few chances of getting a full house in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place predictions.

We had 2 predictions for them to win,
3 predictions to be beaten finalists,
10 had gone for them to finish 3rd, and
8 had them down to finish 4th.

and that includes me also !

By my reckoning that leaves only 2 who didn't tip them.

The only two are George Heslop's 'Souper Doopers', and Phil Jones (Mind you he's gone for England to finish 4th !)
