Was just wondering what everyone considers to be their top 3 rivals.

General feeling at Altrincham seems to be

1. Macclesfield
2. Northwich
3. FCUM (a long way behind the top 2)

Had this discussion before but always nice to revisit.

As well as FCUM you have to consider Stalybridge, Droylesden, Runcorn, County, Witton, Barrow plus others.

For me it was always Vics (All of them), Macc and then Runcorn.

It's more like Macc, County and Stalybridge now.

Traditionally Macc, Vics, Runcorn.

Vics and Runcorn are off the radar now.  No idea why FCUM would be on there given we have hardly ever played them. Same for County and Chester.

              top 3 rivalries

               Macc
              Northwhich
the third one is a toss up between Runcorn and Wigan, they were probably bigger rivals in the latter days of the Cheshire lge and beginning of the NPL. Some of the crowds for Alty/ Wigan matches were huge 6,000 plus wasn't un common and i for one was really made up to beat them 1-0 in the FA Cup and set up the Spurs tie (2ND ONE ). After all that i would say Wigan for the reasons mentioned

Wigan can't be counted anymore, as if they give one about us

It's like how Aldershot still think they're relevant to Reading, it's funny really .

We've had a long term low level rivalry with Stalybridge for years in my opinion.  County - very close, and at or about level so I think there is a growing rivalry with them.  It lacks history but it's there and may well develop in the same way that Vics and Runcorn withered.

Droylesden - played them to often in recent years for my liking with some antagonism.  Deliberately prepared crap pitch with grass to the ankle and comments from Pace about "glad we're playing them again as I do like to meet our friends from Alty" - with tongue firmly in cheek as we were relegated.

For me rivalries are long standing and essentially mutual affairs that matter like hell. Like Macc and Vics as they were, possibly Runcorn, possibly Wigan in the NPL days. There is another category in teams you hate for whatever reason, FGR, I hated Scarborough for a while after the late 70s Trophy semi, I've never been keen on Boston and I have a completely unfounded but genuine dislike of Crystal Palace, but none of those could be considered rivalries. I don't regard Southport, Witton, Stalybridge, Stockport, Chester or Hyde as rivals but possibly Barrow, we go back a long way and have had some ding-dongs.

Take Dave Pace out of the equation and Droylsden would be another Mossley, Hyde or Ashton who we have no real feeling for.  The antagonism was never the club but Pace.  The only way we will develop a rivalry with County (or Chester) is if we play them more but yes the future rivalry potential is there.  It isn't really one right now though.

Stalybridge to a degree because they are local and we have played them quite a lot, but they have their own rivals really.  I would sort of say Barrow for the similar reasons, even Southport perhaps if pushed.  But that's creating rivals for the sake of it.

Not in the same class as Vics, Runcorn or Macc
