For those who began watching Alty in the 1960s or 1970s, the big derby was always against Macc (usually involving playing them on Boxing Day and New Year's Day).

Owing to Macc's failure to qualify for the Alliance Premier League for the 1979/80 season, the green slime of Vics emerged to become our bête noire (notably assisted by the heinous Jeff Forshaw).

Macc didn't attain promotion into the then GM Vauxhall Conference until the 1987/88 season.

As regards teams from afar who you loathe, well, any Alty supporter who watched the Robins during the 1970s would surely add Boston United to that particular list of infamy.

Can't argue with any of that.

Of course there was once a brief period where there were six teams from Cheshire in the top tier of Non League football:
Alty, Macc, Vics, Runcorn, Witton and Staly

That will never happen again.

Greta days those.  So many top flight teams in the area, I suppose your're right in that it'll never happen again.

This thread seems to have become any club we have a gripe against - which is many as we have a chip on our shoulder

Thing is our only real rivals are Macc and Northwich, maybe in years gone by Runcorn and Wigan

Barrow etc whilst can be fruity not really a rivalry

As for those suggesting County and FCUM or Droylsden or Tamworth, Jesus wept do you know the definition of rivalry?

Macc and Vics in no particular order, though for purely personal reasons, Southport is right up there as a rival too.

The only two rivals are the milkmen and the pricks forget the rest.

Historically there were 4 rivals:-
Wigan
Macc
Runcorn
Vics

Vics were in our league for many, many years until I think we got relegated in 1997.
Wigan got our place in the Football League in 1978, a year before Macc came bottom of the NPL and we didnt play them for a while.
Runcorn we branded as Scousers.

It's an odd thread you don't really have as many as 3 main rivals you have 1 at a push 2 the third team has been a token gesture

Since the formation of the APL/Conference we have only had one or two of these teams in our league at the same time. Now only Macc still exist in our league, Wigan progressed having taken advantage of the opportunity we should have had, and the other two are dead.
The 5 rivals together was as a result of being in a regional league.

not really true Runcorn and Vics have been in the same league as us until not that long ago - same with Macc bar last 17 years

All three clubs have played most of their history in the same regional leagues - hence why they are rivals and County of FCUM aren't - or have I missed something?

Kettering Town - massive ideas above their station, seem to think that because the town turns out when they're lop of the league they're sleeping giants.

Not exactly sleeping giants but the fact that the whole town turns up when they are doing well suggests they have the potential to become giants if they ever make it to the big time. A better reason to hate them is the little known fact that they are responsible for every team now having an advert plastered across their chest. Derek Dougan fully deserved that slap he got at the Den back in the good old days.
It's was Kettering tyres I think
Kettering Tyres is owned by an Altrincham family - I went to school with the co-owner

Or rather Kettering Motorist Centre

A family member is a regular at Moss Lane when he visits from Hereford and well known to many Alty fans  :)
