If I remember correctly, Lee Sinnott once explained that the reason Watmore missed games was due to advice from the physio that Duncan was suffering growing pains and was concerned that playing him through the pain barrier could do him serious harm. The situation he is in now at Sunderland is completely different.

Sunderland have nothing to lose putting him on the bench at the very least. His running, with his low centre of gravity, balance and pace will torment the best defenders.

I can only assume he was medically ok to play throughout that later period but, of course, only they would know for sure.
