TRANSFER NEWS: Neil Young is celebrating a double transfer breakthrough for Altrincham after beating a host of rival clubs to the signature of Fylde skipper Tom Hannigan and also landing tough-tackling midfielder David Lynch from Clitheroe.
New Alty boss Young pounced for Hannigan as soon as he heard Fylde’s decision to go full-time was at odds with the 27-year old centre-back’s work commitments.
He wasn’t alone in offering Hannigan a fresh start but was able to announce a major coup for his rebuilding programme at The J.Davidson Stadium after the highly-rated defender accepted the offer of a two-year deal to become the cornerstone of a new-look backline.
Reflecting on a hectic spell of transfer talks that ended with Hannigan and former Burnley, Workington and Clitheroe midfielder Lynch bolstering a reshaped, rapidly-expanding Alty squad, Young said:
‘David is a hard-working, tenacious midfielder who had an excellent season last season at Clitheroe. At 22, he fits the profile of what we are looking to do, and he is very keen to come in and do well.
‘Tom is a significant signing for us and is the type of experienced player we have been looking for to help the younger lads we have recruited and will continue to recruit.
‘Tom has captained AFC Fylde at this level for the last three years and only recently missed out on promotion. I know (Fylde manager) Dave Challinor was very keen to keep him, but due to a change in their status to full-time, combined with Tom’s work commitments, the chance arose to sign him.
‘I’m very happy that Tom has chosen us ahead of a number of other clubs to play his football for the next two seasons.’
Hannigan joined Fylde from Vauxhall Motors, where he not only skippered the side but was shortlisted for non-League player of the year at the North-West Football Awards in 2013.

I for one am furious, signing a promising player and a very very good defender puts all plans of saying that Young doesn't know what he's doing to ruin.  How are we supposed to go about hating and belittling a manager when he keeps pulling rabbits like this out of the hat?

Getting Tom Hannigan is a major coup indeed, for 2 years as well. David sounds promising too.
That lays the Scott issue to bed straight away although it sounds like the timing of Fylde's announcement of going fulltime was fortunate for us, seems having a local manager might be an advantage then

Tom Hannigan is a huge coup - one of the best centre halves in the league. Just need someone alongside him now!

Never seen him play but he'll be the best Alty player called Lynch I'll have ever seen...

Aside from that, he may make the step up or may not but IMO we haven't signed enough young players from lower leagues in recent years, should've done a lot more of it (Williams only one I can think of, Redshaw too but he was a slightly different case).

Now this is what I have been talking about - how do we compete with full time clubs?  By being THE BEST part time club in the North West - or even broader
Get back up to the National, and go hunting across the Conf North and below.  And exploit a Fylde going full time in exactly this way

As Ballers says, we don't have much of record recently for trying younger players from clubs lower down the pyramid.........at best they will give it their all in what could be chance to play at a higher level or even try and step-up into the full time, at worst they can be 'moved-on' and hopefully have not cost the club a lot in wages. The arguement has always been that nobody is good enough at Trafford, (previously Salford), Radcliffe etc and that could be true

We took a goalkeeper from Trafford in the 90's - and he turned out to be good enough

Great news, looking forward to next season already.
This shows that being part time can be an advantage. If we were full time we would be right at the bottom of the list for full time players, as it is we are at the top of the list for part timers.
