Non-League away supporters banned
« on: December 05, 2017, 09:53:55 AM »

No direct connection to Altrincham, but Clapton, whose supporters were banned from an Essex Senior League match a couple of weeks ago, have now been banned from a London Senior Cup match at Metropolitan Police tomorrow.
Some of the background, and our London correspondents may know more, is that Clapton, in a league where 100 is a good crowd, have attracted a lot of younger ultras who are noisy and use, or, they say, used to use flares, as well as being quite political. They also seem to be in constant dispute with the club ownership and are boycotting home games, hence other clubs check with Clapton who agree they should be banned.
This could be the thin end of the wedge.

Funny enough they are playing Southend Manor this Saturday, just down the road from me. Might pop along and see how many turn up, would expect a few, although they won’t like the £10 admission fee,; probably jump over the fence to get in.

By no means and quite the contrary! The clue was in my final sentence.
Those who boycott home games are then portrayed by the authorities of their parent club as troublemakers, and end up being banned when other clubs "have a word."

If you google Vince McBean (Clapton’s Chief Executive and owner of the ground) you will see he is one of the dodgiest figures in London non league football today, think like the Turkish gangsters who used to run Fisher Athletic when we played them back in the day. The fans are fighting a long running battle against him to regain control of the club and secure its future and its Old Spotted Dog ground. He essentially sees the ground as his pension fund. Sure the notorious Clapton Ultras have far left politics that many on here would disagree with but their passion, noise and community spirit is widely appreciated and their travelling support welcomed in the Essex Senior League and by the Clapton’s players (same level as NW Counties league).

The issue with the London Senior Cup tie is a bizarre one as the Met struggle to get 150 at their Imber Court ground and none of their players are even cops anymore anyway so banning the away fans is bizarre in the extreme. Seems like their committe is running scared and McBean has effectively persuaded them to ban his own fans on some spurious grounds of possible disorder.

The Met may also have been seeking an excuse to maximise home advantage. Anyway, the result was Metropolitan Police 3 Clapton 1  before an attendance of 28, so the ban was certainly observed or enforced.
