Alty and music
« on: January 22, 2018, 10:31:50 PM »

Taking a lead from the earlier thread about Bembo-Leta and the Gypsy Kings.....

What tune makes you think of Alty and why.

A special mention of The Road to Amarillo and the trip to Stoke City in the playoff final but the song gets on my wick.

Number one for me is Eloise by The Damned - it just seemed to be played every home game for a couple of seasons.

Maybe someone who was close to the decks could fill in the gaps, did we have a limited record squad in those days?

In the mid 70s the team used to come out to a version of the Match of the day theme - and the record skipped! I heard it so many times I half expect to hear the said skip whenever the programme starts even now.

Does anyone remember Alty's pre match DJ Neil Davies?

The one that always reminds me, we had a sort of short lived tradition of playing Bowie’s Heroes before big cup games. It came crashing to a halt when we went to the Sylvan specifically to play it on their jukebox before we played Burnley. Still when I hear it I think of cup upsets.
Perhaps I should start again?

Being relatively young during the late 90s and early 2000s, whenever I hear Tubthumping by Chumbawumba, I always think of Alty.

I have been rightly ousted elsewhere for failing to mention that whenever I hear Daddy Cool by Boney M I cannot stop myself breaking out in to singing:

Cavell, Cavell Coo, Cavell, Cavell Coo!

Don't go to the Sylvan next time you are up. You'll be disappointed.

Last couple of seasons (before PP) , Highway to Hell was the only suitable song :)

Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out

It was our official song before the play-off final at Stoke, I believe, chosen by Raffo.

I'm gonna go all Christian on yer ass (no not Terry)....Give me oil in my lamp

For once this is not a euphemism and we ain't referring to dipping your wick, although the original hymn is based upon the parable of the ten virgins...

The Byrds did a version https://youtu.be/KIIccnQY9pA

Give me joy in my heart, keep me Alty,
Give me joy in my heart, I pray,
Give me joy in my heart, keep me Alty,
Keep me Alty till my dying day
No Surrender, No Surrender, No Surrender to the Macc Town Scum....

Of course in reality for most it surely has to be the intro to ELP's Fanfare For the Common Man

I remember that, it's this one isn't it? As you say not the one used on the programme itself, enjoy in it's full unskippyness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_OKd0Uo3yw
Being a ballboy and programme seller in the early and mid 70s I used to turn up about an hour before kick off and in that period the tannoy moved from playing military band music to one of those K-Tel hit compendiums (forerunners of the NOW collections pop kids). I say one, because it was one. It was a mixed bag but at least we didn't suffer the ignominy of our team trotting out to Little Jimmy Osmond's sole hit as South Liverpool had to. No wonder Holly Park was constantly vandalised.
