Some marvellous old footage of Altrincham there. I wonder whatever happened to the 'Cosy Milk Bar'?

From the club website in March 2008:

"One of Altrincham's most famous sons is Bill Speakman, who was born in Moss Lane and won the VC for gallantry in the 1950s. Grahame Rowley writes that Bill "used to live where the new Tesco superstore in Altrincham is now. He was awarded the Victoria Cross in the Korean War and was one of only two people to receive this award during that War. He lives in South Africa but has relatives in Paignton (Devon) and was over here visiting them when our match against Torquay United was played last week. He was invited to Plainmoor as a guest of Altrincham FC and had a wonderful evening at the game". Bill is pictured (centre), flanked by Alty directors, Andrew Shaw (left) and Derek Wilshaw (right)."

Condolences to his family. RIP sir. Two tenuous links for me, as an ex Welly Rd pupil I remember the small plaque in the school hall commemorating the award of the VC.  Secondly my D-I-L is from S. Korea, hence my grandson is half Korean.
