Whitley Bay : match thread
« on: September 16, 2018, 02:00:11 PM »

Knocked out of the Vase yesterday by Whickham who are bottom of the same league with 1 point from 7 games. Led 1-0 at HT, but lost 2-1 AET.

We really should take them to the cleaners.

Alty 4 (Hulme 2, Johnston, Hancock)
Whitley Bay 0

Attendance 715 (remember absent season ticket holders don't count !) - Bay's average home gate is currently 283, so it'll be good going if they bring 50.

There's a preview (from the Whitley Bay perspective) on page 5 of today's Non-League Paper, mainly an interview with their leading goalscorer Jack Foalle.

Hoping for a decent cup run to help the coffers this season

Whitley Bay shouldn't be considered a banana skin fixture.

I'm expecting a thoroughly professional job, Hulme will be desperate to play

Alty 5-0 Whitley Bay.
Hulme hatrick.
813 attendance of which I will be one

I can see signs of complacency starting to creep in, as I warned on another thread! We should win, but I am pretty sure it won't be by 4 or 5 goals.  I can't remember us ever beating a Northern League team by a margin like that.

When I visited Whitley Bay (when Phil Parkinson's Nantwich did put 5 past them, I should add, to be fair), they felt like a much bigger club than many of those we met last season. There were over 700 for that match, and they have already sold out the supporters' coach for the game at Moss Lane. With others coming by car and train, I will be surprised if they are not in three figures.  The Seahorses -I do like that nickname - will be up for the challenge in a big match, especially as they are out of the Vase.

So, Altrincham 2 Whitley Bay 1 att. 860.

Two seasons ago, we beat Morpeth 3-0 with a team nowhere near the level of the current squad. Jordan Hulme will be keen as mustard to get back on the pitch. My estimate of 4-0 isn't unreasonable. If we don't win by at least two I'll buy you a pint next time I see you in the pub.

Massive the fa cup.

Assuming only Harrison and Densmore unavailable and Poole and Hampson aren't ready for a start.

How is the pitch standing up to all this rain?

New drainage coping? Have the pitch covers been deployed?

Need to get this game played if possible.

As I understand it, the ground staff are not yet able to use the new covers (training, health and safety etc.).

I'm not sure how much remedial action to the drainage has actually taken place.

For what it's worth, it looks like the worst of the rain has passed through here now - though that doesn't necessarily mean a dry afternoon! I hope the drainage will prove sufficient at Moss Lane; I presume any decision would have to be made pretty early tomorrow - please God that won't be necessary.

Twitter:

We haven’t been able to use the covers as the pitch was re-seeded on Monday.

We’ve had the pitch slit and the water is draining away well.

All is good for tomorrow as we stand (plus the forecast will improve) - any further updates, if necessary, will be posted straight out.

Looking good to go barring anything daft.

The pitch will need intensive work for the match to go ahead. On the main stand side the pitch has standing water from the halfway line to the goal line at the Chequers end along the touchline.  The worst areas from last year don't look too bad

pitch much better than i was expecting. why don't people go to FA cup games? it can't be just about season tickets. i've got a season ticket and i went. why is whitley bay in the cup a less exciting prospect than leamington spa in the league?

some nice play by altrincham let down some poor finishing. could have scored ten. poor old whitley bay were knackered. if the six hadn't been sent off he would have been subbed at half time. at least they tried to play proper football when they got the ball. good clean game overall, although why max harrop feels he needs to go diving in when already 4-0 up goodness only knows. tom peers certainly made up for his blyth miss with that lovely flick with the outside of his right foot over the keeper.

Into the draw on Monday  :)

Should have been double figures. Well done Tom Peers when came on. Looked hungry and unlucky not to get a hatrick
