Playoffs mini league
« on: April 24, 2019, 10:12:30 AM »

I've done a quick analysis of the results between the seven clubs in the playoff picture. Note that Chorley v Bradford is to be played on Saturday.

Bradford.       11 6 2 3 14 11 20
Brackley.        12 5 2 5 21 16 17
Alty.                12 4 4 4 23 24 16
Telford.          12 4 4 4 15 18 16
Blyth.              12 3 6 3 18 18 15
Spennymoor 12 4 3 5  19 22 15
Chorley.          11 3 3 5 18 19 12

It could of course be a case of lies, damned lies, and statistics, but a couple of interesting points are apparent. Since we look likely to be at home to Blyth, we should remember that they haven't lost away to ANY of the teams in this group !

Chorley, on the other hand, have only beaten ourselves and Brackley at Victory Park, and face Bradford on Saturday, who have the best defensive record in the group - they shipped 3 at Brackley, and at home to us, so only 5 in 9 otherwise. Not quite the form book home win it would appear.

Brackley have only won away at Blyth, and very fortunately at Moss Lane, so they'll be relieved that they'll be at home until possibly the final. They're a different prospect at home - we're the only one of the group to have won there.

Still twists and turns in prospect then.

Form goes out the window for play-off games. There is not much to choose between the play off contenders. So anything can happen.

They really should be beating teams like us

Correct all one of games that will be played at high tempo from the off.

We need to go at our opposition with our wingers and fullbacks attacking. When we play with our fullbacks getting up the field teams struggle to defend against us, apart from Stockport.

A few years back Fylde just missed out in promotion to Barrow on the last day. They promptly lost over 2 legs to Guiseley who finished 15 points behind Fylde. Tom Hannigan said they had nothing left to give. The team with energy and desire will prevail. Chorley may find it hard to go again.

One other interesting stat I gleaned from playing around with the options on flashscore.com Altrincham are top of National League North when only away games are taken into account.

Blyth seem to like playing a similar game to us going forward. I was a bit surprised when Phil said they came to stop us playing. I though they really went for it.

Alty won the play offs 5 years ago with Jake Moult, Shaun Densmore and Simon Richman in the side.

Wouldn’t agree that “form goes out the window for play off games”, I’d say carrying momentum into the playoffs can be more important that where you end up finishing.

But don’t too read much into a mini-league either. Things change so quickly at this level that whether Bradford beat Blyth back in September or not will have little relevance to the next few weeks.
