York City - Match Thread
« on: July 29, 2019, 10:14:59 AM »

Surely the game has to be in doubt at this stage?

Do the historians amongst us know whether an opening-day postponement has happened before?

I appreciate the issue in the main is drainage, but considering the forecasts would it be an idea to get the surface water off the problem area as soon as possible. Possibly hiring/borrowing some super soppers from lccc and the getting the area covered for the rest of the week? Pulling the covers back if we get any sun. Also if help is needed please keep communicating and don’t just ask for help at 2pm on Friday.

I have no recollection of an opening fixture of the season having been postponed in the years since I started watching Alty during the 1971/72 campaign.

However, I do recall the postponement of a Nationwide Conference North League home game against Barrow (which had been our scheduled fourth fixture of the season) back on Tuesday, 24th August 2004 owing to a waterlogged pitch engendered by some early-afternoon torrential rainfall.

I thought it was postponed because Barrow would have had difficulty travelling due to torrential rain closing the M6

If the covers aren't on we're in deep doo-doo. It's like the Niagara Falls out there, and the bloke opposite has started building an ark.

You'd like to think they were used to protect against the heaviest of the rain.

The rain overnight and this morning was truly biblical, I live less than a 100m from the ground, the local park is flooded as I have never ever seen before, the brook now a river behind the ground is overflowing.

I know we have partial pitch covers, ( i chipped in towards them), but where does the water run of these? Straight onto the grass and surroundings. The water table is I guess 3 foot higher than normal so do they make a difference unless you have dedicated pitch drainage that doesn't drain into the local ditch, that feeds into a brook that looks tidal at present.

There is no easy solution to this issue at the ground without significant investment, that I guess would cost in excess of £500k

I pray the rain eases to allow the pitch to drain as the brook level drops away. So we can get the game on.

When this subject arose last year, weren't we told they were frost covers, not rain covers?

No word from the club on what is/isn't being done to make sure the game goes ahead?

I'm sure like everyone else they are waiting for the rain to stop. I think we can all expect the Gold Road corner to be very soft with big puddles under the fence. So can someone at the club hire a pump to get rid of that water so the water still on and in the pitch has somewhere to go?
