Deepest condolences to all Martin's family. From everyone at Dane Road central. Martin was our number 1. He played a major part in our most successful season as a football club, and we will never forget you. Big man with a big character. Such a sad day.

My son passed away peacefully this morning after a short but fruitless battle with the aggressive cancer that he battled so bravely in recent months. I'll put details of his funeral on here when we have them.

So sorry for your loss, Phil. Terribly sad.

It was always a pleasure to share a couple of pints with Martin before or after the game, great conversation. RIP.

Condolences to you and your family Phil, I was shocked when I heard this yesterday Martin was a larger than and very vocal and no end of time when I was Safety officer had to calm him but on the other hand he would be first to offer any help if any trouble we both had mutual respect for each other.
RIP mate

Belated condolences to Phil and all the other members of Martin's family in respect of this extremely sad news.

In addition, my thoughts are with Hughesy, Ballers, Ecky et al. who will all have shared so many happy (and even some unhappy!) memories of many years spent following Alty all over the country.

I hope that everything goes as well as can be expected tomorrow and I trust that you will all give him a rousing send-off at the post-funeral gathering. I still find it difficult to believe that I will never again encounter Martin at an Alty fixture.

Anyhow, a lengthy trawl through my Alty programmes archive duly unearthed the following appearance by Martin in the first 'Superfans' feature, which appeared in the Robins Review issued for the visit to Moss Lane of Boston United for a GM Vauxhall Conference fixture staged on Saturday, 19th September 1992:

Thanks for unearthing this Barry. I remember Martin and I having a lively debate on his choice of Paul Showler ahead of Barry Howard. In retrospect he was probably right !

My heartfelt thanks to all of you who came on Tuesday, many of you from far away. Special thanks to Ecky who, despite his own problems, gave Martin a fine eulogy.

Shortly beforehand, Pete Foster gave me a condolence card, signed by the players, and with over £100 enclosed. I donated it to the hospice. If anybody is in any doubt what makes our club truly special, this said it all for me.
