Ryan Colclough released by SC**thorpe United after investigation into assault charge

Colclough was suspended by the Iron after being charged with assaulting a police officer following an incident at a Taco Bell drive-through

SC**thorpe United have confirmed that Ryan Colclough has left the club following an investigation into an assault charge.

The 25-year-old was suspended by the club after being charged with assaulting a police officer following an incident at a Taco Bell drive-through in June.

South Yorkshire Police attended the scene at Herten Triangle retail park in Doncaster “following reports of a man acting drunk and disorderly in a public place”.

A statement from the constabulary said an officer was assaulted and sustained injuries to his face during an arrest attempt.

Despite information of the charge being released on September 28, Colclough was named the Iron’s captain for the EFL Trophy clash with Manchester City U21s a day later, with the club not finding out about the incident until the following week.

The club have now officially confirmed that Colclough has left the club by mutual consent, with no further comment being made.

“It seemed impossible with today’s social media, and every aspect of that, that we didn’t pick that up,” SC**thorpe chairman Peter Swann told BBC Radio Humberside last week.

“As soon as we found out, we acted. We are disappointed we’re in this position, but the club will act professionally and deal with the situation forthwith.

“I would be disappointed with anyone that wasn’t honest with the club about their situation, because it’s not just about giving us the information.

“The first thing we would say is ‘how can we help the individual? Is there anything we can do?’ and we weren’t able to do that. That is disappointing.

“Our first priority is to look after the player, but if it’s detrimental to the club, the club comes first.”

Born in Burslem, Stoke, Colclough began his professional career with Crewe Alexandra before signing for Wigan Athletic in 2016.

The winger hit the headlines for more positive reasons while playing for Wigan in 2017 as he netted twice against Doncaster Rovers before being substituted to allow him to rush to the hospital to witness the birth of his second child.

Colclough signed for the Iron for an undisclosed fee in 2018 and made 37 appearances with injuries playing a big part during his time at the club.

He will appear before Doncaster Magistrates’ Court on November 24.
